10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

QuoteThe fighting in China Warrior isn't your straight up "just punch til you win" variety.   However, most nubs just turn on the auto-fire and wonder why infinite punching doesn't make them win.   These are the same people who play Bonk and spin across every level.

...

Your comments strike me as the type of opinion that doesn't like a game that's a bit brutal on the surface, but once you learn how the game works, it's easy.
I concur. China Warrior (and Vigilante, as I have long-argued) should never be played with auto-fire.  IMG

Comrade Falcon, after reading your responses, it is quite clear that you haven't really given China Warrior a chance.

Or, more precisely, you are determined not to give it a chance. This is your prerogative, but your assertions are trite and your evidence is weak.

Perhaps you thought I was flippant when I asked you to open...

Your mind,

Your heart, and

Your soul

...to a greatly misunderstood game.

I am not asking you to enjoy the game. Nor am I asking you to praise the game.

Rather, allow yourself to analyze this game from a different framework (a different set of assumptions).

I believe you will (grudgingly) acknowledge that China Warrior is fundamentally a proto-rhythm game that is dressed in the aesthetics of another genre(s). If it makes it more palatable, think of it this way: China Warrior exists in the borderlands of two or more genres, but you insist on pigeon-holing it.

However, you conveniently ignore the points I made in my post, opting instead to blather with Arkhan's more inflammatory/tangential posts.

Let's stick to the heart of the matter: China Warrior, the proto-rhythm game.

This "max-level forum psycho" () destroyed TWO PC Engine groups in rage: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook "Because Chris 'Shadowland' Runyon!," then the other by Aaron Nanto "Because Le NightWolve!" Him and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together... Both times he blamed the Aarons in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner, never himself nor his deranged, destructive, toxic turbo troll gang!

I remember when Parappa came out and I said "so it is like China Warrior?"

I coined the phrase.  Truth.

CrackTiger

QuoteGladiator?  I don't know that game.
We get it: you don't get it. There's no need to continue comparing a game to other random genres. You may think that Super Mario RPG is a terrible fishing game and you can cite a laundry list of features from various fishing games. But all it means in the end is that you don't get RPGs.

All those beat 'em ups you're going on about completely fail as Gladiator-style games and hardly have any hurricane-of-trash gameplay. If you want to criticize China Warrior, why not complain about the lack of opponent stripping and one-hit kills?

Justin the Not-So-Cheery Black/Hack/CrackTiger helped Joshua Jackass, Andrew/Arkhan Dildovich and the DildoPhiles destroy 2 PC Engine groups: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook, then the other by Aaron Nanto!!! Both times he blamed the Aarons and their staff in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner, never himself nor his deranged/destructive/doxxing toxic turbo troll gang which he covers up for under the "community" euphemism!

I always felt it could use more music, honestly... the tiny handful of tracks are nice but more would have been nicer.

Absolutely. Thank god the tracks we have are very nice, though, and fit the game quite well.

Hey, I found my two cents today. I have never been a huge fan of China Warrior. Had it briefly back in the day traded it off to a friend.

After this recent discussion I went back and gave it a try. Well, its still not my favorite. I DO love the HUGE sprites. I love the fact that it oozes charm, cheesy charm in my opinion but, charm non the less.

What I really liked is that none of the game mechanics in the game are wasted. There is a reason to punch, there is a reason to kick, duck, jump.... all things serve a purpose. That is an under appreciated aspect of this game that rarely comes up in discussions.

Also, people don't like the memorization aspect of the gameplay. Personally, I would take a game of memorization over being led by the hand or having to depend on jump that is on the VERY EDGE of the characters jump distance as artificial challenge.

While still not my favorite, its mechanics and charm are underrated making it a far better game than it gets credit for.

Also, I would play this game over getting kicked in the crotch. In fact, Im gonna do that.... play the game that is
A dark tide will rise and she will walk again. He is coming.....

Meh, the bosses are easy if you know what you're doing. The grunts in the first region are so freakin' simplistic. The first one is total cheese for punches and the second one is kick fodder. The corny bitches in the second part are suckers for punches. The Mantis fist boss is a total sucker for high/low punch combos. The drunken master can be disposed of with either kick-traps or with the "Game Of Death" jump kick. The only punks who are a real threat are the clones, and even they can be wiped out relatively fast by mastering the timing of Wang's flurry punch. Yeah... motherfucker's name is Wang.

I can spam everyone easily except the clones and Drunken Master final boss...but this is totally lame. The boss fights should be genuinely satisfying (pinning a boss in the corner and spamming moves is LAME and shouldn't be possible).

This is like spamming bombs on a boss in a shoot-em-up instead of employing a thoughtful strategy + precision maneuvering to take down the bastard.

I don't like when a brainless strategy is rewarded and allows progress.

Now, for the record, I can beat most bosses in China Warrior without mashing buttons brainlessly, but this is self-imposed discipline.

The boss encounters in China Warrior, IMHO, warrants legitimate criticism. :pcgs:

I got to bump this. i really do.

This game is the ultimate and for Arkhan and esteban further cementing this fact proves that it is a game worth owning. i haven't beaten this game but i can tell you i've gotten to the drunken master ONCE and got my ass handed to me.
stacking that life is really where it is at. if it wasn't for that incredible music, excellent graphics, and control it would never leave the shelf forever in the bindings of the case.

I must immediately hug you and welcome you to the small cadre of folks who Understand the Truth.

Personally, I get my a$$ handed to me 70% of the time with Drunken Master. I really don't have a great strategy (It's a war or attrition, where I can win as long as I have enough life in reserve).

30% of the time, I just get lucky where I get a few hits in before Drunken Master chops away an entire bar of life (or two) before I can successfully land a hit or two.

I am pretty sure Old_Rover has a real strategy for dealing with DM, but I am happy with my reckless, ridiculous method. IT MAKES FOR A NAIL-BITING, SUPER-STRESSFUL FINAL BOSS ENCOUNTER. It is a primal ALL-OR-NOTHING, high-stakes moment that is missing from so many games (to work through an entire game, simply to lose to the final boss, is classic formula for TRAGEDY, which I'm a sucker for).

Maybe, one day, I'll actually figure it out...but I've been playing this game for a long time and I just revert to "auto-pilot" PANIC MODE...

I do agree that there are other titles worth playing before checking this one out, however, this game will always hold a special place within my heart. It was the 1st game I received, played, & beat on the system. My brothers and I received Vigilante, the legendary axe, blazing Lazers, dungeon explorer and this one for Xmas one yr.

This reminds me that I need to try to beat this one again.

It's a showcase title, not a very good one, but it has some interesting stuff, rather take it than a kick to the beans....
