10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

Hello, I'm new to both the forums and the PCE in general.

I recently picked up a few different pce's quiet cheap as they were untested. Now the super cd rom2 unit powers on but once the run button is pressed the cd drive starts to read the disc but it makes a loud clicking sound, sometimes to reads the disc after a few clicks and plays fine, other times it just keeps clicking over and over.

Does anyone have any ideas please? I have a lot of games on the way I'm itching to play!

Thanks

laser might be on its way out youll need to source a HOP-M3

the laser may just need to be adjusted.  see the sticky's in this thread for how to do that.

FYI - if you do decide to get a new laser, the super cdrom2 uses a hop-m3a which is different than the hop-m3 and they aren't interchangeable

I think the Super Cd-Rom 2 units caps are probably going bad or already are too. It tends to suffer similar issues like the Duo, so its time for some system maintenance.

The super cdrom ( grey color one ) is using KSS-210A laser lens. I wonder the click sound is coming from the Gear but Not from laser lens inself. You can find KSS-210A ( including the loading mechanism , eg, gear ) pretty easy.

Thanks for the response. I will look into all of the above. I've never been too good at tinkering with circuit boards though, does anyone know of a uk based person who could sort this out for me? Thanks

THIS as well..... bad caps on a super cdrom2 usually first manifest as sound issues, but can also cause laser issues as well.  they need to be replaced ASAP.

if it were mine, i would replace the caps and, if necessary, adjust the pots on the laser.... if those dont fix it, i would replace the laser.

Yes, as schweaty and ProfessorProfessorón said,  please change the Caps and clean the PCB from Electrolytic Liquids

An older thread helped me replace caps and it helped with sound, video and load times to an extent. If after all that, you may need to replace the lens itself. But do try these options out and check back with updates so we can help. ;)

Thanks for the replies everyone. Looks like I'll have to get it re-capped, though I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it myself, the console works absolutely fine aside from the clicking on initial boot up so I wouldn't want to ruin it :?
