Sorry, I posted the other one in console chat.  Derp.

Anybody here into healthy eating?  I've started working out recently to build up some muscle, and despite some good results, I'm thinking about dropping some science in the mix.

At the moment I'm looking at nutrition and maybe putting a bit more fruit in, maybe even some of those protein shakes.  Does anybody have any experience with this stuff?

I BET YOU LIKE PROTEIN SHAKES.

Is this like a drastic change for you, or have you been leaning towards eating a fairly healthy style for a while?  If you want to build muscle you should look into some sort of shake/drink right after working out.  If you are doing something like P90x the best way to build muscle is to keep up with the exercise and eat decent.

Do you drink Soda or eat unhealthy foods or did you at one time?  I know some people notice results right after they change their diets and cut out soda.

my diet's never been too bad actually, I tend to avoid soda as a soft drink (only ocasionally as a mixer), and stick to water squash tea and beer.  Always been fairly meat-centric, but not a great deal of junk food, and I have a fast metabolism.
Also, since we moved office, there's no canteen, so it's a choice between sandwiches and crisps, or bring something in, which I usually do - like a stew or something in tupperware I can nuke.

As for training, it's not particularly hectic.  The schedule is
day 1) hammer curls, bicep curls, skull crushers, and what other arm exercise I feel like mixing in.  usually 3 reps of each on high weight, as many as possible (around 10)
day 2) rest
day 3) dumbell flies, press-ups
day 4) rest
and repeat, along with a 3 minute abs exercise and leg exercises whenever.  The rota above is just to try and avoid overtraining the same muscles.

So it's not like a massive gym session or whatever, and I'm still trying to figure out some fun cardio to do, but I'm concious that I might not be eating optimally.

If you think it's a good idea, I'll look into geting some of those protein shakes, but I think I might buy some bananas, veggies, yogurt and hummus tonight for protein snacks and see how that goes.  I like those foods anyway so it can't  hurt, but apparently I should be eating 3000 calories a day, and using my fag-packet maths, that's a huge amount of food.  I read about one guy that eats a whole chicken EVERY DAY.

This is how I stay in shape:

1) Only drink pop and binge eat on bacon/chips/cake on weekends.  During the week I eat salad at work mostly because I am cheap and salads cost like 1$.  So apparently you get a ton of green healthy food as a result
2) Rollerskating (including twirly shit and balancing).   It gives you one hell of a workout.
3) Lazer Tag all day on saturdays.    You want cardio?   Go run around with a lazer rifle and a vest on.   YEAH

screw all that boring exercise shit and a ton of effort.  Just run in circles and shoot little kids with a lazer for an entire saturday.

I think you have a good workout regimen.  If you want to add the shakes/drink things... Usually add those to your diet directly after working out.  It's supposed to feed your body in the best places or some wizard/ papashango thing like that, if you wait more than 30-60 mins after a good workout it won't be as *SUPER* effective...

Surprisingly fun. My buddy did lasertag for his birthday last year and we did indeed hose a lot of 8th graders. Unfortunately, the place around here doesn't let you run, so I don't know how much of a workout it is.

You can't run at the ones here either.  On top of that it can be frustrating when the small kids just follow you around. You aren't allowed to run so you just end up with some lil turd following you around in circles shooting you in the back.   [-X

I turn Vegeterian in the begginig of the year, NOT VEGAN!!
The only thing I eat that's from animal is cheese cause vegeterian cheese is nasty, I was around 230 when I started, I would jog 10 miles 4 to 5 days a week. Since then I drop down to 164. I do weight lifting but not a lot and cut out the majority of body fat..

Stay away from refined sugars, anything that has corn by product and saturated fats. If you eat meat cut down on it a little and introduce more veggies to you're diet. A protein shake after a work out is good, but try to get protein from a natural/organic store.

Sitting down for 8 hours burns as many calories as jogging for 1 hour. FACT.

Holy shit man.  I run around 3.5-5 miles 3 times (ish) a week.  10 miles is pretty hardcore.  Did you just start running the 10 miles, or did you build up to that.  I never jogged a day in my life before 2008, then just gave it a shot, and now it's a regular routine.  In 2008 I was 260 and was down to 195 at my lowest.  Since I've kept up with working out I've flatlined around 205/210 mark.  What is a good way to build up to regularly running 10 miles a day?

