Quite a surprising amount for our plucky favorite console! Some games were better than others, some ports were better than others. Which comes out on top?

My favorite three are Outrun, WB 3 Dragon Trap, and Fantasy Zone

Gredler

Fantasy Zone was the only shooter I had on Turbografx-16 growing up, so of course I am partial :)

Psycho Punch

Close match between Harrier, Retfa Renrub and Bonanza Bros. I picked the latter.

Dragon's Curse is the best.

Sega published the System-16 game Cotton.
Justin the Not-So-Cheery Black/Hack/CrackTiger helped Joshua Jackass, Andrew/Arkhan Dildovich and the DildoPhiles destroy 2 PC Engine groups: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook, then the other by Aaron Nanto!!! Him and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together! Both times he blamed the Aarons and their staff in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner, never himself nor his deranged/destructive/doxxing toxic turbo troll gang which he covers up for under the "community" euphemism!

Digi.k

space harrier and wonder boy III monster lair.

Pretty sure SH was the first SEGA game I purchased from my pce while WB3ML sold me on that briefcase...

PukeSter

My bad, added cotton and monster land to the list

esteban

My faves back in the day *AND* today:
Wonderboy III: Monster Lair
Space Harrier
Riot Zone (j/k)
Dragon's Curse (I really like the SMS version, otherwise it would be higher on the list).

Dragon's Curse is the best quite easily, but the selection is a lot bigger than I thought, I didn't even know (or remember) that Riot Zone was a Sega game! I haven't played all of these games yet, but from what I've played the 2nd and 3rd have to be Cotton and After Burner II respectively, although I almost picked Outrun as my 3rd place, that was a damn good port, but I prefer it on the Mega Drive, AB2 on the other hand is quite a bit better on the PCE in pretty much every way...

nopepper

Dragons Curse by a landslide - it would probably be great even on the 5200 with its horrible controllers
Out Run - I just love how the soundtrack sings through the PCE's sound chip
Gain Ground SX - great game and a great port that always hooks me when I spin it

NecroPhile

Dragon's Curse, Dynastic Hero, and Riot Zone.

Voted WonderBoy III, V and Riot Zone.  I still wish I had my Riot Zone, loved the music on that game.  But are these really legit Sega choices?  They're all Westone, right?

I love the Super Scaler games but not a fan of the PCE ports.  I have a little bias towards Power Drift and then probably Afterburner is next.

NecroPhile

Yeah, they're developed by Westone.  Sega was just the publisher.

Yes. Companies publish different games all the time.

Bonk, Tengai Makyou, and the Thunder shooters? All developed by Red but are known as Hudson games

CrackTiger

Even Sega's teams were only teams of people Sega tried to keep hidden and eventually were allowed to first be credited with their real names, later allowed public tram names and then finally becoming fully independent.

All the big publishers hired Tose to make lots and maybe even most of their first party games, but still took all of the credit.

Nintendo didn't make Donkey Kong and spent years fighting the team who did in court. I'd still count it as "Nintendo" enough in cases like this.

Wait, there is a poll?

I didn't know. Doh!

Relying on my memory, I sadly forgot about...

(Thank you, nopepper, for being a fellow GAINGROUNDER)

I know folks might not think the PCE Gain Ground is anything special, but I really enjoy the overall experience. Admittedly, I haven't spent as much time with Genesis/arcade versions.

ALSO: I forgot about Dynastic Hero (necro's post reminded me)!

I think I'll have to visit this page in a browser and see what is in the poll and actually vote.

I like Gain Ground as well, but not more than the three I picked.

Many of the games in that list are not Sega games.

They are all "Sega" games.

Curious what After Burner 2 is like, I really enjoyed the first one on the 32X

I voted, sticking with my original three votes.

:)

ASIDE: I wonder when tapatalk will support "polls"?

I have almost bought Power Drift for the PCE OR Saturn many times, but never pull the trigger.  Zero votes makes me think it's been a wise choice.

I got to play a copy from Black Tiger, and its really exceptional for the hardware - though I don't think it outpaces the Saturn port or the 32x. It is really fun! The controls are not too shabby, which for Afterburner is pretty impressive (even the Saturn port has a few minor issues: namely being unable to use the shoulder buttons to control speed unless you use the 3D controller). Though the lack of buttons can be a pain.

I think Space Harrier fares the best given its purity (I've been meaning to get a card for myself). IIRC there are a few minor things lost in Fantasy Zone, but otherwise that is good too.

TR0N

I voted outrun since it's actually a good port for the console.

I voted Outrun as well. Somehow I like the PCE version more than the Genesis version.

Opethian

isn't the puyo franchise compile?

It started out as Compile, then they worked on these arcade games with Sega who published them on Sega hardware and a few years later, Sega bought the rights to the series altogether.

The 32x one is quite a bit better, but the PCE one is still a lot of fun, particularly if you're playing it on a PCE GT. If you're on a home system it helps a lot to be using a 3 button controller.

CrackTiger

Afterburner II PCE is even better using the Cyber Stick.

I feel like buying one of those sticks is equivalent to buy a SuperGrafx to play the exclusive games but I want it so damn much...

Is there any code snippets around? It would be fun to program a game that has Cyberstick support.

Man, that is some nice shaft work on outrun.  also uncomfortable use of the word shaft every 3 seconds.
NW: Hey, I made it on this psycho's Enemies' List, how about that ?? ;)
BT: Look at how the fake SFII' carts instantly sold out and were immediately listed on eBay before the flippers even took possession. Look at Nintendo's overpriced bricks. Look at the typical forum discussions elsewhere. You can't tell most retro gamers anything!

Winniez

All things considered I voted Space Harrier

SuperDeadite

32X Afterburner will work with the Cyberstick, very simple to make an adapter cable for it.
The cyberstick is really more of a must own item for Japanese Computer fans.  The console games
are just a fun bonus imo.

As for this topic, I'd vote Cotton, but Cotton isn't a Sega game...

Fantasy Zone, with turbo switches, plays so well on PCE that it's easily one of my favorite games for the system.

Though, I still have lofty dreams of getting the cyber stick and adapter for Outrun and Thunder Blade.
