I felt like putting together a box of crap from japan and came across this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sengoku-Blade-Sega-Saturn-JP-GAME-/331799985260?hash=item4d40d1fc6c:g:ZqIAAOSwP~tW4lnp

Sengoku blade, with almost 4 hours left on auction and no spine card.
currently bid to $112.
what the hell? i thought it was like a $40-50 game on the high end?

xcrement5x

It's the rack. People love the boobies on that chick.

Everything has been going up though.  For a long time Sega stuff was immune to it and it was mainly Nintendo that was heavily inflating, now people are throwing money at everything.   We were talking about Dreamcast prices that one day, even stuff that used to be semi-reasonable is inflating.  Skies of Arcadia managed to go from being like $40 or so to almost $80 in just the last several months.

I've kinda noticed, i think i just needed to bitch.

I'm in a few gaming groups on FB, those people are just insane.

I wonder if Japan has retro game personalities that help drive prices? I mean watching GameCenter CX made me want Super Fanasy Zone.

Otaking

I guessed before clicking the link it would be a yamatoku-classic auction, and it was.
Don't judge trends or general prices on his auction end prices, for years they (suspiciously) always end very high over general market value.

Everyone knows you needed to buy your games 20 years ago...  or 20 years from now.

The good news is you can play what you got for the next 20 years.

Saturn has definitely been one of the hardest affected by the retro price spike.  Everything's gone up, but Saturn really jumped.  I think the same is going to happen to Gamecube soon.  I know component cables for it have been pricey for some time, but games have mostly stayed affordable.  It seems that consoles that get ignored while they're new become the expensive hot item a few generations later.

crazydean

Uh oh guys, better start collecting for the Wii U now.

BigusSchmuck

Yeah Panzer Dragoon Saga has definitely gone up in the past several years. Hell, I thought I paid too much for it back in 2013 ($150). http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=sega+saturn+panzer+dragoon+saga&_sop=16
Now it looks like people are trying to sell their single discs for that price.

Quote from: crazydean on 03/16/2016, 08:54 AMUh oh guys, better start collecting for the Wii U now.
Retail price is the "bargain" price. Nintendo is releasing some "classics" at cheaper prices. But even then better act now. The WiiU will be this "underrated" console full of "undiscovered" "gems".

esadajr

as per Saturn goes, like the Turbo, it used to be only US releases were affected. Japanese resellers caught up and know they can sell at collectard prices to the crazy americans.

Only cheapies are those where the language barrier makes them unplayable.

Best is to give up and play from backup discs, Saturn CD drives seem to be as reliable as PC Engine ones and suitable replacements are widely available as well. In some cases I rather play on an emulator because of fear of losing progress.

Had a quick look around at the prices of sold Japanese Sega Saturn games and the prices seem to generally be about the same as around 2010 when I was last looking up SS prices.

I should have grabbed the following back before 2006 just when I went all xbox 360..

Metal Black
Winning Post - USA
Final Fight Revenge
Elevator Action Returns
Deep Fear - UK/EU
Keio Flying Squadron 2 - EU/EU

I used to have Shinrei Jusatsushi Taromaru which I sold before youtube existed but I don't regret selling it.

This all my Sega Saturn games they retired and stored away in a box as the only time and money i have nowadays for retro gaming is for the pce.

I started getting into Saturn around 2003 and at that time the US stuff was still kind of pricey.  Not at today's levels but it was still high relatively speaking.  I think Panzer was around $150 at the time and Radiant Silvergun was not cheap.

I wish I would have picked up more stuff I was so happy with a mod chip I only picked up a few originals here or there.  Didn't help that one of my buddies had almost all the US set and I could borrow it freely.  I believe he still has that set with most of the big titles.

There is definitely a correlation between the Saturn and PCE fans.  We are different and go for the underdog.

Deep Fear - UK/EU

Man I regret not getting that one I have the Jpn version but for some reason I really liked that game.  I remember messaging UK ebay sellers to ship to US and they said no grrrrr.

CrackTiger

I bought a bunch of Saturn games not long ago and was shocked by how cheap things are. I bought a lot of the best games too. I paid $230 Can. for X-Men vs SF when it came out. Now you can buy it on eBay for $15. So many other games that I paid $70 - $200 for bitd now go for <$10.

