@GTV reviews the Cosmic Fantasy 1-2 Switch collection by Edia, provides examples of the poor English editing/localization work. It's much worse for CF1. Rated "D" for disappointment, finding that TurboGrafx CF2 is better & while CF1's the real draw, Edia screwed it up...

Might as well make a thread for this. I'll post status updates as they happen.

At the moment, Esperknight has basically cracked the text encoding in the game, and appears to have successfully dumped all of the script from the first town. I'm guessing that this actually comprises at least 10% of the game's total text, since that first town has lots of variation depending on which character type you choose.

Fortunately, from what it sounds like, the rest of the game script shouldn't be that hard to get out.

Right now, I'm working on what we have, and it's fairly easy going. Hopefully the whole first draft can be done in 50 hours or so.

So, away we go!

Are you guys intending to finish this before Xanadu 2?  I'm looking forward to playing both.  Hurray for more PCE games in English!

I imagine we'll finish X2 first. X2's script is done (until we can play-test it, anyway), so I'll be working on AFS while Esperknight does his thing on X2. :)

You and Esperknight are working on so many projects! I really respect the amazing work ethic you guys have and I look forward to seeing all your projects completed.

It is going to be really cool when Xanadu 2 is finished. I still remember seeing SamIAm's help wanted ad for voice talent 2 years ago on romhacking.net. It has been ages since I last listened to the lines I recorded for the dub...they're probably pretty bad.

Awesome!  Another grand rpg getting translated.

Oh fuck yeah!! Some beautiful eye candy there! That really is a full-fledged 16-bit SNES looking RPG - never knew it was that good graphically and color-wise! I never got passed the opening sequence after realizing I'd never be able to fan-translate it back when I started working on Xak III and Ys IV. It looked nice enough even from that point, but since the text was compressed and I was just checking to see if it wasn't, I never did anything with it again (Ys IV was the only RPG I ever played through in Japanese and I got stuck, so that's not my thing...). But yeah, would be great if EsperKnight/SamIam actually do get this thing fan-translated!!

Yeah, look at that... Fucking gorgeous! I'd guess I was looking at a SNES RPG from those.

Hi guys.

Good news and bad news.

The bad news is just that nothing much has happened with AFS. Esperknight has been bounced around between a few jobs in the last couple of months and has had even less time than usual to work on things.

I don't have quite the same good excuse for not having worked on the AFS script, but I do have the good news: the Princess Crown translation project I've been working on is extremely close to being finished. The script is translated and edited, and the text is displaying in the game for all scenes as far as we've tested. There's only to get the menu working and to do a final proofread of the script, which will include making sure all the lines fit neatly in their boxes. There will probably be a play-test period, and then that's it.

http://www.cyberwarriorx.com/?p=48

Xanadu II continues, as Esperknight continues to pin down issues one after another. It really sucks how complicated this one turned out to be on the hacking side.

While I'm here, I should message Bonknuts about wrapping up Spriggan mk2 soon as well.

And that's the latest.

seieienbu

Thanks for the update.  I liked Odinsphere and Muramasa but never bothered to try Princess Crown.  Now I'm going to keep an eye on your project and when its done finally give the game a playthrough.

I have a Saturn and owned a copy of it for a while, but my Japanese wasn't quite good enough to keep up, and I wanted to know what was going on, so I let it drop for a while.

I never got around to picking it up.  As far as import Saturn games go, it's always been a bit on the price-y side of things.

edit:  or has it?  Ebay is saying it goes for ~$50 now, I remembered it going for ~$100.  Did the price take a hit recently?

Princess Crown should be getting cheaper. My local shop has 5 copies for 2100-2500 yen apiece depending on condition (all are complete with spines). I recently got a brand new sealed copy of the Satakore version for a mere 2300 yen at the same shop.

These days 2500 yen for all but a handful of Saturn games is actually a lot. The vast majority of the library is 50-500 yen.

But it's supposed to be the most expensive library to buy games from after Neo Geo and followed by PC Engine..

The Saturn has a lot of rare/valuable/OMGEBAY titles, but the bulk of the JPN library is dirt cheap. I'd say the PC Engine is, on the whole, pricier than the Saturn.

Thanks, guys. Encouragement helps. :)

You know what would also be really great? If one of you - maybe someone who's already played the game before and isn't worried about spoiling the experience - could play AFS in Mednafen (gotta be Mednafen) and get Esperknight and myself a bunch of savestates. As it stands, it's looking like the best way to locate all the text is to use savestate hacking. Right now, we don't have very much text dumped because we just haven't gotten that far into the game. I've beaten it once, but it was on a real system.

A savestate outside of every town before something new happens there, and maybe deep in dungeons before events, would do the job nicely. Saving me the time playing means I can spend it translating. Any takers? I think it's a 20 hour game or so. Probably 30 if you go slow and it's your first time, but definitely less if you use the fast-forward button in Mednafen smartly during the battles. :)

BigusSchmuck: That would be cool. If you think it's something you can do, let me know when you start, and I'll let everyone know that you've got it.

Black Tiger: Even if you only have one or two savestates, if they're far enough into the game that the later towns are unlocked, that would be pretty significant. We could get huge chunks of text that way. Let me know if you find anything!

EDIT: The thing about Blood Gear is that it's got so many prolonged cutscenes with lots of dialogue, it's really hard to do without either a huge dubbing effort or some kind of custom subtitle system.

Also, I can't help but notice that Japanese reviews almost always pan this game.

I'd do it if someone wanted to get on the hacking, because it's not a very long game. But this is the problem with the PCE translation scene - there aren't enough hackers.

M1Savage

I've got huge amounts of savestates for this game but unfortunately none in Mednafen. Glad to see it's still being worked on!
