Every time that I blow my chance at a perfect game I still have the hope that replaying all or part of a level will increase my score enough to beat my best score and this time I at least had that when I finished...

359600

gheebee

364700

Still no perfect game though...

gheebee

386000

Perfect game, didn't die once!

FINALLY! :D

Even I die at various pionts in this game. Hmmm....I wonder...

Nope, I am a spazz.

It is probably my favorite TG-16 game and one that I consider myself good at but I definitely can't no-death it. I always find myself rushing through the game and dying a stupid death :)

Maybe I will give it a shot this weekend and see where my score comes in at!

I'm not man enough to beat NAI.  I always run too much and plow into enemies or into holes.

You are too good, post shitty scores instead so we have a chance!

gheebee

When I first started playing this game my strategy was to avoid the enemies rather than kill them and scores were a bit lower (220000 – 280000) but then I started trying to kill more and more enemies when I played and shortly after started keeping score. I'll have to try doing a run through avoiding the enemies again and see how it goes like that.

PukeSter

Gheebee, thank you for the inspiration

Usually I waste lots of continues, but today I finally beat it in one continue. And no turbo switches

Don't worry your score is safe, but here's a solid 2nd place. I'll upload a photo later

369600, 4 lives left

PukeSter

gheebee

Nice work, it's great to see another player in this thread and that is a pretty damn good score for beating it the first time using no continues!
Definitely don't want to use turbo switches in this one, having II set to anything other than 1 will prevent you from running and having I set to anything other than 1 will prevent you from jumping high.
Feel like I should give it another go now... :]

gheebee

...and I did. 397800, another perfect game. So close to my 400000 goal...

crazydean

I'm struggling with this game. Any advice for the third boss? Also, how do you handle the rats that come from the left of the screen?

gheebee

The third boss is definitely one of the hardest bosses in the game, the only other one that compares is the one from level 6. If you're really fast with the hatchets you can take him down as or immediately after he makes the second stack of blocks appear; to do this you want to jump towards him at the beginning of the fight and land somewhere that you can hit him (basically where the fist stack of blocks will appear), try to make sure that you hit him with 3 hatchets per jump (high jumps, hold II as you jump and then try and hit II as many times as you can while you're in the air) and cut it close with moving out of the way of the first thing he throws and then position yourself so you won't get hit by the second stack when it appears and keep hitting him with the hatchets.
A slightly easier but slower method is to get to the leftmost portion of the screen after he makes the second stack appear. Hit all of the blocks you can before they start falling (bottom 4) and then high jump immediately after the top 2 that you can't hit start to fall and take them out with the hatchets, after that hit the bottom 3 blocks from the 3rd stack, run under it, and start hitting him again as he walks back to the right side of the screen.

As for the coyotes coming from the left, remember that on 3-3 both will jump over you, don't try and jump over them or you will get hit. All of the others are ones you have to jump over but you'll always know they're coming because you'll pass a flower right before they start running after you. Jump over them and then try and land the jump immediately behind them so you can kill them but remember that they will come to a dead stop after you hit them one time, so don't get too close or you'll run into them before you can hit them a second time.

I hope this helps but unfortunately I can't seem to type this out as clearly as I can see it in my head. Unless you're really quick the second method is probably the one to go for, once you get it once you'll probably have the timing down from then on though. Maybe I'll see if I can make a video of the 3rd boss later on.

one clarification: sometimes I say "high jump" and other times "jump" but they're all high jumps; I'm always holding down II when I jump in this game

Thanks a lot for this. I'm going to try this next time I Turbo. Also, didn't know about the flowers. Seems kinda lame that some of the coyotes jump and others don't.

It's nice when enemies have more than one behavior.

Keeps you on your toes.

Some rats in JJ & Jeff jump...whilst others just scurry across the ground.

