PUSH RUN BUTTON!

So, here's the official thread for our first "Plays Well..." Check in here or upload any useful tips, walkthroughs and/or videos here. Good luck!!

Here's a video Sadler posted in the poll thread. Looks like it's a great intro.

Well, tonight I played for about an hour. It took me a while to figure out how to heal (sleep in the bed in the house with the nun in it). I seem to have lost all the progress I made though because I can't figure out how to save. We probably need to figure that part out pretty quick...

I thought I was saving. I picked the blue file when starting the game. I hit "save" multiple times, and it make a nice little chiming noise as if it were saving. There is a save file in my Duo. I'm attempting to load it by choosing what I'm pretty damned sure is "continue" from the main title screen. "Tsuzuku" or something like that, and choosing "blue" again. Its not working though.

Someone under the posted video said this:

QuoteI wonder if Legend of Xanadu has a game save glitch? Let's say I save my game to the blue sphere. Once I shut the system off and power it back on, If I choose "continue" and select the blue sphere, it says that there is no save and begins the game from the beginning. Then once I begin a new game, I am able to bring up the status screen, choose "load", and my game progress loads. Does this happen to anyone else too?

I played through the entire game some years ago and I had no problem saving or loading from the title screen.

The game requires a huge amount of space for each save. If you have a save, and there is no space left it will fake save, and will result in the game starting over again.

Also mentioned, another game interacts with one of those saves, and the end results will as you described as well.

Probably the reason why this game has a debug/test mode still left inside it. In that mode you can access, all the 3d and 2d areas, and boss chambers. It is kinda depressing because the game is really nice to play.

was going to start the other night but will monday

To resolve the memory I'd back up all your saves to a ram card and delete everything off your internal memory. After doing this I'm saving the Xanadu save to it's own slot on the back up ram card. Just an idea.

Alright, let's talk about check points. I think the first should be the first boss. Here's a map of the first area:

IMG

See that cave in the upper left? There's a locked door in there. Behind it is the boss.

nat

Get ready for lots of fetch questing. You'll be running back and forth across these maps, top to bottom, talking to people, going back, re-talking to them, etc, in order to trigger events.

Xanadu is a fantastic game, but only the hardiest of the hardy will make it through to the end.

Do you remember the walkthrough at was incredibly vague that existed on the internets back in 2008? I've been having a heck of a time finding it for a few people who are getting stuck.

Yeah, this was stated from multiple sources multiple times during the voting process and still Xanadu 1 came out ahead. I sure didn't vote for it as I hate setting myself up for failure. I can't quite figure out why people voted for it...

We'll see how it goes.

I figured out my save issue. RegalSin was absolutely correct.

Even though it never told me I was out of space, and even though it made a nice chiming noise that seemed to confirm my saving was taking place, it just wasn't saving. I deleted my internal memory and now it saves perfectly. It still has the same file with the same name in my memory manager, but now it actually works.

Made some progress tonight. My dude is a lot tougher, I seem to have a slime for a friend. I think I'm supposed to take him to meet somebody, but I've taken him to everyone I can find.

I've cleared out the dungeon in the NW corner as much as I can, but I can't get into the door where I assume the boss is at.

Once, when leaving the cave, something bum rushed me an took off. I have no idea what it was. This was after an event was triggered in the cave where those eight barrels are.

The dude in the woods won't let me into his house. There is a little girl in a town who also won't let me in.

No, we don't doubt the game's greatness, we (Zeta, myself & others) just thought it might be better to start with a simpler game :)

Haha, yeah, that walkthrough was something else. It was like the guy played through the game, and then a year later wrote the walkthrough based on memory.

_________

PROTIP: The night/day cycle makes a big difference in this game, and also is a big part of the difficulty. Some events will only trigger at night, some characters will only show up in certain places at night, etc.

That said, I don't remember the game pulling such shenanigans this early in the adventure (although I could be wrong). I recall making it to the 2nd or 3rd area before having to consult a walkthrough.

Heh, well, looks like I'm in for a rough ride. :D I've scouted that cave, looted it for all it's junk, returned to town and talked to every one again. There's still the one lady in the town that refuses to talk to me, and the one guy in the mountains that's not interested in talking to me either. I have no blob buddy, but my guy is pretty powerful.

Any advice on where to go from here? Where's the blob buddy at? How do I get the villagers to go to the cave? Thanks!

ALSO, let me echo what Regal and Zeta said. I played for maybe an hour the other night, "saved" and lost that progress. Tonight I cleared out my backup memory before playing and saving actually works now.

