I just found this board a few days ago and have been reading as much as I can!  When I was a kid I got a TG16 right after it came out, and I was always a fan.  I have all the ROMS, but emulation just isn't the same.  I decided to get a PC Engine because win the early '90's I used to see ads for import systems in the back of game mags and I thought they looked so cool.

I ordered a white briefcase system from japaneseimportgames.com (it was on sale!) along with a Super Famicom, Famicom AV, and some games.  Jpanese hardware is so much cooler then the US stuff.  The only consoles I have now are PS2, SNES jr, GB Micro, and DS Lite.

Anyway, what are some good CD games I should be on the lookout for the PCE?  Also, is there any way to get TG16 HuCards to play in the PCE?  Will a CD-R copy of Dracula X play OK on the briefcase?  Will it damage it?

Odonadon

Welcome to the board!  You had a lot of questions, which I will leave to more qualified people to answer.

In terms of what games are good, there are many review sites out there (Turbo2k being one of them) to help you decide what types of games you may want to check out.

Having said that, what types of games are you into and perhaps we can suggest a few that may be to your liking?

TR0N

Congrats on the purchase not a bad way to start either.

Btw keep in mind the cd games are region free a pce can play u.s and jpn cd games.

Have fun man  8)

Your really gonna love the PCE. To get started, i would suggest checking out the PC Engine Software Bible: http://feeds.directsex.com/index2.aspx?room=6&cclean=0.1124725
Not every game has reviews, but it will give you a nice starting point.

Welcome :)

There are tons of great games to suggest, so, as previously stated, you should tell us what genres you really dig. Also, tell us if you are interested in HuCards and / or CD's.

Great to see people still rockin' this system. You went the right route, as the Turbo/PCE is one of those systems where you don't know how great a system REALLY is until you import.

Go to this thread and see some PCE videos in action.

CrackTiger

I wouldn't recommend playing cdr games on the original PCE CD-ROM. I've heard all kinds of stories about how they can damage the lens. Maybe is all b.s., but I wouldn't risk it.

As for games, I can give a you a good brief list to start, if you can tell me what genres you do like and which ones you definately do not(everyone loves pachinko, mahjong and date sims right?).
Justin the Not-So-Cheery Black/Hack/CrackTiger helped Joshua Jackass, Andrew/Arkhan Dildovich and the DildoPhiles destroy 2 PC Engine groups: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook, then the other by Aaron Nanto!!! Him and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together! Both times he blamed the Aarons and their staff in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner, never himself nor his deranged/destructive/doxxing toxic turbo troll gang which he covers up for under the "community" euphemism!

takashirose

Yeah, you have to experience the Turbo systems in order to appreciate them.  I got my Turbo Duo with the game bundle inside.  They are all good:

Ys Book I and II

Gate of Thunder(U.S. release, which includes Bonk 1 + 2, and Bomberman with a code at the title screen)

Splatterhouse

Those are the games that I started with and is a good place for you to start.  From there you will get addicted to the system and start to buy other games.

Thanks for all the replies.  I've been reading around and have a good handle on what games to pick up.

The CD-R thing has me worried though.  One of the big reasons for picking up the console was to play Dracula-X.  I kinda blew my load cash wise getting the system, and won't be able to shell out $100 for a legit copy of that game for a while.  Is there definative proof that CD-R's damage ALL units, or is it a crap shoot?  Also, are the laser pick-up's repairable and what would that cost?

Ninja Spirit

When PC Engine brief case and Dracula X go in the same sentence, there is one intercepting question: Did you pick up a System Card 3.0 or Arcade Card Duo?

Yeah, the set came with system card 3.0

Well, like any CD player/CD-ROM it depends on the quality and brand of media.  I have only ever had problems on my PC Engine with the Cursor CD-Rs (cheap).  All other brands I've tried (Memorex, Sony, etc.) work fine.

_Paul

You absolutely MUST get Ys Books I&II and Gate of Thunder.

takashirose

Save up your money for a legit Dracula X then.  It won't just disappear.  Check eBay when you have enough.

Well this sucks.  It looks like Paypal "froze" japangamestock's account.  They opened a 2nd account, but they froze that too.  I'll be getting my money back, but I'm still bummed.

What are some other good online shops for PCE/Famicom stuff, in Japan or elsewhere, that take Paypal?

Yeah, I'm sure i'll just send them a money order, I just hate waiting.  I "re-discovered" PCE/TG16 a few days ago and I'm wanting to play a "real" system.  Although emulation on my PSP is holding me over

By the way, I'm from MD too (now in FL), I miss it up there...

takashirose

So it's not a good time to get a game from JapanGameStock.com?

Well, it's been a week now and I still have not gotten my money back.  It's almost $400!  Sometime I really hate Paypal...

Vanquish

Hi. I am gonna give you a good advice (i hope).
Buy your system on ebay. I know some good sellers than even replaced me a defective pc engine, so no problems here. You will have to pay throu paypal but that isnt a problem either (i never had a problem with that).

I suggest you, for explample, a guy called hit-japan. Sells tons of things. Or nippotopia. Or.. lots more of japanesse sellers. You will get bored looking at their sales :P

I will link you a console here:
boxed pc engine duo http://cgi.ebay.es/PC-Engine-DUO-Console-Boxed-Import-JAPAN_W0QQitemZ320018600783QQihZ011QQcategoryZ62054QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem

forget about duo-r and duo-rx, the original duo is the sexyest ;)

You can try get a pc engine + interface unit + cdrom2 (that is what i have and what i like more) but it will be more expensive and hard to find a nice and good cared system, although i think it is worth it :)

And about games... these are the ones i like most: R-Type CD, Bomberman 93/94, Gradius 2, wonderboy 3, galaga 88, PC Gengin/PC Kid and the great StreetFighter 2 '

I hope this will help you. IF you spent those 400$... with that you will be able to buy what i am telling you and more on ebay.

Good luck having them back and good luck getting your pc engine, it is worth it :)

TEKWRX

Thanks for your advice.  Yeah, I've been looking at ebay a lot.  I'm sure that's where my system will come from.  I'm just waiting for Paypal to refund my money 1st.  The $400 wasn't just for the PC-Engine.  The briefcase system was only $135, I also bought a famicom, super famicom, and a bunch of games...

takashirose

Check out www.gamechoiceclub.com  .  I never bought from them yet, but they have what you are looking for.

I notice some mention, Hit-Japan keep in mind when you buy from that seller it's a "gamble" weather you get a working console or not.

nippotopia replaced me a non working pc engine for another one only paying half the shipping :)

and yeah, Dream_Stars_Japan has quality

Keranu

Congratulations on making possibly the greatest video game decision :) . The PCE+CDROM2 briefcase design is one of the coolest designs in console history and I'm sure you'll fall in love with it as much as I have with mine ;) . There are piles upon piles of great games for the system and a huge library to search and hunt through, so collecting never seems to get old for it. You can find lots of thread around here that recommends new games to new people and I am sure they will come in a lot of handy. Welcome and once again, congratulations :) !
Quote from: TurboXray on 01/02/2014, 09:21 PMAdding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).
