In case it helps anyone with setting it up, I learned that there can only be a maximum of 25 pages in each folder directory, so at least in my case I was able to split up a GoodPCE archive as follows:

A-E
F-N
O-S
T-Z

Having a lot of fun with this so far. Is there a comprehensive list anywhere of fan-translated HuCard projects available anywhere?

Protips:

1) First make sure the region switch is where it's supposed to be, either PCE or TG-16. Mine was set to PCE, and when I tried to boot it on my US TurboExpress I got just a black screen... I forgot all about the region issue and I wound up reinserting it a few times at first thinking I got a bad one...

2) Download the BIOS (as it will instruct you upon startup), unzip the folder "TBED" and save it to the root of of your microSD card.

http://krikzz.com/pub/support/index.php?dir=turbo-ed-v2%2Fos
http://krikzz.com/pub/support/turbo-ed-v2/os/turbo-os-v1.zip

3) Fetch your ROM collection of course, copy to root, or you can PM Bernie, me, etc. for a link to a full one prepared by Bernie some time back.

Well, mine seems to be in working order. Only a 7 week wait between the time I paid and received it. ;) Anyhow, enjoy!

SephirothTNH

I got mine today as well.  Thanks Jtucci!

Anyone know if you can use the same sd card for multiple everdrives.  It seems like it should work no problem.  Anyone tried?

I have this same problem.  If it won't fit in the mailbox they just put a slip in there and I have to drive up to the post office.

Yeah, I guess you could but not worth it. They're cheap enough and ejecting/inserting all the time on a PCB like that is extra wear/stress each time, so not worth it if you ask me. One cheap 1GB microSD ($1-$3 bucks) here is all you need and just made dedicated for this Everdrive.

QuoteIf it won't fit in the mailbox they just put a slip in there and I have to drive up to the post office.
Yeah, I've had to drive over a few times this year, last was for my new 5.5" Android phone. Once this happens, signing the paper for a redelivery just seems like another set up for a missed delivery all over again. Looks like it's part laziness on their part, trying to save on workload, etc.

Mine arrived this morning, woohoo thanks so much jtucci! I am going to try and load it up and test it today :)

I need to get in touch with some home brew devs now, and see if I can get a good testing setup to look at art on the system using this usb port :)

Thanks again - beyond excited!

Update:

Works great on my Turbokon region modded duo-r! I don't want to take my turbo out and test on that, but this serves the purpose I need for sure! I tried a few roms, and they play exactly like my official retail games. This is really the closest thing to real without breaking the bank - as my first Everdrive / rom loader experience - super impressed!

Pokun

There's just one small little thing that's driving me absolutely crazy. I- and II-button functions are swapped in the menu! ](*,) What's the deal with that? Every single PC Engine game I played uses II-button for cancel (except when a mouse is detected in some games) but Krikzz just had to go and do everything backwards.

The Famicom Everdrive is also like this but at least it has an option to swap the swapped functions of A- and B-buttons to the standard layout again.

BigusSchmuck

Hey got mine yesterday, thanks a lot for doing this! Now to play some fan translated games on my Duo. :)

My friend at work got a TED recently and it looks like it's DOA.   He says some others from that batch are tardy too.

GOOD LUCK GUYS.

I doubt that.  It actually says "OS file not found" if you try to use it without os.pce in the TBED folder.

Tell him to make sure he switched the PCE-TG16 switch appropriately... I fell for it myself... It was on PCE from the factory, I have a US Express, so when I loaded up my SD, I got nothing but a black screen... I kept removing it, blowing on my Express, a few times before I finally remembered that shit... If I can fall for that, anyone can. Also, links/info again:

That seems to be his issue.  But, that seems kinda lame.  The GameOfYou card works fine with those don't it?

and he's got a pro as fuck DD region mod.

His things worked for me, but I don't have region mods.

NightWolve

Ah, so it was the region mod. You could try to change the voltage supply source. Solder a wire directly to the 5V regulator output leg to get the maximum power and send it to the region mod circuit if it currently taps voltage from the video output area. That helps for some cases, if not, that particular region mod implementation is just not agreeable with TE.

wilykat

I thought the issue were related to those that used electronic switches and the timing at power on could be causing issue? That is the 8 data busses weren't set when TE tried to perform function with the console?

Mechanical 8 pole switch doesn't seem to cause the issue. They don't draw any power other than some extra wires requiring an additional milliamp or 2 to go through

Renmauzo

Just got mine in today, and it works perfectly. Thanks to all the guys that posted up tutorial steps and tech help, ended up making the setup really easy.

...and of course, thank you so much jtucci for setting this up and taking care of everything; it's been a pleasure to be included in the buy!

Yeah, there are a few region mod styles/circuits, but the one that needs a 5 Volt supply is the one that I'm thinking of. Problems with other types of flashcarts were solved when tapping the voltage from the best source, right from the output leg of the 5V regulator.

