Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

Keranu, nice job on the article and photos.

To respond to one of the comments you made in the article, the big Atari "Video Game Selection Center" thing in the museum was just a store display unit. Back in the day, they had these set up at department and discount stores to demo Atari VCS games. You just picked the game you wanted to try before you buy, and could play 'til someone kicked you off. I remember playing Atari games on that unit myself when I was a kid. They were always interesting because they had high-quality built-in joystick and paddle controls, and the fire buttons were arcade-style. Anyway, that particular unit that was at the MGC was the Sears version, because as you probably know, Sears marketed the 2600 and Intellivision consoles under their own brand name.

I was really quite excited to see that particular piece of hardware -- it brought back some very vivid memories! :D

Keranu

Ahh, thanks for filling me in. That's what we expected it to be, but just weren't sure and haven't seen it before. It sure is cool though!

Hey Guys,

We did one more interview with Martin Alessi and Trickman Terry from the old EGM days.  They're now both working on a new magazine and website called www.retroplayer.tv along with Sushi X and others.  In the interview, they talk about the magazine and reveal the identity of Sushi X.

Check it out here:

It's the 6/12 episode.

Sounds cool, I forgot all about Sushi X.

I listened to 6/12 and the one that immediately followed it. Needless to say, it was neat that there were recent TG-16 converts actually praising some of the games. DHG Hunter

Sorry for dragging up an old topic, but I was searching for a few things via Google and wanted to answer some questions I saw here. =)

Quote from: KeranuThe game display room in the event hall had a Turbo Duo set up and some games with. The main two games the guy displayed on it were Devil's Crush and Dracula X, I don't recall seeing any other games displayed even though I saw a small stack of other Turbo games by the system (we couldn't change the game ourselves). Both games got good attention, especially Devil's Crush, which made my day.
Devil's Crush is Lance's (one of my friends and helper at the show) favorite Turbo game, so that probably saw a lot more play than normal, hehe.  A few people asked to play Dracula X so I set that up... It's disappointing to see folks get frustrated with that one and put it down, however.  Obviously its a great game if you give it some time. =)

Games were changeable if you found me or one of my guys.  We'll probably have some shirts or something to set us apart this year.  Other games I *think* I had at the show were:

- Legendary Axe 2
- Splatterhouse
- Dungeon Explorer 2
- Flash Hiders
- Gain Ground SX
- Kiaidan 00
- Lords of Thunder
- Police Woman Sapphire

There's probably another game or two that escapes me, but like you said, Devil's Crush and Dracula X dominated most of the game time. ;)

Quote from: KeranuAlso next to the Turbo Duo was a Super Grafx with the case of Aldynes and Battle Ace displayed next to it and next to that was a PC-FX, with the cases of Battle Heat and that women wrestling game. I believe that was all the Turbo-related things I saw there.
Everything was set up for the SuperGrafx, however, we ran out of TV's so I had to pick and choose what would be playable.  We might have set it up for someone later on, I'm not 100% sure.

The PC-FX games were Battle Heat and Queen of Queens.  I'd really like to get a copy of Zenki one of these days, but finding a reasonably priced copy isn't very easy, hehe.

We also had the Turbo Express there, however, the portables area that it would have been in got axed at the last second because we couldn't figure out an easy/safe way of making those playable.  Plus, I'm extremely worried about burn-in with that system, lol.

Quote from: Keranutorgo, by any chance were you the guy who seemed to be incharge of that room in the event hall with all the systems including the Duo with Dracula X?
Quote from: torgoNo, the tall guy in that room is the one that owns ALL of those systems. He was actually the first one to see Fantasy Star Soldier when I pulled it out of the "archives" back in '03/'04, so I gave him a copy after I saw how dedicated he is to the "craft."
Both Marty Goldberg (the guy you heard speak) and I put the room together.  He has a lot of the pre-NES stuff and I basically cover everything post-NES.  It works out nice because we can pretty much hit every console between the two of us.

