My nerd rant for the day: G1 Ironhide...

Is one of the shittiest transformers there is, and a pretty crappy toy in general.  I mean.  Look at this piece...

...okay well, I can't upload a photo because my phone won't let me update fapatalk, but just google that shit & prepare for the worst, if you haven't seen it already.

Seriously though.  It doesn't even look like he does in the cartoon, which would be forgivable if the toy itself wasn't complete garbage, and if most of the other OG Autobots didn't look much better by comparison.  Sure, liberties had to be taken to make the Diaclone mechs seem more dynamic for the show, but most characters resemble their toys very well.  Hell, even Jazz/Meister's toy has a friggin smirk!

And what do we get with Ironhide?  Well, you get a gangly robot with a derpy face hidden behind a windscreen, and a little "base" with a missile launcher (which doesn't work on mine, btw) and a bunch of other detachable pieces that are mostly pointless beyond being prone to getting lost.  All this comes together to form what I thought at first to be a pretty respectable Onebox van replica, but the joint lines kind of ruin the look.  So, why would they make the alt mode break up into so many pieces?  They very easily could have pulled off getting just a robot out of the van, without the silly battle base.  None of the other Diaclones do this.  Shit, even Motormaster manages to get a robot, albeit a blocky one, out of a semi truck WITH trailer? What's your excuse, Ironhide?

So what were Takara(?) thinking when they made this pile of Diacrap?  All the other Diaclones/Micro Change figures look pretty proportionate for the most part, even the triple changers, but not this guy. 

Perhaps the worst thing is that we have yet to have a decent Ironhide toy in his G1 likeness.  I have the Universe Classics version, and it came so very close, but that figure is a whole other ball park of fuckupery.  There've been some decent third-party attempts at a respectable figure, but those are a bit too cost-prohibitive for me.

Look, I'm 23 years old.  I wasn't around when these toys were new, so I don't get that "wow" factor that I'm sure some of you had in your youth over these...but I couldn't imagine being anything but disappointed in this toy, even if you hadn't already seen the show. 

Therefore, I'm removing Ironhide from my G1 Transformers shelf.  He's just too out of place amongst all the other better Autobots. 

Does anyone here feel the same?  I can't be the only one...Ironhide's shittiness is so legendary there ought to be memes about it. Anyway, there's my rant.

There is a kit you can get to give Ironhide and Ratchet normal looking heads. It does make them look better when in robot mode. Otherwise, either way it goes I was fine with that toy. Yeah does look nothing like the cartoon when transformed, but still was a interesting toy to me none the less.

I misread the thread title and thought this was going to be about an old Raymond Burr tv show, and I can't decide if I'm happy or disappointed that it's not.

I was a Transformers kid (in fact I still have all of my Transformers from the 80s), and I always thought the Ironhide toy looked dumb. So you're right.

There is a kit you can get to give Ironhide and Ratchet normal looking heads. It does make them look better when in robot mode.

There are a couple different ones; one that adds just the head, and one with head and arms.  I'd like to have the latter, but I can't seem to find one anywhere & I'm not sure it's worth $60, especially since I don't have both Ironhide & Ratchet.

I'm sure Takara has an MP version of Ironhide in the works that'll knock yer socks off, though, when/if Hasbro brings him out is a different story.  The most recent is Prowl, which I have, but when are we going to get Smokescreen & Bluestreak by now, not to mention Sideswipe & Red Alert?  Plus, Bumblebee & Wheeljack are coming soon(along with Star Convoy, which I can do without for the mostpart).  Oh, & it'd be nice to have Ratbat, but, that probably won't happen unless they bring out SoundBlaster....of which I have no interest in.

Bumblebee and Wheeljack are already out, if I'm not mistaken.  I've been considering getting Bumblebee for quite awhile, but $70 for an all-plastic toy the size of a $16 deluxe...

I've been thinking of getting KOs of Jack & the Fairladies (good name for a band, no?) as they're only about $30-$40 a pop & are of pretty good quality.

MP Ironhide?  That would be the tits, except I wonder how much they'll charge for a figure his size, assuming he's to scale with the other 'bots.  Is the vanette much larger than a fairlady or lancia?  I know it's pretty small by van standards (vandards?)
