Radiant Silvergun's got my vote as well. It's a corner stone of the schump genre, nuff said their. Any of the three games would add serious weight to any collection, and I'd be proud to have anyone of them on my shelf.

so my favorite game series would have to be devil may cry, and i have a big list of consoles ranging wayyyy back i was wondering does anyone know what games insipred or play anything like DMC? or just great hyper/twitch/chaotic action games on systems older than ps2 preferably 2d games. anything would be helpful as my searches havent been very good thus far cuz i need some extremely crazy 2d or old school 3d love of the non schump kind

Exactly, the kind of people who love Halo and CoD and claim to be hardcore but have never heard of things like Punch Out, JSR, Killer7, Beyond Good and Evil never mind sat down and mastered a schump or a 2D fighter and will sadly never allow themselves those pleasures

I picked up a CIB Darius Gaiden for $5 this weekend and have been playing a bunch of that.

Anyone know a good place to buy Saturn schumps other then ebay? There are a bunch I want to play but most of them are well over $60 and you have to ship them from overseas.

I have been wanting to play Last Hope on DC as well. I have the original and pink bullets version but both are still sealed and I can't decide which one to open.

I like to see things structured, so we have some background about the game, a summary of the plot and most importantly what genre the game it.

I like to hear some proper constructive criticisms, if the game is bad then why is it bad? what exactly could have been done better? If its good, then what is it about the games mechanics that make it stand out from the rest?

I don't see the need for reviews to talk too much about which buttons do what, and what things are in what menus etc etc. I'd rather hear about how responsive the controls are and more general statements about the arrangement of in game menus or anything like that.

I also think that they should be concise. The average length of a review at Sega-16 is just about right for me. Long enough to be detailed, but not so long that I lose interest.

Also, sometimes I like to know about the reviewers stance on the genre in general - are they schump veterans or is this a new genre to them. Its often relevant to assessing whether the reviewers opinion might match mine. I don't mind reviewers showing bias, so long as I can tell that their opinion is bias.

Actually the Taito F3, a.k.a. Cybercore, can work in either mono or stereo. It works in mono by default on JAMMA, and works in stereo by installing a harness from the "S" connector directly to the speakers. That is the same 4-pin connector that appears on the picture of the board, closest to pin 1.

According to my manual, you do have to connect pins 5 and E to -5V. Probably to get stereo, I am not sure. And the volume is set via test mode.

I also saw those region-free modifications, and I think that they should be done by someone with a steady hand and alot of experience. I do own an English (American label) Taito F-3 board with Puzzle Bobble 4, and I am planning to purchase a Japanese F-3 board just to play the Japanese only games.

Finnally, the Taito F-3 system is great if you like puzzles. The shooters are OK, but they are nothing compared to the better schumps out there. The only decent schump, and a very hard one to find IMO, is Ray Force. This game is a vertical shooter and is only of of two games that came cartless (hybrid mother board with game, ala SVC Chaos). The other F-3 game that came cartless is Ring Rage, which I own. Before I forget, there is a good mixture of horizontal and vertical oriented games making the best system for the Taito Egret cab.

And good luck finding them as they rarely show up on eBay, specially the American label ones. Oh, I can know see myself in a bid war with you for a F-3 game. :loco:

Sparky, i've had problems hooking up LCD's myself with lag. Even on "Game Mode" it doesn't work that well. It's not so bad with rpg's but I've noticed a significant problem with side scrollers and schumps where you need to be very precise.

Baten Katios Origins (Cube) - One of the best RPGs of this gen, getting a much-deserved sequel. Thank you Nintendo and Namco.
9) Milestone Dreamcast Schump (Dreamcast) - Dreamcast for life. I'm happy that Milestone is still supporting the consoles even in 2006, and with Under Defeat as good as it was this and the rest should be good too.
10) Yoshi's Island 2 (DS) - Finally, a new YI game.

Chaotix hard to find? I always see it floating around for $20 or under.

hmmmm there megadrive20xx uses schumps but later on another forum.....

Whenever I see threads about SHUMPS, or "Shooters" as I grew up with them being called, everyone brings up names like:

Gates of Thunder
1943
Twin Cobra

and a bunch of others, but the game I never see mentioned at least in my opinion is Blue Lightning that came out for the ATARI LYNX. Yeah I know it's dated, but it was actually a good game. This and Ninja Gaiden were the jewels of the LYNX. Does no one remember Blue Lighting though?

Blazing Star- What a great SHUMP. It has it all in my opinion. Not the best of all time but close.

super r-type - couldn't get past the second to last stage, due to my increasing disinterest with the game (slow paced combined with slowdown isn't a good thing in a shump imo).

Video gaming is full of terms that are defined by their early use and not from being an exact term that can not be used in any other way. "Shooter" became slang for games like Gradius and Star Soldier early on. It makes no sense to say that terms like 1up make no sense and ask ridiculous questions like "one up what? One could mean any number of things and up can only be intetpretted as a direction.

"Shmup" is a separate issue. As has been demonstrated already, the types of people who like to use the term tend to take lazy language even further.

At first I thought it was clever.  You know the idea of consolidating letters and syllables from 'Shoot 'em Up' to just Shmup, but then it just got out of hand and wasn't nearly as clever when people that had no business saying shmup were saying shmup.....