I still have that Fantasy Star Soldier beta. =)  I think I had it at the show too.  Thank you! =)

Quote from: TJI really wanted to try the SuperGrafx, but there was always someone playing Devil's Crush on the Turbo.
There was a guy there that had never played Devil's Crush before and somehow figured out how to do the infinite points trick (timing it so that an enemy pops you back into the bonus area each time you bounce out).  He absolutely destroyed Lance's record which he wasn't too happy with, lol. =P  I think Lance worked at beating his own high score for much of the day after that.  Hopefully all of the Turbo stuff can be playable this year since I believe you guys are doing your own area now. =)

Quote from: jlued686Oh, and I also almost bought a Neo Geo arcade cabinet, but when the time finally came to make my decision, it had been sold.  DOH!
I tried telling you it was a great deal, hehe. ;P  As it turned out a friend of mine ended up buying it for her husband at the show.  Nice wife. ;)

Quote from: martygLOL, no he doesn't own all the systems.  ;)  If you draw a diagonal line across the room, half was his half is mine.  J.D. collects consoles and games from 1985 (NES) until present and specializes in a lot of hard to find Japanese and other imports.  I collect everything from 1972 until present though specialize in the pre-NES material (1972-1985), as well as computers.
Yeah, that pretty much sums it, Marty. ;)

Quote from: keranuGreat pics, jlued. And I noticed you got one of our bandit hogging the Devil's Crush!
LOL, yeah, that's Lance.  He was pretty upset at his high score going down like that. ;P

I may be getting my duo modded by D-Lite soon, if he has time to do it. I just got my modded Neo Geo back from Jeff Kurtz yesterday, and I can't play it enough now. If I getthe Duo modded, I may bring it so that there's an extra available. The MGC was pretty rad last year, is there any information on the guests this year?  I hope Marty gives another talk this year about history, that was pretty interesting.  Too bad he only gave it because Mr. Baer couldn't make it.

If Team Fremont is coming again this year, we'll need to rig the selection so that Keranu represents LD on the gameshow instead of NASA and I.  We totally beefed the game show.  :-({|=

Is anyone else going this year?  I'm going to try to make it again this year, and I know the rest of the Crete Nerd HURD is as well.

Seriously, though, that's NOT a Pac Man hat. It's doesn't even qualify as a hat + chinstrap. I don't know what it is, but my best guess is that it is Halloweenus Maskus Pac Man.

We'll have to ask Kamino if Marty is going to make another speech, I hope he does. Marty will be there regardless though. Kamino told me that he's trying to get David Crane to come this year, which would rule! We have to get all our Activision games signed by him.

I imagine he will again.  He's give a speach every year it has been available I believe.  I have a lot of respect for the people that get up there and do it... It takes a long time to prepare those speaches, and if nobody shows up it feels like a big waste.  The panel area will be right in the middle of the Museum Area this year instead of being tucked away in a corner as it has been in years past.

Crete as in Crete, IL?  That's not very far away from here...   8-[

Quote from: XiphasWe totally beefed the game show.
Hehe, I think the general consensus is that there will be more harder questions this game show rather than easier ones...  We had actually planned the show with the thought that about every other question could be passed until a game was played, so we had like 12-ish games playable.  However, everyone seemed to be more interested in taking a guess at the questions rather than playing the games which kinda sucked.  I know TF really wanted Bonk to be played once, and it was passed over each time.  :?

Quote from: KeranuWe're gonna need a lot of TVs!
About how many tables do you guys see yourselves possibly taking up?  I've been trying to get a hold of Turbo_Sage via e-mail, but no luck recently.

I figure you're going to have a Turbo/PC-Engine + TV, Turbo Duo (or just plain CD) + TV, a PC-FX + TV, and a SuperGrafx + TV.  So you should have about 4 playable systems, plus a Turbo Express perhaps.

