Microsoft has made it clear that they consider you a drone and intend to control how you enjoy video games.
If Microsoft does a 180 and decides this isn't such a good idea then fine. But, if they do not listen and continue their arrogance vote with your wallets and pocketbooks.

Tatsujin

I never buy a M$ console, but then again who even cares.

I'll give Sony credit for changing their minds and doing the sensible thing by reversing their decision to disallow used games.

Bardoly

I have never purchased a Microsoft console or a Sony console, and I doubt that I will anytime soon.

thesteve

i chose not to buy any new systems
the games are far too expensive and lacking in the fun department
further i wont be getting a win7/win8 phone unless it gets cracked wide open like the win mobile6 series

But regarding the issue at hand, here's the deal. These new consoles are bullshit. They offer nothing substantially new from the current gen. Honestly, games in general have changed very little since the Dreamcast, well over a decade ago, except in the departments of sound and graphics. Game design annoys the shit out of my now. The scene is dominated by me-too fps crap and brown-ass time vampire western RPGs and everything has a fucking BOOK WORTH of boring frustrating long-winded tutorial. If I actually had an Xbox 720 or a PS4 you couldn't PAY ME to play the fucker and this is the truth. I barely touch my PS3 and as it is, and that thing is powerful enough to give me every gameplay experience I'd ever want (most recent purchase: league bowling, a game I already own on MVS).

If you are going to boycott these idiot boxes, do it for reasons like mine, or just cave now and preorder the thing. The whole "blocking used games" thing, guess what, they aren't going to do it. Sony didn't "reverse their decision" they never made that decision. As long as you think you win you'll buy the dumb thing. Its the same reason why the federal government lets rednecks keep their guns; as long as they have them they are pacified and will exercise their FREEDOM...to go to work, pay their taxes, sit on their asses and not do anything to change the status quo.

Yeah, I love that guy. Nobody rants better than he does. The only reason I have a 360 is because a friend of mine gave me his old one that wasn't working and said I could keep it if I could fix it, which I did after lots of youtube and google searches to figure out what was wrong with it. I never would have bought one, but I wasn't gonna turn down a free one. I haven't taken it online once since I got it and aside from downloading games from XBLA, I have no intention of taking it online. I never liked MS as a gaming company because when the original Xbox came out, they all acted like arrogant pricks and talked as if they knew the business better than the companies who'd been in it for years. Not the best way to make a good first impression. I hope the new system fails so hard that "Xbox" becomes a synonym for epic failure (as in "North Korea tried to bomb the US and got their ass kicked? That's some Xbox level shit there, man.").
I am bad and that's good. I will never be good and that's not bad. There's no one I'd rather be than me.

FiftyQuid

I'll take a look at the PS4 when it comes out.  I'm a Sony fanboy so I can't help it.  I own two PS3's, and a 3rd broken one.  All of them are the fat design.  I dislike the Slim and Super Slim.  Actually bought a Slim and returned it the next day for reasons I won't go into here.

Microsoft can bite my ass though.
I'm busy playing pinball, but I still drop by to visit.

I love my Xbox 360, but if this shit takes place. I wont buy it.  I do have to say this though, Zeta makes sense.  It most likely IS some freaking marketing scheme.

I agree with what Zeta says myself. If there is something larger going on here it wouldn't surprise me. In the meantime, my wallet will be happy. :)

If this is just a marketing scheme, I would like to think that it would backfire and people still wouldn't buy the thing, but I suppose that would be too much to hope for.

Long before this rumor started, I had already made my decision that for the first time since the 16-bit days, I won't be buying all the consoles. I'm sticking with Nintendo since they release games I like to play, and I'll probably go for some sort of Steambox scenario. Zeta's right: these new boxes offer nothing new in terms of game experiences. What they really offer is making a more sophisticated set-top-box/social media experience. And I don't give a damn about that.

But this "always on" nonsense assures that in ten years, all the games you bought will be useless. Sounds like a great investment to me!

It makes me happy to no end that we still have our 8 and 16 Bit consoles around to love and enjoy. Regardless of where the video game industry heads we can all still go back to the consoles that really matter.

I agree 100%

I only touch modern Nintendo brand handhelds now a day.  I love my 3DS.

The only thing I don't like is that internet technology isn't yet there for these types of requirements.

