Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

So, which do you want more? An LT or a Laser Active?

xcrement5x

I dunno, both are pretty sexy.  I'd prolly say LA because there are games you can only play on it right now.

The horsecock was mighty tempting, but I voted for the LA.  There's nothing the LT can play that my current hardware can't already handle, so I'd rather have something different.

As everyone has pointed out, LA!

I am curious about the games.

LA = more games
LT = tiny screen, novelty
I'm a cunt, always was. Topic Adjourned.

I want a LT more, but I'm more curious about the LA games.

Jossshhhhh...Legendary TurboTrollX-16: He revenge-bans PCE Developers/Ys IV Localizers from PCE Facebook groups and destroyed 2 PC Engine groups: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook, then the other by Aaron Nanto!!! Josh and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together! Both times he blamed the Aarons and their staff in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner (extortion/blackmail!), never himself nor his deranged, destructive, toxic turbo troll gang!

PunkCryborg

well if the LA includes a PCE or Turbo pac, that makes it a tough decision

Samurai Ghost

LT all the way! I'm not a fan of interactive FMV games, and that tends to be the majority of the LA games. I have a ton of them on the Mega CD I never play.

The LT on the other hand is pure sex. Really want to get one for my briefcase set up. Then I can play any HuCard or CD game on the road. Fuck yeah!!

Horse cock comes in at distant third. I already have one of those.

While I wouldn't turn down the opportunity for either one, I went with the LT.  I've wanted one of those for ages.

MottZilla

I'd rather have a Super Grafx. You know, with Strider!

hoobs88

I have both but I agree with Necromancer's post below.

I really like the looks of the briefcase setup and i would LOVE to see an LT inserted into the unit. Ok so if I ever do this, can I still output the video to my tv? And if so...both displays will be on at the same time(?) I assume there is no way to turn the display off on the LT unless it turns off by default when you plug it in to a TV.

Damn the NEC/Hudson/red thought of everything. That looks like an old school portable computer, all that it is missing, is the drive input. In fact, that is all that is missing from that setup, I bet their is a way to convert to a fully working computer. I could be camping, and be like... never fear we got PCE.

IMG

What is even more funnier is how the screen display, was a fully color display, compared to the above computer, which was sold into the mid 1990's.

NEC had to create, the forsaken Supegrafx, and the rest of the Jackie Chan Gang.

The Laser Active was just a LD rom player, I am sure their are better LD roms out their? However we will have to do this by random. How many LD-rom games
was produced? In fact the same only LD-rom official game, was ported to CD and the
GBC. Then their is only one official LD-rom game system. Another cheap direction of
game design.

The LT is way cool and desirable in all kinds of ways.
The LA is also cool and desirable in a lot of way, plus LDs are fun to have. My current LD player is an industrial low-performer but I've heard the LA isn't so hot either. It's the NEC/SEGA modules that makes it tho', that is just bad ass.

Horse cock? I don't need that, it'll just end up collecting dust on a shelf anyway.

Every time I show my Laseractive to someone new, they are blown away.  Typically I have people hooked at Triad Stone, but Virtual Cameraman seems to be another favorite.

I have gotten to the point where I do all PCE, TG16, MD, and Genesis gaming on my LA, along with the LD games of course.  This versatility pushes the LA above the LT in my book.

soop

Compared to almost every PC Engine, the laseractive looks like ass.  In my opinion.

I had a LaserActive with Sega pack for a while, but it was huge and not as accessible. So I just played Sega games on my CDX instead. If I did get an LA again, I'd still just play regular Gen/MD and Turbo/PCE games on regular setups.

LT.

If there were different software on the LA, like Dragon's Lair, Space Ace, or a copy of Time Gal that didn't cost $1000 I'd be a lot more into it.

Also, I already have three LD players that are better at playing movies than the LA is so...it wouldn't get used very much, most likely.

Speaking of LD, I recently got a very good condition LD-W1 and I'm in awe of this wonderful beast. I will be sending it to the guy at Bayview soon to have it retrofitted with AC-3 and SPDIF and TOSLINK outputs giving me one of very few machines in the world that can play straight through four sides of an LD movie with Dolby Digital/DTS sound without getting off my fat ass.

I didn't know such a player existed, or that you could have them retrofitted in that way.  Very cool!

I think you can add AC-3 to basically any LD player. I'm pretty sure that in order to add digital outputs though you need to start with a player that was compatible with digital audio discs to begin with. The LD-W1 was one of the very first that was.

I love BR, btw, but the title selection right now isn't very good in general and in my prefered genre, anime, there is almost nothing. Blueray is also about as fun to collect as mini football helmets or Jar Jar Binks figures, whereas LD is about the coolest thing to collect there is, and usually quite cheap now.

I think my current laserdisc player has AC-3 but I am just using composite out currently. :(  It plays both sides of 1 disc, so I'm pretty happy.  My wife and I just watched Mission Impossible on laserdisc the other night and it would have been nice to not have to get up to swap discs (to side 3)

I agree that collecting for laserdisc is about the coolest thing to collect (next to tg/pce).  I wish there were some places locally that sold ld stuff.  I used to live in RI and it seemed like all of the Salvation Army's out there had ld stuff.  Out here it's bone dry.

SignOfZeta

The problem with AC-3 these days is that nobody has manufactured an AV receiver that will accept the raw signal in probably a decade or so. Therefore, most people need an RF demodulator or something similar to convert it to what is now considered a "standard" Dolby Digital signal. I use a Harmon Kardon box that converts AC-3 to six line level inputs which then go into my reciever.

The upgrade is huge, btw. The difference between Dolby Digital and Dolby Surround is VERY significant, even if the number of DD titles isn't.

Deletion

I voted LaserActive because I remember it from back in the day; I'm not sure I was even aware of the LT when it was out originally. The combination of a LaserDisc player and a game console was crazy and awesome. And I was awed when I came across it at Lechmere (Does anyone remember that chain?).

SignOfZeta

The LA and LT have one thing in common: they are both examples of extremely high end shit the likes of which current generation games have no understanding of whatsoever.

And here I am listening to the normal digital stereo audio track :o I don't suppose it's such a big upgrade if I don't have a surround speaker setup? (Tho' toslink out sounds nice).

If you don't have a multi-channel speaker setup then AC-3 is basically unusable. It's sole purpose is to give you 5.1 Dolby Digital. If you will only be listening to it in stereo/mono then the normal stereo audio you get from the PCM track will give you much better results. The AC-3 track *can* be mixed down to stereo but it's going to suck because it wasn't designed to do that. Volume levels will sound inconsistent, dialog will be drown out by rear surround effects, etc.

One of the big advantages or AC-3 LDs is that the mix isn't comprimised by making it compatible with downmixing like DVD tracks are. The separation and dynamic range is huge. Like I said though, this makes it a terrible track for mono/stereo purposes.