No problem, hope that it helps, of all the bosses in the game the one from level 3 took the most amount of tries to kill the first time. I made a video of the boss fight. At first I tried to do the quick kill but the delay I get with an emulator on the TV in my living room made it hard for me to follow my own advice, you can see when/where to jump for the second method even though I actually only hit one of the two blocks with the hatchet this time.
The first time I got killed by the jumping coyote on 3-3 (said 4-2 originally but it is actually 3-3) I was kind of annoyed because it really did seem kind of cheap since if you jump there isn't much chance of recovering, so it is basically trial and error. I think I've always remembered even though when I got to later stages for the first time I got killed assuming there would be others that jump. The flower warning is actually from the original NES game and now that we're talking about it I think I'll have to pay attention to see if the flowers on 3-3 are any different from the ones in the rest of the game, maybe it does sort of warn you but I kind of don't think so.
Anyway, good luck with the rest of the game!

crazydean

JJ and Jeff sucks.

Anyway, Thanks for the help gheebee! I just beat the third boss for the first time. The key seems to be in using the axe and trying to throw it three times per jump.

I'm surprised you don't just use the magic fire weapon the whole game.

gheebee

Glad to hear you finally beat the boss, the the rest should be smooth sailing when you get to them.
I like the hatchets the best because they seem the quickest but it is nice being able to use the fireballs to quickly destroy things like boulders for extra points, they don't seem to take down the bosses as quickly as I expected and I find their angle to be a little awkward sometimes though.

crazydean

So I took some pictures of the coyotes while playing today and yesterday. The first one is the non-jumping coyote and regular flower.

IMG

These are the jumping coyote and its flower.

IMG

IMG

As you can see, the jumping coyote flower is more orange whereas the regular coyote flower is pink.

On a side note, these weird diagonal lines show up when taking a picture. I'm not concerned with it since I can't see it with my eyes. I've just never noticed it before.

esteban

Pink vs. Orange Flowers.

I don't think I ever noticed this before.

Died about 5 times
Nice, I updated the first post. A few weeks ago I made several attempts at hitting 400000 and really took my time trying to be sure to kill every thing possible and I think I somehow managed to finish with only around 370000.

gheebee

Gave it another try and once again tried to rack up as many points as possible but only wound up with 368600. I think that there is a score multiplier that you get if you stay alive long enough because it always seems like I accumulate points a lot slower after the first time I die and the only time I ever got 390000+ points was one of the times I had a perfect game. Someday I'll hit 400000...

Quote from: crazydean on 12/18/2016, 08:45 PMDo you use the fireball to destroy rocks and stuff?
I tend to avoid the fireballs because I find them awkward to use, but I do destroy a good number of rocks and boulders when I have the boomerang. I see your point since there would be more opportunities for points if I always used fireballs but I don't think I did this that time I came close to 400000. Still though, I'll have practice with the fireballs the next time I play!

gheebee

416600!!! Finally broke 400000! :D

Thanks for suggesting the fireballs, crazydean!

Gheebee, how many more points could you score while using as many lives as possible? It's not like lives are tallied up at the end.

i.e. dying at the end, and restarting on the high point value levels/checkpoints.

I've thought about that quite a bit but never tried it, even though I've played so many times part of the fun for me is trying to do it all with 1 life or, in most cases, as few as possible. Usually when I play I reset the game after I die (love that select+run reset!) unless I just want to complete it and be done or feel like I'm on track for a high score when I die that first time. Still though, it seems like something that might be worth mastering if I ever try for 500000! Hell, it might be a good challenge just figuring it out seeing as how some secrets can only be had once and carryover items from previous levels often make a difference with what you can get and how many points you can score.

Agreed: the most-satisfying way to achieve a high score is with one-life (less opportunities to scam points).

Now, folks can still milk stuff in a 1CC (especially for games where there are respawining enemies and lots of extra time), but thankfully the lifebar in NAI keeps things relatively fair.

I don't begrudge the person who creatively milks a high score (exploiting extra lives), but it is qualitatively different category of "high score".

:)
