Quote from: munchiaz on 11/03/2014, 04:11 PMI currently have renters insurance. I have been looking into it, and since i would consider my games a "collection" I'm going to have to look into a "rider" or "floater' for my games. Anyone have any experience in this. I created a sort of itemized list of all my games and consoles when i moved into my new place 4-5 months ago. But this list does not have prices, just the list of games, and pictures. So I'm guessing i need to price out all this stuff as well

Edit:
So i just got off the phone with my renters insurance company. Looks like if i want to get something like a rider on my video game collection i would have to get it professional appraised. I have no idea if there is even a professional video game appraiser company out there. I do know that the with my type of insurance i should be fine if something were to happen. I have a itemized list and pictures of my collection. I don't need to, but it would help if i had a list of what i value these games at.

Hopefully this info helps someone out there
This is an issue that I've wondered about for a long time - I'm fairly certain that most collectible items would need an appraisal to be considered worth more than a buck or two a piece for insurance purposes, especially when it comes to retro gaming stuff and the like. We all know what things are worth on the market but to an insurance company, it's just a bunch of old toys no one cares about anymore.

That being said - if you rent a place, get renter's insurance. It's so cheap it's a no-brainer. Most big outfits will give you mid to high 5-figure total replacement for like $15-20 a month or less.
Yeah the whole appraised value stuff is hard to get for something like games. I know i pay about $16 a month, and i have over 20k of coverage on my stuff. From what the agent told me i can get my stuff replaced for items in the same or like condition, and if that means buying it off ebay then they would cover that cost to get the item

I like the cut of your jib.
Risky Business to possibly meet up with the thief to buy your stuff back... ;)

So, I've been away for a few weeks and only now decided to look at this thread again... I too had Necro's reaction...

OK, so neut, you don't like banks and you actually kept serious cash at your place which was also stolen ?? Money is good as long as someone else on the receiving end is willing to trade you for it. A bank account is protected by the FDIC up to $250,000, so unless you're seriously worried about a coming revolution or the zombie apocalypse, your money would've been safe there... Checking accounts are free with a minimum balance, like my bank is $600, so yeah, if it's under that you get fees. Some banks like TCF are fully free. There's healthy paranoia and then there's excess like yours (at least, it sounds like it) - sorry to be a bit critical here while you're down... If only you had been paranoid about security though and loaded up on screeching alarms like sparky there...

One thing that's good to hear is the police there actually dusted for fingerprints. Here in Chicago you need dead bodies at the scene for that to happen. I had a renter who was broken into, we called the cops, they came, asked if we wanted to file a report, the end. Some years later, my garage door got open, they stole my new 24 foot ladder, $169 value, busted my car's window, stole my toolbox. I had a temp construction job at the time, so I left many tools in my car. Called cops, showed them the busted Mexican beer bottle where the window was broken, looked like what they used, I hoped something would be dusted, but nope... That concluded the "investigation."

Fact is, if your shit gets stolen, you're likely not ever getting it back if the thief/thieves escape the scene, sorry to say... Same deal with my renter, she asked me if I want I can file a report, I said of course, I got a card of it, she left, bye bye, and it took damn near $600 at Menards to replace my usual tool set... I lost tools I had since 17, and couldn't exactly remember what I had in the toolbox... I dunno if I ever replaced everything I had, but I guess I recovered over time... It's really a devastating feeling, bottomline, and it sucks you'll likely never get justice...

I had a thief break in a long time ago and steal stuff like my Dreamcast and my PS2.  They actually caught the guy and I got most of my stuff back.  He got caught trying to sell some coins he stole to a group of firemen at a fire station.  There was another guy they suspected but could not connect to the thief until after I got my PS2 back and the moron played Gran Turismo on the stolen PS2 and put his full name in and saved it.  I never got my Dreamcast back though....

Wow, how dumb can you be to show up at a firestation to sell stolen goods. They deal with cops all the time when fires break out and probably are buds with many... Lucky you, he wasn't as smart as he thought. What exactly is needed for them to give a damn enough to dust for prints though ?? They didn't give a f--k in my 2 cases as mentioned...

Dang, dude. Just reading this. Hope the police can find some fingerprints or something. Really sorry about your collection.
