It's not something someone is "into", it's something someone "is".

I use the word "tranny" because it's funny and the word doesn't offend me like it does many others who are like me (most people who use "tranny" are referring to transvestites, of which I am not). In reality, I have a condition known as gender dysphoria. I am transgendered; body of a male, brain of a female. Always have been; just didn't know it until this year. I spent most of my life trying to fit myself into a male archetype; I stopped doing that this year though. And before anyone asks... no, I'm not into men in any way.

I'm a lesbian.

What's it like? Well, it kind of sucks, honestly. Dysphoria itself is "a state of feeling unwell or unhappy; a feeling of emotional and mental discomfort as a symptom of discontentment, restlessness, dissatisfaction, malaise, depression, anxiety or indifference". In the case of gender dysphoria, a person is unhappy with their body because it does not match how they feel on the inside. Waking up every morning and looking in the mirror to see hair on my face is horribly aggravating because I know it's not supposed to be there... never mind all the other things that aren't supposed to be there. It sucks. Fortunately, there are ways to cope with it, and ways to correct it. HRT (hormone replacement therapy) takes care of a lot of them, and then there's surgery that can take care of the rest. It's all pretty expensive to do though, which just adds to the frustration sometimes.

It's not awkward at all to me though, nor is asking about it disrespectful.

I don't openly "advertise" it, but I "came out" here because people here are cool. Like most things that are sensitive for me, I use humor and a touch of self-mockery to break the silence. I used Halloween as a way to show my true self in the open without raising too many eyebrows; people expect crazy costumes around that time. But everyone in this world is different, and there are so many people who don't understand this kind of thing and will hate on it for various reasons... nonsense that the media teaches, the ultra-simplistic gender binary we're all raised knowing, etc. This forum is full of people who are a lot more progressive than most of the outside world so I have little problem talking about it here.

That's really brave of you to share and to be so open.

The area of transgender has always fascinated me. I am currently in my Masters studying to be a therapist and I have herd stories on how difficult emotionally it is to be transgendered. To wake up everyday and feel like a woman but see the face and body of a man. That's got to be some frustrating shit every single day.

Thanks, MrFlutterPie. Yes, it is quite frustrating. I cannot stand the look of my face or my body, I despise the sound of my own voice, and I hate my given name. One of the major reasons I take on so many projects is so I can keep myself busy and distracted from it. My dysphoria goes insane if I'm not doing anything... I've gotta work, all the time, or I will go out of my fucking mind. I do voice training to change the sound of my voice and I'll be starting the process of going on HRT after I get back from MGC'14.

I wish you the best of luck on your journey as well. Professional therapy takes a very special kind of person. I salute you.

I've always wondered what things would be like if I had been born a girl, but the idea of being stuck somewhere in between...Even though I have no experience with that sort of thing, I know enough about people to know that it can't be fun in the slightest.

I appreciate that you trust us enough to share this info, Old Rover. Seeing someone deal with their issues as well as you is very inspiring to me, because I also am dealing with an issue of the brain, although it's most likely not as bad as what you go through.

You see, I have a disability called Ausperger's Syndrome (spelling might not be correct), a type of low-grade Autism. While in most respects I appear to be fairly normal, and do not suffer from most of the typical Autism symptoms, I am somewhat awkward in social situations, I have odd habits like wanting to be in motion when I get excited (rocking back and forth, walking around), and I am a bit spacey as well. I just don't think like most people do. Couple that with a bad temper as a child, and it led to me having a really rough childhood. I couldn't figure out what was expected of me. I threw a lot of fits because I didn't understand why I couldn't have my way all the time. I didn't understand how my actions affected others. Things got even worse as I grew older because more was expected of me in terms of maturity and I wasn't keeping up. I eventually just got labeled as a bad kid by a lot of adults, and was treated quite poorly by authority figures as a result. Even though I am finally starting to get things in order, it still isn't easy.

Are you making it to MGC 2014 this year? Not sure if you went last year but I know there were a few folks from here (outside of the usual MGC crew) that came and I missed hanging out with them because I was too busy managing the lightgun room. Arjak, I'm familiar with Asperger's... I don't have it myself but I've known a few people who do so I can empathize somewhat. You don't fit into the comfortable box that society has laid out for you. Simpletons get mad when a person doesn't tow the line of conformity.

jeffhlewis, I didn't make it last time (it was during my divorce; I could barely get out of bed, let alone travel) but I'm gonna try like hell to make it to the '14 show. I need to set aside about $1500 for it, so I can get the airline tickets and hotel and etc.