I would also suggest bringing an extention cord and a few power strips just in case... They ran out of strips last year and we had to use a lot of our own to conpensate.  It should be better this year, but best safe than sorry. =)

If you want to go over some of the stuff, feel free to e-mail me at my safe-for-boards e-mail at mwgc_museum@yahoo.com, or PM me and I can send you my real e-mail.  I check both, however.

Not sure about the tables yet, but Dan said that they should be able to supply some tables for us. Here are the set ups we have thus far:

Turbo Grafx 16, Turbo Grafx 16 + CD, Turbo Duo, PC Engine + CD, Super Grafx (hopefully), PC-FX, at least two Turbo Expresses/PCE GTs, and maybe a PC (used for programing and game demos, unless we have a flash card to use). Each display will have it's own purpose, like one will be for five player games, another for niche titles, and another for rare goodies, etc...

That guy was so rockin' to the max!  I hope he comes this year.  Him, a friend and myself sat up till like 1am in the hallway outside of the main doors playing Jaguar and PCFX.  we were sitting around, and asked Dan if it was cool if we played some vids in the hallways...lol so we stole some tables and hooked up a TV and gamed!  Was truly excellent.  Too bad I didn't have an extra PCFX gamepad though- we had to take turns and watch each other play Super Power League and Zenki and a few others.

I could literally throw a stone and have it end up in Crete. =P  That close.  ;)

Anyway...

I e-mailed Turbo_Sage with an early layout and a few details about your area.  He can either pass along the details to you or I can e-mail them to you directly, your choice.

The show will certainly be more packed than it was last year.  Where as the Wisconsin room was just the Museum and the panel/speaker area, this year all of the stuff in the Illinois room like the Underdog Chamber and Jagfest will be in the Wisconsin room this year, as well as a lot of other special areas like your Turbo Fest that we'll announce in the future.  The entire Illinois room is going to be made up of tournaments and other events this year.  The Olympia room (where you saw all of the arcades and vendors) should remain relatively the same.

To make this all fit we're maximizing the space in the Wisconsin room and we have a lot more tables available this year.  It should be fun...  For those that saw the museum area last year, this new layout is going to be a huge improvement.

Quote from: DHGI e-mailed Turbo_Sage with an early layout and a few details about your area.  He can either pass along the details to you or I can e-mail them to you directly, your choice.
That would be great if either one of you could email the details to me at k3ranu@yahoo.com

Hehe, not University Park.

Anyway, I'll forward the e-mail to you in just a bit.

Quote from: Xiphas on 03/03/2007, 11:36 PMIf Team Fremont is coming again this year, we'll need to rig the selection so that Keranu represents LD on the gameshow instead of NASA and I.  We totally beefed the game show.  :-({|=
We'll be there, and yes, we'll be doing the game show again.

We're almost there so I'm bringing the topic back up front again :D I'll be at the MGC on Sunday the 10th!

I'm interested in the shmup tournament, I may sign up for it. I better get back in practice though, I'm not as good of a shmupper as I was 8 or 10 years ago... :P Also, I think this year I'm gonna spring for some of those wireless SNES controllers from Messiah.

Hope to see some of you there again!

BonkThis

man, I wanted to go soooooooooo bad, this blows! I was hoping to get there to meet some of your turbo freaks. Can someone take a lot of photos?

Hobo Xiphas

I'm sure Keranu will do another write-up on it like he did last year.

Alas, I'm not going this year either.  Oh well.  :?

DHG Hunter

Keranu,

Do you still need me to bring a Super Grafx?  Just wanted to double check before packing. =)

I picked up two games since I was there last time, Grandzort and Daimakaimura (Ghouls 'n Ghosts), to go along with Battle Ace and Aldynes.  Let me know what you're interested in.

Later.

Keranu

Yeah as far as I know, you're our best option for setting up a Super Grafx if you don't mind :) .
