Pretty sure he means the PSP version. Only problem is with that, you're then playing on the PSP and not a proper CRT. I still think $200 is high and I'm surprised it went up so much within the few months of me getting mine and today.

That makes him even dumber, seeing as nobody is claiming the PSP game is worth $200.

You could use a Go and play on a CRT and use a real controller.  It's still not as good (TurboPad > DS3), but it's not a horrible option.

Quote from: technozombie on 10/08/2015, 04:02 AMIt's probably not as applicable here but I always tried to look at the value of a game in terms of entertainment hours. For example a DVD movie would have cost about $20 for a 2 hour movie that you would most likely only watch 2-3 times. That's at most 6 hours of entertainment for $20. So a game offering 30 hours of entertainment is easily worth the $50 that new games used to cost. Also the PSP has TV out so technically RoB can be played on a TV that way although I'm not sure how well it plays technically speaking. Besides the the amount of entertainment value one gets from playing burned games is incredible when compared to the cost of a replacement lens.
I've always thought of it the same way.  I never minded paying full price for a new RPG back in the day because I would get a lot of playtime out of it.

Quote from: tbone3969 on 10/14/2015, 10:19 PMI'd say a Mint Drac X with spine is worth $150.  From what I understand that is about what it cost to import it when it came out.  It's one of the best Castlevanais ever.  Well worth the $150 IMO.
Nah, it was a $65-75 game new, just like everything else on PCE. When the reprints showed up shops knew to charge more, $90-100, but they basically never actually had it. I don't remember anyone paying $150 for a PCE SuperCD game in 1993. That's on the high side for SFC games, and PCE CD games were much much cheaper than SFC carts. SFII' was $150 for a few months but it didn't take long to go on clearance.

Quote from: CGQuarterly on 10/08/2015, 02:35 AMThe experience of playing through Drac X is of course not worth $200, which is why it's $9 on the Virtual Console.
The reason that Dracula X is $9 on the virtual console is because TG-16 imports are 700-900 points by default. Also, I don't see how an emulated version of the game being $9 devalues the games worth in any way. These types of things really come down to what it's worth to the individual. Don't think it's worth $200? Then just don't buy it. Granted, I am glad I got mine for much less, if I didn't have a choice and really wanted to re-live that nostalgia in the way that I remembered it, $200 would be well worth it to experience that feeling again. And that's with any game, really. Many sub-par games are selling for much more.

There would be nothing stopping Nintendo from charging more for any particular VC game if they saw fit.  I never said that the VC game devalued the PCE version.  What I am saying is that the experience of playing through the game is not what people are paying $200 for, which is stating the obvious (although maybe not obvious enough).  If you want to re-live the nostalgia of playing through the game, you don't need to buy the original version of the game in order to accomplish that.

The "experience" differs from person to person. For some, owning and playing a physical copy is part of that experience. Prices of emulated versions are only relevant to those who want to simply just play the game. Some of us want the whole package.

geise

I've owned the game since it's initial release in 93.  I love the game to death, but no way in fuck is it worth $200.  People need to wise up with their money and realize there's better ways to spend it.  Never going to happen but I just wanted to say it.

It's definitely one of my favorite games (possibly even my favorite Castlevania); but yeah, I won't pay that much for it.  Paying $70 or so for Popful Mail not long ago was a huge deal for me.  I'd probably pay around the same for Rondo, but not much more; especially since I have the PSP version.

Honestly, I think the only game I might really consider paying close to $200 for on the Duo is Dead of the Brain 1+2, just because I absolutely love interactive novels and it would be a lot of fun to pop in and show people who don't know much about the system.  I've never seen it for less than $300, though; so I doubt I'll ever actually get to own it.  I guess one other might be the US version of Magical Chase, but even then that would only be because I'd know that I'd never see it that cheap again.  I doubt I'd actually spend a lot of time playing it, what with shooters being my least favorite genre...

I also kind of get what Sarumaru is saying about the "experience" of playing it on an actual console.  There's something so wonderful about popping the actual game into a real system, leafing through instruction manuals, and holding the original controller in your hand.  That's really what got me to buy into the system in the first place, as otherwise I would have likely kept on playing all my games via emulation.  It makes me think about something Giles said in Buffy the Vampire Slayer about not liking computers as much as books because, "they don't smell."  Some of us are just wired that way, I guess.

I've had this game forever now, no need to feel sorry for me or anyone.  But for some, the experience is a multitude of things, like Shawnji also said. Shouldn't look down on people simply because they want to experience things a certain way.

I want to poke in this puppy's cute eyes.
You know you guys want it too.

Back to topic, I would gladly pay another single digit no. of dollars for Rondo on VC if I didn't have it already. Since it was classed as an import "Hana Bi" title, it already cost more than regular PCE releases on VC.

I could judge buying it for under 50 bucks for a real copy. No fakeass bootleg bullshit. But that's it, I don't think that situation will ever arise and I'm OK with that. For other PCE games available on VC I really think deeply before I'd buy them for silly money elsewhere. I'm glad there's easy instant access to a lot of good games at fair prices. For everything else which is not and come with ridiculous pricetags there's still CD-R and the Everdrive.

Bernie

I wouldn't like paying 200 bucks for it, which is why I am glad to have other options.  :)