The longest run I ever did (non stop) was 11.5 miles.

No, it took me around 5 weeks to work from 2 miles to 10, every week I would add 2 miles to my routine, the longest I did was around 12 miles non stop. Congrats on the weight drop, one thing people take from granted are a good pair or running shoes!! I would always jog in sneakers or basketball shoes, I picked up some running shoes and wow do they make a difference, but just slowly build up to it, learn breathing technics while you are jogging, learning to control you're breath helps

You aren't supposed to run at this Lazer tag place either, but it doesn't stop anyone.  They only yell if you sprint like you're in the olympics and steam roll a little kid.

I used to play Laser tag nearly every day for many years.  Yikes.  In fact, some of my close friends now are the guys I met there all those years back :)

I did my arm workout yesterday, then went out and bought bananas, cottage cheese, hummus, quark (which has low fat and insane protein!), carrots and celery.  Got a bunch in my bag right now for a tasty snack.

I was gonna go jogging with Donna, but every time I do...  it's like I have 2 speeds, fast walking and fast running.  I can't seem to jog properly because it's like bouncy running, so I go faster and get too knackered (I smoke, so yeah, that's probably a lot to do with it).  I need to build up gradually, plus I find running kind of pointless and dull.

Played it once in the summer and once in late fall.  My advice, play in the summer.  Late fall where I live can get cold and those paint balls tend to get more solid as the temperature drops.  I took a paintball in the side of the neck and went down faster than a little girl with a skinned knee.  I ended up with a boil the size of a marble where it hit me and a purple/black/yellow bruise the size of Greenland around the area where it hit me.  After I stopped writhing around in the wet field, I picked up my paint gun only to see the pink paint pellet that hit me (still intact) a few feet away from the barrel.

Note to anyone thinking of playing paintball:  The paint balls hurt a helluvalot more when they hit you and don't break.
I'm busy playing pinball, but I still drop by to visit.

Soop:

Diet can vary a lot depending on what you're trying to accomplish (fat loss, muscle gain, etc). General rule of thumb is just portion control. I'd honestly say weight loss is 70% diet and 30% exercise in the initial phases. Lose weight with diet and use exercise to build muscle, tone up and feel better.

Lots of fruits, veggies and fiber help out a lot as well as limiting your types of meat and processed foods. If you're doing a lot of heavy weightlifting or playing sports, using a whey protein shake can be a good recovery tool to get you back in the gym or on the field sooner with less soreness.

If you're really serious about getting more muscle mass, Creatine does work very well but be warned that the results tend to disappear once you stop cycling through it.

Here are some general "lifestyle change" kinds of things that work for me:
1.) Limit bread intake of any kind (switch to wraps when possible)
2.) Get rid of chips/dips/bad snacks. Replace with unsalted almonds (in moderation), fruit, etc.
3.) Get in the habit of eating a piece of fruit / yogurt / glass of water in the morning. don't skip breakfast but don't eat a dozen donuts either
4.) Avoid red meat - do chicken or fish instead when possible
5.) Everything in moderation - diets are about a permanent lifestyle change, not about dumping everything you love for a set period of time. You'll go nuts if you don't have the occasional pizza, just be smart about it

jeffhlewis, that's some good advice there. I don't want to commit to anything I won't stick to, I know there's a very real chance I could lose interest.  I'm actually eating a lot of bacon right now, probably too much, and I can't quit steak and pizza, but I can add in some good stuff to balance out the occasional misdemeanor.

As for the shakes.. I can feel sore the next day, but it's not uncomfortable.  /Maybe I'm not working out enough to warrant them?

From what a friend says he takes a 30s rest between sets, but I'll go to my absolute limit each time, and I literally can't go near the weights again for 5 minutes +.  On my triceps (skullcrushers) yesterday, it got to the point where on my 4th set, I felt a sharp pain near my elbow that I was pretty sure was my tendon getting yanked,

so I tend to do muscle specific  exercises in weights I can do around 10 reps with, but go until I can barely lift it (maintaining good form), sometimes taking like 6 or so seconds. This is what I understand to be the best way to increase mass.