It's never been a better time to buy Saturn games.
Justin the Not-So-Cheery Black/Hack/CrackTiger helped Joshua Jackass, Andrew/Arkhan Dildovich and the DildoPhiles destroy 2 PC Engine groups: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook, then the other by Aaron Nanto!!! Him and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together! Both times he blamed the Aarons and their staff in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner, never himself nor his deranged/destructive/doxxing toxic turbo troll gang which he covers up for under the "community" euphemism!

Koop

I just stick with CD-Rs for most of my games and only try to pick up titles I really want. Because of that my Saturn collection is a total of one single legit game. Still looking for a copy of Rockman 8 personally.

DeshDildo

Genesis and Turbo/PCE takes up all of my gaming funds.  It is for this reason I appreciate the Saturn a friend gave me for free and Pseudo Saturn.
"You CAN'T prove Nulltard/DoxPhile caused ANY harm/damage/sabotage to PCEFX!! You have NO evidence he poached ANY members for his own failed PC Engine forum/site or was a conniving destructive saboteur! ZERO, ZIP, NADA!!! Nulltard did nothing wrong!"

SignOfZeta

Man, prices SUCK where you are. I didn't get XMvsSF until it was old but I got MSHvsSF the day it came out and I paid $60. The version with RAM was $8-12 more depending on where you got it.

But either way, I see your point and I agree. I've bought so many Saturn games online for less than $1 it's stupid. The thing is, it isn't value that attracts collectards, it's the exact opposite of that. They want somthing R@REOMG and if they go to eBay and see that, for example, Street Fighter Zero 2 (one of the best fighters ever made) is going for $1.35 then that game sucks as far as they are concerned. They see that Panzer is $1000 and that's what a good game is to them.

There are a lot of super cheap Saturn games but usually because most of them are games printed in huge quantities, either they are mega selling Sega titles or sports things RPGs, and the more people see these "crap" titles stinking up collections and never getting good prices the more their worldview is reenforced; that Fighters Megamix has no value. Fuck those idiots.

Sega Saturn games can still be found cheap outside of the ones that have shiny Working Designs covers and the ones that came out really late with low print runs.  Other than Panzer Dragoon for $160 and Daytona Netlink, I got all my Saturn games at good value.

For those who want cheaper games, I second Fighters Megamix and Street Fighter Alpha 2, both games I have played many hours of.  Once you fight as a car or hunk of meat, the charm will win you over.

Other games I really enjoy (others might not) that are cheap are:
- Virtua Cops (get a gun!) or even the other light gun games.
- For all you guys in your mid-30s, you owe yourself a playthrough of Double Switch!
-  I enjoy the Sega racing games, even Sonic R (get the Nights controller).
-  Gets Nights while you are at it!
-  Panzer Dragoon 1 is still $20 I think, great game.
-  Does anyone have a weird obsession over Robo Pit?  I do.
-  When you get tired of the great SF Alpha 2, treat your friends to the much shittier SF: The Movie.  If you really want them to hate you, turn Criticom on.
- Blast Chamber is an unliked game, but it shouldn't be.  4 player is a...  blast.

If you want to go more expensive, Guardian Heroes and Dragon Force are the two games worth the cost of entry.  If you get a multi-tap and have a few people over, YOU MUST do an all Citizen 3 battle in Guardian Heroes, you will not regret it.  Random character level optional.

bartre

I need to get guardian heroes back- i had to sell it last summer.

beyond that i know I want Magic Knight Rayearth again (jesus i hate the idea of shelling out for it)
but beyond that i think i'd be fine with the JP releases of every other game - beemer sold me panzer dragoon 1, i need #2, the layer section games, keio 2, and some of the shmups (soukyugurentai comes to mind)

other than that, most of the fighters are  CPS2 games which i have the darksoft board for, or fall into the category of "not my type" anyway.

o.pwuaioc

MKR is fine in JP, too.

I'm still looking for Shienryu and Metal Black. I got a Souky to trade if that's of interest. But sadly, very few want to part with those two these days.

bartre

sadly no, they're both great games, but i don't feel like paying for MB, and i've got Shienryu on the STV multicart.

I know MKR had some gameplay fixes (mostly lag related) in the US release, but I just have a special attachment to the series, and it's one i used to play through pretty regularly when i had it.

Nintendo BS is what will eventually cause the bubble to pop.

I got a lot of my Saturn stuff while it was current, pretty happy in general but there's always more stuff I'd like to get.  I didn't get a lot of english language games because I was into getting the imports before a US version came out, so my MKR is the Japanese one, same for Guardian Heroes and Saturn Bomberman.  My favorite Saturn Working Designs title that I have is probably Iron Storm, but I would have liked to get MKR and Dragon Force 2.  Last two I picked up were Last Gladiators Pinball (USA) and Necronomicon Pinball (Xmas gift actually).  I wanted to get Burning Rangers, Deep Fear, Bulk Slash and some others but I guess I'll just wait until opportunity strikes.  I have some great games though for it in the meantime!

