Hello guys! I have been a fan of older games and systems for over 20 years. Just happy to be here and would like to learn more about TurboGrafx 16. I have the system with around a dozen games. I been mostly NES, SNES, Genesis guy, but its good to change it up a bit and now my primary focus is playing the TurboGrafx. Well anyways, enuff with the boring stuff. Thanks again and I'm happy to be around.

Oh hi! Thank you guys! name is Tom. I have pretty much every retro system, aside from the very expensive ones like NEOGeo or TurboDuo or any of those other "high end" systems of the 90's. My preferred system is Genesis, TurboGrafx 16 and SNES because my favorite are 16 bit systems. I also have a TurboExpress, Game Boy and Game Gear. I don't really have a preferred genre. I just like to play games within my skill level and fun factor.

Thanks for welcoming me guys. I would love a CD system but the prices are too high. I don't think I can spend more than $200 for any system. I checked ebay and I was shocked to see how ridiculous some of the prices on retro games and systems are :( I'm glad I didn't junk all of my old stuff and very happy I rescued it from my parents house many years after I moved out. So gonna just sit back and enjoy some of my old games.

Welcome to the things.

Tell us more about yourself, are you a fan of making out with strangers?

Welcome, comrade.

I know a lot of folks here are into the post-16-bit consoles (and I'll spend more time with them eventually), but I've been very happy exploring the cast libraries of 8-/16-bit consoles of my youth.

I work in NYC, commute from northern Jersey. This is the best part of the country, and everyone else here knows it.

I lived in Edgewater NJ for a year and worked in Manhattan.  Small world.

Alt-Nintega

I love Edgewater! Predominantly Japanese population and since I love all things Japanese I hang out quite often there, especially the Mitsuwa market. It sucks that they closed down the GameStop there. That place used to sell a lot of retro-games.

what is cheaper? Turbo CD or Turbo DUO? Do they both play all US CD games?

Cd attachment WAS cheaper but for some silly reason it is nearing Duo prices it seems...

Second question is no.....

With a 3.0 turbo chip you can play MOST cd games except for supergrafix games which there is only four or so games and it was a Japanies only system.

The turbo duo has the 3.0 Hu card built in but it capacitors will need to npbeing replaced as they go bad after 20 something years which cause the audio to cut out

Some games require a arcade card which you cant have plugged in a cd attachment because then the 3.0 card would be missing and you need both.

All cd based games can play on a us or Japan duo or cd attachment import cd games to.

So in the end it is less of a question of which is cheapest and which system works best for the games you plan to play.

They both have their ups and charm.

Easiest solution?

Get a Pc Engine duo R and get it modded for higher video and audio out along with a region mod to play either TG-16 or pc engine Hu cards/turbo chips.

Then you can play the cd games that require the arcade card any cd based game and nearly All The Hu card games minus the supergrafix games.

TheClash603

All the advice you just received was pretty good, but I will simplfy things...  If you only intend to play US games, get a US Duo.  This system can play every game ever released in the US without any additional hardware/software.  If you decide to venture into JP games, you can play most every CD game with this system too, just not JP Hu Cards.

The Japanese hardware can be cheaper, but will require modding or a converter to play all US games.  A standard US CD unit requires a 3.0 card to play a lot of the US CD games (this is built in on a Duo), and this card is expensive.

Just be warned, all these old systems are prone to failure, but there are many good repairmen on the site.

Alt-Nintega

Thank you for the advice and explanations guys. At least now I have an idea of how the whole CD thing works. I still don't get why does standard CD unit need a card. They could have bypassed that, it useless imo. Also great to know that Japanese CD games can be played on a US Duo. Just small question, can you play Japanese CD games on a Standard CD unit?

Yes youncan

But there was various versons of that card to play said game. Easyest solution is to buy the 3.0 card as it is the most all inclusive one to play cd games minus ones meeding the arcade card.

It is also the most expensive

Alternitive soltuion would be to buy an everdrive hu card as it is priced at about the same price of a 3.0 card. This will allow you to play all hu card games and if you can find the rom for the 3.0 card it could act as a solution for cd games.

Mind you I am talking out of my butt on that part as I am unsure if that has been done could be done or is done before.

Might want to fact check that part

Wrong.  The Arcade Card Pro is for the original CD add-ons and includes the additional ram found in the 3.0 card.

This is only true in select cases.  You can use the flashcart to emulate a 2.0 or a 3.0 card (to see error screens or use the other region's card), but only on a system that has the ram built in (Duo, Super CD add-on, or LA pac).  It will not work for Arcade Cards or on an original CD add-on.

And this is why it is good to fact check it lol

Thanks for the corrections

Pcefx.com has a nice chart showing the differences in hardware and the CD vs SCD vs ACD formats

CD•ROM2 = CD = 1.0-2.0

Super CD•ROM2  = SCD = 3.0

Arcade CD = ACD

The 1.0 was short lived and soon replaced by the nearly identical 2.0 card.  Outside of Altered Beast requiring a 1.0 card (it'll glitch out on anything else), to the end user there's no functional difference between the two cards.

I think 2.0 added the on-screen UI for playing audio CD's...
