Agreed, Arkhan. There was definitely a reason for shoutbox going down so many years ago, I think I remember it getting flooded by Russian spambots and it just became unbearable. But what I've always wondered is, why didn't it come back after a few months or so? Having chat here used to really connect the community and made communication a few steps easier.

I know ppl don't like IRC but that's kind of ridiculous considering that its been around for like 20 years. Fuck... do I still have my number user id from a back then? Anyway, having chat integrated into the forum is better than leap-frogging to three different sites to talk about stuff.

Talking about Dischord is just creating another problem that will eventually die off just like Paul's chat is supposed to any day now. Why not fix a the problem here? Also I'm aware that this will cause a headache for someone, but couldn't we just try turning shoutbox back on?

The "official" story was, that was how we were hacked was via the chatbox......why it never came back was probably due to Aaron being pretty much ghost forever now.

I always thought that this was the main fucking problem, that we could just drop some secure, already existing chatroom via a piece of code into a box right below the announcements and adbar. It would also be extra badass if said chatroom were part of a 20-year-old network that's older than AIM.

Anyway, thanks for bringing this up because its a conversation that's needed to happen for years. I'm sure somebody is going to get pissed at us for suggesting that work be done, because it will ultimately be work for someone. Again, I would volunteer my time as I have offered before to the site Administrators to help see it through; I'm a quick study but my coding knowledge is admittedly limited.

As long as its added to the top banner area, it shouldn't reload between navigation.

I think most other sites that have chat just have it as a separate page or whatever.  I personally am pretty flexible about where to sit in chat at, I just prefer to keep the people that we can together. And I am fine with IRC since I prefer to keep img links not embedded and avatars off.  Discord is fine for now since it's got most stuff, but I'll probably hang around in Paul's chat until it dies.

Chat is embedded at the bottom of DoxPhile forums, and can be used from the forums or as a separate page. Also, we have great smilies.... Login and type "cardboard" for example.

I never get booted from DoxPhile chat. There are the rare instances where the server freaks out but you don't get booted for being idle

Mobile devices will get booted due to the way they suspend the browser process in the background.  I have seen (and been seen) idle for days on end without losing connection when leaving the browser open at the office over the weekend.

Yeah I usually log on with a mobile device. he most extreme example of this that I can think of is when esteban gave one of his kids his cellphone, and it was scrollwars for an entire weekend.

I am in all of the chats, but got a warning from IT not to be in IRC chat due to security reasons? Why would that be? Anyways, no problems with DoxPhile and Discord - and I recently found settings in both to remove pictures and condense the text so it looks just like IRC and keeps IT and ME happy

I think the idea behind tcaud's original post wasn't that the Discord server needs to "represent" this forum, but rather offer a nice startup Discord community tailored around discussion of the PC-Engine / TurboGrafx.

That's cool if there is another Discord server already setup for this and if it is thriving, then perhaps that's the way to go. We couldn't find one which is why we made our own. This is mainly in response to how well the PC-98 Discord Server has taken off with gathering a large following of interesting members with many available skillsets.

In any case, that was the point of this was to try and gather members who might be interested in chatting over Discord. Not all of us have the time for forums anymore, but find it easier to just hop over to see what's cooking on the Discord server.

If anyone happens to be a member of the other Discord server for PCE-FX, please let us know the link to that communtiy so that we can check it out.

Mostly people angry about gouging or talking about the trolls that frequented the forum. I do remember folks asking why you never came to chat. A few people would make grumpy old man comments but I always figured that was just your sense of humor. A lot of times, people gave props to your music or if your name came up regarding a comment thread it would be about "Zeta's Sick Burn!!". Now we know how you feel, I guess.

It was really helpful for doing on-the-spot diagnostic/repair work. I cant tell you how many people I would interact with, new and old, about broken consoles. That still continues in the other chatrooms and has been a real boon for anyone who is trying to fix a beloved console.

You were/are always welcome, man. Even if you think we're mentally 11 year olds.

Like I said, I only used it two or three times so I don't know WTF was said. I just noticed a few punchlines I didn't have the background to understand but they were clearly aimed at me. I don't really care. All those assholes are probably gone now anyway.

I haven't used any kind of chat since forever. I understand the appeal, especially with anything technical, but for most stuff I do here...frankly, the forum moves fast enough! Although my typo tally would suggest otherwise, I do like to put effort into my posts. More than "lol" anyway. Also, chats are nearly goddamded impossible to parse unless you live in the thing.

I just question the existence of 3 PCE forums, and multiple chats, some of which not everyone is even aware of.

Look at the example of T2KFreeker.   Because that was all secluded to one chat, an entire forum of people were unaware of some shit that went down. 

PCEFX is the premier PC Engine forum/community site.   This is where pretty much all of the magic originated from.  This is where the most users exist.  It makes sense to have a chat *at the top*.

What doesn't make sense is continually forking off other chats/forums for this community.    It's like how the Facebook thing became a hot mess because everyone and their goddamn mother wanted to make a group.   We ended up with a sprawled out shitshow of morons.

and what also doesn't make sense is shit like what you're doing, which is basically just being a dumbass that isn't even trying to pay attention to the topic/point to realize it actually makes some sense because you're too busy doing your "omg I need to yell at Arkhan" thing.   Get over it.

If they had a Discord thing jammed into the top of the forum, that would be cool.   It's likely a pain in the ass though.  Much more so than a small IRC widget, or the OG Shoutbox widget, really.

The perk to IRC is you can just enter a nick and enter.   It's not actually tied to your forum stuff

I'm betting they saw IRC related words in their web monitoring and shit their pants.   The odds of an SSL chat over port 6667 doing anything to their network is pretty slim unless you're dumb enough to start doing DCC gets from randos and running pictureofdog.exe .  They're likely shitting because that port is also the port some malware talks through.   That doesn't mean you're going to get said malware using an IRC chat widget.

Those widgets aren't really that secure sometimes.  Hence the shoutbox being non-existent here.  You don't really hear of people crippling entire networks via IRC.   Those webchats are basically clommed together from PHP/jQuery/SQL/TalkingToDatabase(TM), and that's how we ended up with Shoutbox fucking us on this Forum.    I would argue that a defined protocol with years of vetting is a more secure choice.