The ultra cheesy voice acting is an attraction, to be sure. But I've yet to complete the game. I always kinda lose interest.

You now mentioned metal black and come to think of it anything that was made by "Ving" has definitely gone up since I bought my Ving set.  Bubble Symphony has gone up like 2 fold since I purchased it a few years back, elevator action returns I think now has even surpassed mizubaku daibouken and mizubaku is actually harder to find imo.  Metal black and nightstriker s have also been going on a climb.  Even the XING games have gone up especially PuLiRuLa which is weird because it was like the cheapest xing title to get.

Well, that's not what I meant by "always."

But yeah, getting one can be difficult.  I am using a GDEMU in my Dreamcast which I bought used off a friend for a good deal.  For the time being, I'm going with the mod chip and Action Replay cart in my Saturn, but I'm still considering a Rhea just for long term support since the disc drive won't last forever, and I only have one backup Saturn at the moment.

I've been very happy with the GDEMU, so I think it's safe to say I would enjoy the Rhea or Phoebe.

It is a very good game, and there is even a code to put the whole game in english, but I don't think so.  I think of the price I paid for it, and think that should be just around the ballpark of what the game should cost.  That being 35, I think its not fair that these ving titles are getting out of hand.

I been annoyed as well that every time I am thinking of getting a Rhea it is out of stock.  When I get a Rhea I will probably pick up a gray Saturn.

Anyway a tip I am using now guys is this.  Create a wordpress account and then subscribe to the site that creates the Rhea.  Every time any update happens at the site I get an email.  It's a little annoying but I will know the second the pre-order begins.

You can also invest in replacement lasers.  I bought about 10 of them in bulk from China to replace a number of busted units and they've been working fine so far.

I mainly go the modchip route right now since the new Universal chips are so nice and easy.

Count me in on the above fandom. Robo Pit does have one of the worst soundtracks around, and the gameplay is nothing special, but I still enjoy the game and robots that you can build. Most of the US games have definitely gone up in price which makes me sad I didn't really jump in on Saturn collecting when I had the chance. I bought Gungriffion for $6 complete back in 2013 and I'd be lucky to pay that much for just the disc these days. I dunno about Japanese imports though, I never really paid attention to the prices of those until recently since I foolishly bought a US console as my first Saturn and never invested in an Action Replay.

Dumbasses are figuring out how to import and play games they otherwise couldn't.

the excitement hits them and they're too dumb to restrain themselves and pay normal prices or just wait it out.

I've seen cases where a game bid-wars up to higher than an auction of the same game, with a BIN price that is less.

People are literally that stupid.  They will bid higher than buy it now prices.

I do not understand it.

Can noob retro gaming be a drawn out and highly specialized form of attention seeking masochism? Is Tobias like a dom? Do they put the plastic on the games because that's how their wicked step aunt put plastic on her furniture? Are their own hands too filthy to touch their games?

I like when auctions have a BIN that goes away if bidding starts, and you get fucknuts that see a sane BIN, go "im going to try getting it cheap!"

... and then contribute to the bid war that shoots it up 20-30$ more than the BIN.... while more are listed with the cheaper BIN price.

Stop fucking bidding and buy the other ones!

I can't think of how many times I was bidding on shit and just said "nope" and did a BIN on another auction.

The Sega Saturn is one of those consoles I now semi- discourage people from getting into. While price is definitely a factor, I think on one hand you have arcade ports that can just as easily be emulated in MAME or were ported to the PS1; and on the other, you have weird exclusives that, with a couple of shining exceptions (but not the SAT Shining games, all of those suck), don't stand up to Sega exclusives on the Genesis and Dreamcast.

I've sold a large portion of my collection over the years, because there are only so many early, ugly 3D games you can stomach, only so many mediocre Working Designs titles you can suffer through*, and unless you've got a crowd of friends, those fighting games aren't doing you any favors by themselves. There's obviously good games on the console, but this is a case where you can literally afford to be picky.

... and then contribute to the bid war that shoots it up 20-30$ more than the BIN.... while more are listed with the cheaper BIN price.
I try to psychologically exploit this in bidders when I list auctions on ebay. I gotta make money and it ain't my fault that people can't control themselves.  8)
