so while the Saturn was the king of 32bit 2D games, the PSX had its fair share. What are you favorite sprite/2D games on the system.

Currently playing Megaman 8 and really enjoying it.

Yeah mega man 8 and the X series would be my favorite. Love how colorful 8 is

Hm...I don't have too many 2D games for my PS1 units yet, but dating sims aside, Strider 2 is pretty cool. It DOES have 3D backgrounds and special effects though.
CHECKPOINT!

I think that Klonoa: Door to Phantomile might count, it's pseudo 3D but still very fun in my opinion.

My favorite is probably the Gundam Battle series of 2D fighting games. They are built on huge multi-jointed sprites and you don't have to be a fan of fighters or Gundam to appreciate how good the games look. There are six games in the series with the best one (probably) being the US release called Gundam Battle Assault 2.

Macross: Do You Remember Love is a good port of the Saturn game. In the Hunt is actually better on PS than Saturn.

Then of course you have Symphony of the Night and Megaman 8, which are very good. Gunner's Heaven is...a bit to simplistic, but it's cool. Rakugaki Showtime is a 2.5D multiplayer fighter that is pretty awesome. There are a few Capcom and SNK games that actually didn't get raped too badly when ported to the PS, Street Fighter Zero 3, Pocket Fighter, Puzzle Fighter Metal Slug X...and KOF 95, which wasn't too bad.

Gunners Heaven which is an ok Gunstar Heroes knock off.  Hot Blooded Family is a decent beat em up Technosoft tunes.  It was also on Saturn.  Hermie Hopperhead is a nice hidden 2d platform gem.  There's also the psx version of Silhouette Mirage.  Even with some missing layers on some levels you wouldn't know unless it was side by side.  Umm...Raiden DX or Raiden Project.  Adventures of Lomax is also fucking incredible on the 2d animation front.  I'll see if I can remember some more.

EDIT:  Remembered a couple more.  Gradius Gaiden,  Lunar Silver Star Story Complete, Lunar  Eternal Blue, Arc the Lad.

My favourite PS1 exclusive 2D games:

Chippoke Ralph No Daibouken (Adventure of little Ralph)
Gradius Gaiden
Harmful Park
Einhänder
R-Type Delta
Super Pang Collection
Zanac X Zanac

And I never had it myself (I'm looking for it  :P) but in Youtube videos the game looks like a good title:

Panzer Bandit

bawitback

Oddworld and Heart of Darkness fo' realz.

and Silhouette Mirage.

Tomba!

... Yeah!
This "max-level forum psycho" () destroyed TWO PC Engine groups in rage: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook "Because Chris 'Shadowland' Runyon!," then the other by Aaron Nanto "Because Le NightWolve!" Him and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together... Both times he blamed the Aarons in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner, never himself nor his deranged, destructive, toxic turbo troll gang!

Most 2d games are pre-rendered 3d games on the PSX, or has something to make it look so. Seriously the 2d graphics on the PSX sucks compared to a 2d system or the Saturn. What draws people is the 3d effects, that are used non-stop constantly.

   Arcade Gears: Wonder 3
Night Striker
Time Bokan series
Castlevania Chronicles
Block Kuzushi
Cotton Original
DonPachi
Firemen 2
Geki-Oh
.... and lots of other Capcom/Namco collections

(Most of my PSX games are 2D!  )

Yeah, for those who know, the psx is a real 2D platform heaven.
Sadly most of it never made it to oversea.

But in the case of geki-oh, i wouldn't recommend the psx version. same goes for all st-v ports.

I kinda liked Gex too.  Though, I feel the game can be played better elsewhere.

also this is a very nice one (as far roosters a.k.a. midnight wanderers goes), one of my fav 1990 arcade games. had two CPS-1 boards of that game back then.

but unfortunately there are some restrictions in animation and sound reproduction issues on the psx version.
tho, I am very sure the psx could have handled the 1991 CSP-1 game without any issues.