Quote from: nat on 02/06/2012, 08:42 PMHaha, yeah, that walkthrough was something else. It was like the guy played through the game, and then a year later wrote the walkthrough based on memory.
________
LOL EXACTLY. Like it was some distant memory. It started out pretty in-depth... with a ASCII b/w picture and then it got progressively weirder and more vague with phrases like "I cant remember what you have to do here, something about the yeti's.." Like he had been eating brownies at a reggae festival. Although still I wish I had saved a copy of it for subsequent runthroughs.

The sheer adrenaline of trying to beat Xanadu overshadowed the need to document the process of the game. The resulting In hindsight, that really sucks, because I probably would sound just as loaded and detached in my effort to go through the game.

BTW, Zeta, once you get the slime-dude you have to wait until the eventing in the town in Map 1 to trigger the event that opens up the cave. I'm not sure if they celebrate you as a god or kick you out of town because you're (Arios) are an outsider. You will pick up Lykos (Ryukos) on Map 2.

CrackTiger

I can't offer any specific advice, but my experience, from what I remember, was similar to nat's. The first map is very tiny and straightforward and I zipped through without any help. I'm guessing that what you need to do to get into the boss zone is more obvious than it seems.

I'm pretty sure that you pick up the blob friend around the canyons in the North, possibly at the very top or along the outer rim? I'm pretty sure that you just come across it and then it's following you.
Justin the Not-So-Cheery Black/Hack/CrackTiger helped Joshua Jackass, Andrew/Arkhan Dildovich and the DildoPhiles destroy 2 PC Engine groups: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook, then the other by Aaron Nanto!!! SignOfZeta

I honestly can't remember where I got the blob. I've been wandering around for two nights now achieving nothing. I still need a key to get into the boss room.

People in the town will sometimes mention the slime, but no event. He follows me everywhere on the map and occasionally attacks other slimes. For whatever reason he doesn't follow me into the cave though.

Still can't get into that one girls house, or the house in the woods.
IMG

SignOfZeta

Ok, after my eighth run through of talking to every single person I've made some progress.

The guy in the woods won't let you in until you've talked to Melina. Melina won't let you in until you have a little event at the south part of the southern most town. For that to happen you need the slime. It wasnt actually night when this happened, but it was late in the day.

Sorry, I can't remember where I got the slime.

Had a long talk with the guy in the cabin.  He gave me a book or something (my first event item) so I suppose I just need to talk to every single person in the game 11 more times to eventually make that into a key.

I love the "leveling" process in this game. Watching that experience meter grow as you gleefully plow through waves upon waves of sword fodder is a pleasure unto itself.

It is, but I spent way too much time doing this and now I'm to the point where enemies can't damage me and I can kill them in one hit yet I'm still not really anywhere in the game. :D I'd advise new players not to spend a huge amount of time saving up gold to buy the most expense stuff and leveling up their armor/sword/shield at first. Just go to that cave, all the good sword/armor/shield in the first area is available in there for free. :D

Last night I made some progress getting Nickola to leave his little warehouse he locked himself into. There were a series of walking back and forth events that involved him, people in the western-most town, and the dude in the woods, who took back the event item I had.

I then went to the dungeon again and some people met me on the way out. I went inside to the area with the barrels and met people again. Then I left, had another event, and there I am now.

Still can't get in to see the boss. Still have the slime. Still need a key. Have something like 600 gold and haven't taken a single HP of damage in the last few hours.

You might have to talk to one of the elders in either town with the trees, but go back to the starting village where Sister is, there should be a ship waiting at the dock, it was night for me. wait there till the morning and some guys will show up and drive the story forward a little more.

I'm making some real progress in this game knowing only the kana, I'm sure it gets a lot harder soon. Got through Area 1, before I go further I'm working on uploading a video guide (my play through) to help out others. We're going to finish this game dammit!

Honestly I've been crazy busy these week. Doing some volunteer work, a couple of 12 hour days. Barely enough time to eat. I'm still playing though. I'm hoping to at least see a side scrolling section by the weekend.

But that aside...yeah, its taking a while. Between the speed of my character, the total lack of enemy challenge, and the small size of the first continent, I can literally talk to everyone, both day and night versions, in 10-15 minutes. Yet it still takes HOURS to do...basically nothing because the fuckers that made this game have you running from one side of the continent to the other dozens of times to achieve basically nothing. Its extremely artificially bloated.