Keith mentioned details on the different styles here:
https://www.pcengine-fx.com/forums/index.php?topic=18315.msg387358#msg387358

And according to BlueBMW, some chips have a 5VDC regulator on them, in which case, it's better to tap the incoming 10-12 VDC from the power cable:
https://www.pcengine-fx.com/forums/index.php?topic=9333.msg162146#msg162146

Seems people are having trouble with this new Everdrive on a US TG-16 as well, but in one case it's a region-modded Duo-R so that rules that out.

Well, personally, I'd get just rid of the region modding if there's no solution and just stick with the TE - might as well preserve the HuCard collection now.

Thanks.  If you have a US Turbo console, be sure to test it as it seems that several of us are having issues with the TEDv2 on it.

NecroPhile

I test drove mine over the weekend and found it works, but I have to fiddle around with the RX's power switch to keep it from hitting the sd card.  Such poor design means I'll probably be using the ol' neo flash cart more often, or maybe I can shave down the sd card a bit.

Yes I have the same issue, I have to hold the SD card completely inserted for the power switch to slide across the card properly. It hitches on the SD card otherwsie, and I wondered if I just had a slightly off centered board or something, but the design does seem prone to this hiccup.

Oh, so he didn't quite get good universal placement for the microSD slot for all the many iterations of NEC hardware...

I almost thought it's not just for the RX - looking at my TurboExpress just now and the green mold of the power switch to hold the card in, it's like RIGHT THERE, it almost could touch the microSD card, I thought it was! Barely avoided putting pressure on it. Yeah, he needed to have moved that IC behind it more to the center, then he could've done the same for it... Or, he could've moved it and the reset button a little closer to the USB front center and that would've been good enough...

Sigh, so a minor slot placement issue there, major no-compatibility issue with US TG-16s, he screws up $1,XXX+ orders if more than one shipping address is added with special instructions, etc... And he didn't pull the lever on going for Arcade Card support though he considered it... All in all, a little disappointing... :/ It's fine for me given my Express and Duo (the TG-16 I won in a contest broke on me in the 90's), and the bizarre order mix-up is forgivable since it worked out, but I'm sure there are others expressing far worse buyer's remorse right now.

As someone who does not have a large library of games, has never owned a flash card, and is interested in starting to develop for the system, I am the opposite of remorseful. I am so excited to get some more free time and really dive into some games I thought I would never play on actual hardware :)

For the record, my console is a Duo-R. I have not unpacked my TG-16 to test it on, once I got a Duo I packed away my TG as a backup.

I had a US Duo - but I like the aesthetic of the TGCD combo better so I sold my Duo... now I have to go back to RF if I want to use the TEDV2...

I have been thinking about getting a JP Duo or Duo-R though...

Oh, I see, you added a cover and rolled the dice with an auction. Guess word hasn't gotten around to those big spenders though about its problems with US TG-16 consoles and what not. :/ You got them $63 each (+$5 S/H) then wholesale (whole order of 10 for about $680?), but yeah, that's what every other retailer is setting the markup to, $79.

EDIT: Wait... Well, upon further review, I do not like this reseller... Thumbs down... Because if I bought from him and I ever found out the link to retrogate's store, I would be pretty f--king pissed I paid $170 (and counting) cause I fought in an auction for something available at retail for consistent price, even with the $20+ plastic shell... He is effectively withholding information, no links to krik... That's what it is... Have to call it like it is... This method knowingly relies upon low-information big-spenders and their ignorance...

I would contact the top bidder right now if I could... I don't like it when I get ripped off, don't like to see it happen to others either.

Except I didn't mark anything up. I started the auction at $79. So you don't like me because people bid up my auctions. OK... I actually make tons of information freely available online, whether it be how to make 3D shells or the SD card setups themselves so you can hardly blame me for a lack of info online:
  • How to make an $11 3D printed shell
  • How to modify V1 shells for V2 - the only explanation online
  • Complete SD card setups - Google SmokeMonster (These are copy and paste setups that have dozens of hours invested in finding verified sources for roms that are TED-compatible. This required testing every single game because TED is quite picky about headers)
Also, I received a response from Krikzz about the v2.2 fiasco today and he has a fix ready but we'll have to return our v2.2s to him to have the FPGA re-flashed. If you need this update, send your TEDs back to him using this form: http://krikzz.com/return_form.txt

That's good news!  :D

But I'd kind of like KRIKzz to actually confirm this fix on his own forums ... where this news hasn't been posted, yet.

Then it'll be interesting to see which sacrificial-lamb actually sends theirs off first, and then reports back whether the fix is fully working.

I'd like some brave soul with both a TG16 and a TGCD to actually confirm that it works.

AFAIK, krikzz only received a TG16-by-itself from StoneAgeGamer in order to track down the problems.

Anyway ... I suspect that it will be less of a "re-flash", and more of a "re-place" ... those FPGA chips are only one-time-programmable.

So his repair guy is almost-certainly going to have to remove the old FPGA and replace it with a new one.
