Bought one of these bad boys a few weeks back, as I put my game room together slowly.  I seem to remember some here stating differences between the models, mainly sound issues??   I chose the model 2 set-up for a couple reasons, but mainly due to price and reliability.  Anyway, any Sega nuts here care to inform me of the major differences between the models, if any?  The searches I have done online, really have not told me much, other than the model 2 has stereo built into the A/V port already.  Thanks guys.

Can someone program a spambot to infect every other thread so Nullnutz can go on vacation for a while?  [-o<

Bernie, the model 2 CD supposedly has the best sound output.  I think there was also a bios update during the model 2's life span.  I can tell you that from personal experience the model 2 I saved from Goodwill sounds a heck of a lot better than my CDX does.  Enjoy!  What games are you going after first?

From what I have read the Model 1 Sega CD has the best sound output.  Of course the Sega Genesis Model 1 Launch Model had the best sound as well.  I always recommend a model 1 combo but a working model 1 is hard to come by.  I have one and keep a model 2 around just in case.

On the Genesis side, bust3d's link has all the info you need.  In most cases, the Model 1 Genesis units have the best audio by default.  However, there are now homebrew chips like the CCAM and the MegaAmp which will make any model 2 Genesis sound better than ever.

On the SegaCD side, audio is exactly the same in my experience.  I've got multiples of both types and was always happy out of the audio of either (I use the AV jacks out of the back).

My personal daily play setup is an early non-TMSS Model 1 Genesis, Model 2 Sega CD, and 32X to remove composite jailbars (plus then you can play 32X games).

Nice guide, thanks for sharing. Too bad all those pictures were hosted by ImageFuck.

The sega-16 link has the information, it's too bad the images are gone now.

The rule of thumb is model 1 has the best picture and audio, model 2 can be ok but are mostly "bad." The Sega CD has its own audio encoder so it solves that problem, and you can use a 32x, which has its own superior video encoder, to solve the video issue if any.

I have three model 2s, and the "best" one has scratchy audio and the video has a faint "grid" pattern to the display. I do all my Genesis gaming on a model 1, non-TMSS. Its only problem is the common "rainbow banding" issue that comes with aged caps in the system, but it's hardly noticeable.

I would also recommend buying one of those after market power cords that allow you to power the genesis and cd without needing those high brick power cords for each system component.
