Anyone know how much space there is inside of one of these guys?
IMG
Looking at picking one up and would like to do an RGB changeover, if there is room...  I can't seem to find any pictures of the insides of these.

BlueBMW

Theres plenty of room and its easy to tap the rgb at the expansion connector.   Swap out the din5 for a din8 jack and youre good!

Great, thanks!
I have seen how crowded it is inside the white units and assumed there was lots more space inside this thing, but better to be sure!

Out of curiosity, what are those going for out west? Here in Japan they usually clap around $300.

Clap.
If you had to get clap to own one, at least you would know who the true fans were.

That's a steep price. I guess a little antibiotics would fix you right up. Would we be require to keep said clap as long as we wanted to keep the CD ROM?

300 is about what I've seen at the top. Usually they sell for less. This particular model is a lot harder (for me) to find. I have a grey/orange core unif and I just can't match it with a briefcase.

Opethian

you could probably find one cheap with sound issues. the caps die in those and eventually  suffocate the audio on the DIN.

pdiggitydogg

I paid 150 for it, just the bare unit. Probably over paid...
Would anyone know the size of the ac adapter plug so I can make one?

Opethian

its 12V 1A do you need the barrel size?

BlueBMW

I think it can use the same adapter as a Turbo / PC Engine Duo

Yep, it's the same adapter as the turbo/pce duo's.
Turbo fan since 1991 after owning my first system.

Thanks again!
I'll do some digging and see what size it is exactly and snag some connectors from digikey or somewhere similar

Edit
Does OD 6.3mm. ID 3.0mm sound right?
I know the pce plug is a fairly common 5.5mm...and I think 2.1mm id

Ok, Im having some confusion regarding the polarity of the adapter.  Some sources say center negative and some say center positive.  Which is it?

I use a Sega mk-1602 psu for my PCE and I know that it is center negative.  I would assume the same would be true for the CDRom2...
Also, some sources say the voltage is only 10v instead of 12?  I really assume 12 is correct, since my Sega adapter measures at 13v (but labelled 9v)
Im going to go the radio shack psu route on this.  12v 1000mA, since thats the closest I can find at a reasonable price.  I would get an NEC adapter if I could find one that didn't come from China.

BlueBMW

The voltage isn't as critical really.  I think factory is 10v, but 9v - 12v should work fine.  It all gets down regulated inside the unit anyways.  The key is amperage.  I want to say 1000mA would be the minimum you could get by with.  1200mA would probably be better if available.

As far as the tip.  The universal tip is "Q" from radio shack.  And it needs to be set to center positve.  I think the dimensions were 6.3mm OD and 3.0mm ID.

pdiggitydogg

That's weird... To switch from center negative on the main console, to center positive on an accessory.
I can't seem to find any ends that match up, other than the adaptaplug stuff at RadioShack...so I guess I'm in the market for a CD to pce jumper...

BlueBMW

I thought retrogamecave or someone made some reproduction jumper plugs for the super cdrom2.   Someone made some... Just cant remember who.

I think they just wanted to use the same power supply as the Duo systems.

NecroPhile

You can get one from gamedoctorhk on ebay, but I can't vouch for the quality and $13.50 shipped seems kinda spendy for lil cable.

schweaty

looking right at my OEM adapter and it says 12V 1000ma center positive.  i have had to repair it a couple of times too.  the barrel is an awkward size.

pdiggitydogg

I really appreciate the double check on the center pin.  Not that I distrust info...it just seems weird.  I had not thought of them just matching the Duo and using current stocked adapters.

I was looking at just getting the jumper from gamedoctorHK.  It is kind of a steep price, but if I bundle it with their cap kit (just in case) it wont feel so bad...I guess...
I read a lot of people just using the Japanese adapters, but I can't get on board with that easily.

thesteve

the jumper is only an option really, as you can supply the PCE from its supply

pdiggitydogg

I guess I never thought of that...

pdiggitydogg

Well I got some parts in and have the SCDR2 up and running - played some Rondo today (first time - it was great!)
But I've decided I can't live with using 2 ac adapters.  This isn't a Sega CD...

I have tried a bunch of different adapters that I have, throughout the house, and none fit the jumper adapter jack.  I even thought to try the Express/GT adapter...but nope, that's too small.
It's a weird size, in between the SCDR2/Duo main jack and the PCE jack.

Keith Courage

Are you talking about the dongle that goes from the super cd rom to the pc engine? If so I can make you one.

pdiggitydogg

The small jumper cable, yeah. Thanks, but I can make one I just need to know the size to look for. I already have the PCE barrel end and some cable.
If you don't have a size, maybe a part number at a place like parts express or digikey? If neither, I can schlep it to Radio Shack and try to figure it out from their adaptaplug set...but that sounds like tedious work!

Keith Courage

The smaller size is the same for a DUO-R I believe. It is either 1.5mm or 1.7mm. I don't remember which for sure. Maybe someone else can chime in. It is slightly smaller than the plug on a DUO-R

pdiggitydogg

Aha! Duo r...
I found: Connector inner diameter is 1.7mm
Connector outer diameter is 4.75mm
Center +
Thank you!

pdiggitydogg

NOPE! That isn't the right size either.
The PsOne uses the same barrel as the duo r and that plug doesn't fit either.
At this point I'm thinking I'm SOL and will have to spend $15 on this from HK :(
Keith, if you can guarantee 101% you have the right adapter end, will you just sell me that?

pdiggitydogg

For those interested, I found a barrel that fits - hacked off the adapter for a vtech telephone. Bye bye Sega cd-esque power adapter problems!

pdiggitydogg

Its also severely overpriced. Barrel ends are less than $2. It would cost under $5 to make one, even less in bulk.

ClodBusted

I'd say it is still affordable for those who lack soldering skills or do not want to invest in the separate components, tools and time to make their own cables.

pdiggitydogg

Yes, you are right there.
For those, however, I'd suggest contacting Keith here and have a cable made by a community member for less.
