I saw this on the news this morning. Not video game related, but, it does relate to collecting things.

There's a good blurb in the article, about how a book dealer gave the thief $300 for 7 books that had a value of $4,750.

.
Sounds like a chronic thief due to her past history. And she has money? I also noticed that blurb about the book dealer transaction for $300.00 ; doesn't surprise me though.

could so see this happaning to a video game collector.

That being a neighbor stealing a chunk of a collection "valued" at x amount and selling it on craigslist or such for pennys on the dollar.

"Wimmel, who lives in a $1 million two-story brick home next-door."

"Over the course of a year, police say Wimmel stole some of Jordan's most prized possessions"

"With the help of a court subpoena, investigators traced eBay user profile "chrisieanne2010" to Wimmel. According to documents filed in Montgomery County District Court, eBay's transaction history revealed Wimmel sold dozens of Jordan's books between Aug. 2013 and Jan. 2014, netting hundreds-of-dollars in turn."

"Second Story Books in Rockville. Owner Allen Stypeck told police Wimmel had walked into his shop with seven books in April. Stypeck paid Wimmel $300 for the antique publications worth an estimated $4,275."

Wow...

so not only did this person "living in a 1 mil house? REALLY?" stoled from a "friend" and neighbor with health issues, and alling parents, but she took the books to a local bock store sold them for chump change, then I am guessing based on the dates this was all laid out on figured f that I am going to ebay these books....

I hope she gets more then a slap on the wrist, but seeing how the estemated value of the books is several thousand this is a federal matter.....whcih I think transcends a simple civial one.

"Although police have recovered about a quarter of the stolen books, Jordan fears the rest are gone for good"

It is good the police where able to help recover SOME of the books, mostly through ebay I would asume.  Researching the past history of who bought what.....

I do wonder as I simply do not know the answers ....

1)  Do the people who bought the stolen books have a legal oblication to return the books to the original owner?

-If they do will they be rembursed the cost that they paid for the book by the theif?

2)  Did the original owner have any home owner's insurance to cover the loss of these books?  I know money would not replace a person's collection but I would imagine it would "hurt" alot less when you try and recover some of your stuff.  I would think she would need some sort of invatory of what she had, it's value, proof it is among the lost/stolen goods, and a home owner's insurance that covers theft, and damage (like a house fire).  BUT since she moved in with her parents to help take care of them I doubt it.

In the video they show the room that contained the collection, but not the other books that were in there. So, the collector has relocated her books. At first I wondered how books could have left without her knowing, then again, if she had bookcases upon bookcases of books, it might take a while for a few going missing every so often to become noticeable. That is until someone else notices your stuff on ebay, or start questioning where things are going, are you misplacing them, or...  It also wasn't too long before someone noticed, it was months, not years.

I think some more of the books will turn up. Still, a horrible thing to do, especially when your family is already well off.

Damn, that sucks.  I only have to worry about my wife going crazy on my some day for all this junk in the house and just up and hauling it to the thrift store.
