Best emulators (multiple consoles)

So I'm on a journey to work through some of my backlog this year and attempt to complete 50 games. I would like to stream/record some of these gameplay sessions, but i currently don't have the extra funds to get a framemiester (or like device) to capture my older consoles. So I'm just going to emulate stuff.
Since its been a very very long time since of played with emulators. What are some of the better options out there?

Mind you I am using a PC that i have put custom firmware on the video card so i can display the PC on my PVM. Right now its just being used as a groovyMAME set up. But would like to run emulators for older consoles as well TG16,PCE,MD,SNES, and Sega CD to name a few.

See if you can install the Kega Fusion video codec on whatever Windows version you're using these days. That covers Feka. I remember JNES also has video recording capabilities (more like some kind of save state + avi export).

what is the desired recording method? HDMI output to capture card? Screencorder? (camtasia, etc) or built in emulator functionality?

I second the retropie, it's $50 and plays all of the old systems up to PSX with few hiccups.  The only two systems it has problems emulates are the Nintendo 64 (few bugs, which with the right settings, and updates are getting fixed.. i.e. most games playable, and Sega Saturn (to my knowledge doesn't play at all). Sega Saturn never had a good emulation, even on PC's.

If you already have a pc setup for groovymame, just use the pc emus and output it to your tv. As awesome as the little retropi's are you won't have to worry about much limitations to emulators.  Keep using CRT_Emudriver and Switchres. "SwitchRes standalone has a commandline option for --emulator where you can specify emulators other than MAME for it to work with."  This topic can be a good start.  Little old, but can probably help get you up and running.  Since you already have groovymame working you already have most of the hard work done. http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=138062.40

I play with a RetroPie for emulating consoles (among other things) and modified an original Xbox and put CoinOPS 8 Gold on it for arcade emulation. Mame emulation on the RetroPie can be a bit fiddly if you want to build it yourself (there are a few images out there that come pre-configured, but where's the fun in that), but I like CoinOPS on the Xbox because I can plug my X-Arcade Dual Stick into it and it just works. X-Arcade can be configured on the RetroPie as well, but it's a bit fiddly.

Yeah, retropie can definitely be a bit fiddly when it comes to connecting the controllers.
