It's pretty clear that the PCE was intended (by Hudson) to be the successor to the Famicom's crown. The hardware is more advanced, yet surprisingly familiar. With that in mind. What NES/Famicom games really needed a PCE sequel? I'll offer up one to get us started.

Yami no Shigotonin KAGE/Shadow of the Ninja/Blue Shadow - Awesome music and sound FX, even if the game is a little short. Would love to see what Natsume would do with the enhanced color, sprite, and sound capabilities of the PCE.

Yup, PCE got a good chunk of the Dragon Slayer games...

Though, Faxanadu should never be ported anywhere without changing the name...

Faxanadu = Famicom Xanadu

so we'd have to call it Pcexanadu, or Turxanandu or something... lol

I'm glad we got Sorcerian (My second favorite), and wish we got Drasle Family (my first favorite).

LotW/Drasle Family is one of the greatgest games on the NES, and its also responsible for making countless chumps whine like the chumps they are.

Ahh, ok.  I can understand that, especially since that is my favorite Dragon Slayer game and wish there were other ones like it.  I've thought of ideas a few times for making a sequel or similar game but never acted on it because I don't want to screw it all up and make a mess.

The thing I liked most about the game is the sheer amount of exploring and experimenting you have to do.  It presents itself like an actiony game where most people assume "hey, pick someone and beat the boss! Right?!"

Then they pick Royas, run through and quickly realize "Hey, what am I supposed to be doing, I went everywhere this guy can go and didn't beat the level!".   There are no levels!

I still have maps/doodles I made while playing the game with little marks indicating who can go where.

Nearly every screen can be treated as if it were a puzzle.  If you don't try everything, you won't make it!

The only other game like it is Maze of Galious on the MSX, and a homebrew MSX game called Caos Begins is also semi similar (a bit more Castlevanialike).

For example: Contra.

Legendary Axe predates both the arcade and Famicom version of Astyanax. But it is the ultimate version of that style of game. Which isn't saying much since the Astyanax pale in comparison to LA. :P

In all honesty, if the Turbo had gotten more Famicom ports it would've all but rendered the NES obsolete.

I wonder what a PCE version of Action 52 would've been like!

spenoza

You know, the whole Falcom thing really confuses me. They released many games in the same series that didn't play anything like each other. Seems like they should have chosen a naming scheme that told you something about the play style of the game so you wouldn't have to buy blind.

I would loved to have seen more Hucard RPGs, especially from big-name series. Sure, there were lots of CD and SCD RPGs, but if the NES could do fantastic RPGs, so could the PCE on Hu.

Arkhan Asylum

Agreed.

NES and SMS had Ultima games (IV on SMS, III, IV, V on NES).. why not PCE?

Final Fantasy 1 should've been there. MSX had an FF port ffs.

Same with Dragon Quest.

Magic of Scheherezade would've been nice.

Or some more new ideas, like Necromancer.  Necromancer is an awesome game.      There are some fun HuCard RPGs, but not enough of them.  Sindibad is pretty cool.

Was Ultima IV really released early enough to fall under that policy? But then, I guess I don't really know when it finally got struck down in court as anti-competitive.

I think Jesus would have been pretty rad as a SuperCD. It wasn't originally an FC game, but the FC version got the full upgrade treatment (such as it was) when going from the original PC version. That something I'm pretty used to seeing on PCE (ie: crude floppy based PC versions of games originally made for one button joysticks being hopped up and ported to superior consoles).

My understanding is that the entire Dragon Slayer "series" is named as such, because one the directors or whatever of the series required it, even though most of them had no connection, especially Lord Monarch, I think that was Dragon Slayer VII.  So, whichever guy was involved that required it, must've had LoX2 be his last project for Falcom.  There's probably an article explaining it on on Hardcore Gaming 101 or whatever.

Technically Dragon Slayer Legend of Heroes is part 1 of Dragon Slayer VI, along with Dragon Slayer Legend of Heroes 2 being part 2.  From there, the Legend of Heroes series went onto it's own series.  Very confusing....but interesting! :)

Distinctly confusipating.

Now, back to the topic at hand...  ; )

As much as I like the PCE Batman, I would loved to have had a side-scroller from Sunsoft, Batman or otherwise. They rocked the platformers with keen soundtracks on the NES. Some more love for the PCE would have been nice. Part of Sunsoft's downfall was throwing in too completely with Nintendo (and not developing their game design beyond action fluff pieces, I guess).

Well, its 80s anime/manga style. Other than that, no relation to my knowledge. Ulysses 31 was from that amazing well of greatness that was French/Japanese co-productions that brought us Mysterious Cities of Gold, and a bunch of other stuff.

As for the name, there is nothing Biblical about the game other than maybe some sort of plot point I can't understand due to me having almost no Japanese skills. Jesus is the name of a space station.

The FC version is a lot more fleshed out. Thats kind of why I think a SCD version would have been so cool. It could conceivably have been Snatcher-grade.

Well, probably not. It could have been a shorter Snatcher, with visuals just as nice.

Getting back to this topic, it seems to me that while a lot of games for the Turbo weren't "sequels" per se, many are spiritual descendants.  Neutopia has more in common with the original Zelda than that games' own sequels do, Dungeon Explorer is basically Gauntlet the RPG, and, ummm.... you guys can probably come up with more.  Also, Turbo got Galaga '88, which is probably the best game in that franchise, and as far as I know Turbo is the only system that has it.

I vote for Crystalis, one of my favourite RPGs ever.  Faxanadu is also a favourite of mine (anything RPG + platformer is, really), but it has descendants in other forms & I've never seen another game quite like Crystalis.  Basically the same thing again but with better graphics, slightly longer quest, & more character interaction.

I'm not sure how I would feel about a Mega Man on the PCE, because I really haven't cared for any of the nextgen graphics Capcom's come up with for the series.  But Contra would have rocked (would have been a perfect fit, I think) and I would totally love a Dragon Quest title with just slightly more detailed graphics.  That, to my mind, would be perfect.