I live in a semi-major city and everyone I know has issues with the internet intermittently cutting out.  This is a city-wide issue and it is a major problem with online gaming.

I can only imagine the kinds of issues that are experienced by people in rural areas.  I also have to assume there are a lot of people that won't be able to even play the new system.  I am thinking about my trip to Alaska where there were towns of 100s of people that had electricity, but any internet was satallite based, which wouldn't be applicable for gaming.

Sure you might only be alienating 20%-30% of potential customers, but that seems like a huge amount.  Especially because video game console manufacturers are losing customers to other tech every day, it seems like you would want to hold on to all that you can.

This is exactly why this shit isn't happening. Only someone in the %1 of the world that actually has a stable internet connection would even think this was possible. They would have to make a special version that didn't require net access for...I'm going to say at least half of their intended audience, at which point it would make way more sense to just skip the idea for a generation.

They'd *love* to do it, make no mistake, its just that they can't.

what I don't get is, who cares.

So it has to be online all the time.  If your internet is down and your life is in shambles, play something that isn't a fucking retarded rehash of the last 10 years of video games.

I mean, when my PS3 was updating the one time and installing a game, I sat and played Dreamcast.

for 6 hours.

I forgot I was even trying to play PS3.

I agree with you guys. I really do. I play current-gen stuff about 1% of the time and even then it's usually a compilation of retro games or VC. When I see Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo make bonehead decisions my instincts kick in and I speak out against it. If the industry crashes again or gaming turns 100% social I still have my games, systems and memories of when times were simpler and more exciting. This is the industry I love but it has obviously changed. Where there once was genius bedroom coders and imaginative minds like 80s era Miyamoto we now have suits that are disconnected from the rest of us. Maybe I should just let it happen and turn my back on it. It might be healthier. :)

love my retro and new gaming but if i have to be connected online just to play my games single i wont be buying the new xbox.

shame on gaming if it happens, its just a road to cut out second hand games and to charge you full retail price game downloads, there be no game collecting in future as the online services will be turned off and ll you games will go to silicon heaven.

Nice to see the general feeling is against being dictated to with new consoles, and preferring retro games anyway.

Personally I prefer gameplay anyway, which lends to retro games and systems.

Irrespectively, the internet I use at home is only ethernet as i'm not happy using wireless, and also I don't expect to have to pay inflated game prices, if I get games they tend to be second hand and cheap as most games are not worth paying good money for. Both of those factors seem to also lend to retro gaming too, given the policy for money-grabbing by the console manufacturers.

Talking of retro gaming, unrelated in a way but not really - I am expecting to release my video and pics to the world tomorrow for my Project Unity system. A retro console that can play 18 game formats, no emulation or clone hardware included, one controller, one power supply, one SCART cable...

I'll wait and see how it goes. Already dissapointed with the Wii HD + Tablet. Unless $ony and M$ can come up with some sort of virtual reality, 4D, 4K, etc I don't see how they can provide anything substancially different.

Seeing as my PS3 is used 99% of the time as a streaming device and 1% of the time as a games machine, I'm not overly concerned either way. Whenever I buy the PS4 or "XB720" (or whatever) it will probably also be used primarily as a streaming device.

Think MS would be committing suicide by eliminating used games on the system, especially if Sony allows them. I doubt they're going to prohibit them. Gamestop could just flat out refuse to carry games for the system since banning used games would be an open fuck you to their business model.

Just another reminder that the game industry of today is not the same one we fell in love with 20-30 years ago. It's big business now.

The PS3 is 100 times more reliable than early 360. Early 360 failures were horrendous, worse than any console ever by far, including the PS2 which was a pile of junk that actively pumped dust over its own DVDROM drive the entire time it ran.

I have a bit of a story about that. My little bro bought an XBOX360 at launch. After a few years, it finally red ringed. The warranty was well expired, so we sent it off to a trusted friend to take a look at it.

Low and behold, when he opened up this still officially sealed up console (complete with that holographic tape) he found tinfoil being used to connect the CPU to another component in the console.

Let me repeat that: Tinfoil in an officially sealed, never before serviced, console. The fail levels are off the charts.

Anyway, here's what I think about the whole Always-On DRM thing. I've taken a bit what others have said and added in a few things that I think about it.
