@GTV reviews the Cosmic Fantasy 1-2 Switch collection by Edia, provides examples of the poor English editing/localization work. It's much worse for CF1. Rated "D" for disappointment, finding that TurboGrafx CF2 is better & while CF1's the real draw, Edia screwed it up...

This actually made me laugh. That's PAL Megaman 2.

Keranu

I've seen this one before too, and yes it's hilarious  .

I've never seen that before. I actually like it better than the U.S. box art. The PAL art reminds me of "classic" sci-fi illustrations from back in the day (40's). The metallic bowling pin -- uhhh, I mean arm blaster -- is totally silly , though.

I've had Mega Man 2 (PAL), it is ugly but nothing beats the US Mega Man 1. Nothing.

The background is crappy, but the foreground picture of Megaman looks fine to me. As stevek666 said, it looks vaguely like a classic sci-fi illustration, a style I am very fond of. I wish more Western boxes used painted covers. It used to be fairly common back in the 80s for console (especially Atari games) and home computer products to have painted covers. Some of the Atari cover art is outstanding.

And no one is going to comment on this!? Absolutely splendid! I love it! It is actually pretty neat (I'd love to have it framed -- no I'm not kidding) for it's straightforward aesthetics. It certainly has a charm to it (though the ape's face is pretty horrid).

A long, long time ago, I was inspired to scan these bad boys:

Exhibit 1: Capture the Beast (VIC-20)

Exhibit 2: Vic Trek (VIC-20)

EDIT: RetroFlashback -> https://web.archive.org/web/20041106144430if_/http://home.comcast.net/~bkrawczuk/chooseyourpleasure.html

I have never had the heart to open these babies up (plus, I don't have a working tape drive for the VIC-20)... but I absolutely love them, particularly Capture the Beast. As you can see, they were from a no-budget software house (probably two brothers in a basement) and they released a bunch of games. I used to have Capture the Beast framed in my office. One day, if I am fortunate enough, I will meet the artist. It probably was a friend of the developers.

Please don't tell me that's.......Donkey Kong.

That was almost like guessing what game it was through hieroglyphics.

I actually kinda like it though. They got Wily, Fire Man, Elec Man and Guts man right.

Zombie Tennis, Burger Time and Taffy Turner are gold, pure gold! I love 'em. Does Zombie Tennis really look that bad --- or is it a result of scanning / optimizing the original?
IMGIMG IMG  |  IMG  |  IMG IMG

It really isn't called Zombie Tennis, it's the scanning and optimization that gave the man a zombie like appearance.

I've seen multiple images of the Zombie Tennis cover and that guy is green on all of 'em.

On the MM2 box, why is Dr. Light pointing at Mega Man, & instructing Crashman to attack him?!?   Man, there was seriously some bad art out there.  The original Dungeon Explorer's is one of my favorites, I could of done a better job!  It's like a 5 year drew it!

Hey Tron, I'm happy to tell you that I have a PUNKSHOT marquee :). I have tons of marquees, but PUNKSHOT is gonna be one of the first ones I slip into the arcade cabinet I'm building :).

I actually played that silly game a lot in the arcade with my friends. We had stupid fun with it.

Heh SNK make a good point, except most of the early Neo games were a bit on the rubbish side (a few exceptions of course) and few people coul afford 'em. Pity really, the hardware is fantastic.

Keranu

The hot dog ad, another classic. By the way, I love the earlier Neo Geo games, in fact I prefer them to the newer ones to the most part (especially ever since Playmore was on board). Magician Lord, League Bowling, Windjammers... all incredibly fun stuff  8) .
