Got a good deal for a 32x at PRGE this year ($20 from Castlemania games!) and looking for some games for it. I heard that Space Harrier and Afterburner are good arcade ports, but are there any other games worthwhile on the system? I see stinkbay has Kolibri, Tempo, and Knuckles Chaotix but those look rather pricey...

crazydean

I'm sorry for your loss...

I wish I could help but I never found anything good on it.

I would have said Chaotix, but personally not my thing. Like a stubborn dog on a leash.

Kolibri is also rated as amongst the better games for the system. But I never know wtf I'm supposed to be doing.

Arkhan Asylum

Get an everdrive and play them all that way.

None of the games are particularly fantastic.

They're all mediocre to slightly above mediocre.   Unless you can find them for like 5$ its not worth it, and the games you want to play are Blackthorn, and Kolibri, and they are both 80$+ or some shit

Not saying this is all there is to play/enjoy on the 32X. This is just what I have so far.

LostFlunky

Virtua Fighter is good, but, there are better ports out there (Saturn)... Mortal Kombat II is a pretty good port, but it is still MKII.  Doom is severely handicapped.  Virtua Racing is 'ok', again, there is a better port on Saturn.

I found Chaotix to be annoying.

Can't really recommend anything - I came to the conclusion I didn't need a 32X any longer several years ago and have never regretted selling it.

I got my 32x cheap with a ton of games.

I sold all the games including Kolibri

... Shove an everdrive in that bitch, play the same dumpster fire library, aw.

yeah.

Shadow Squadron was coolish.

so was WWF, but it's nothing spectacular really.

This is the best route starting out, then you can also try out stuff like Darxide.

Space Harrier 32X is awesome, and Kolibri is also fun.  I also like Metal Head personally.

The only thing I ever enjoyed were the Sega ports which IIRC were very good but there are way more ways to play even better versions now so it's not that impressive in this area anymore.

Was Chaotix the first sucky Sonic game? That would be the ultimate sucky dumb thing about the 32X if that's true. :)

Arkhan Asylum

Chaotix isn't bad it's just not a sonic really because you're playing push me pull you and shit.

Metal Head and stuff aren't that great compared to just playing Battle Corps on Sega CD

I'd say the best games to play are probably Blackthorn, Kolibri, and licking the power cord while the other ends plugged in

There were at least six(?) Sonic-style Sonic games for SMS/GG. Chaos doesn't seem very good or Sonic-like. Sonic fans have such random taste that some praise Chaotix while hating on Sonic CD.

NBA Jam Tournament Edition is a pretty good port but if you have it for PS1 or Saturn already then I wouldn't bother

TDIRunner

Someone beat me to it, but stick with the Everdrive.  Games like Kolibri, Knuckles, Tempo and Blackthorne are a lot of fun, but not worth the price.  I was lucky enough to get mine when they were still cheap, but I wouldn't pay today's prices.
Maybe, just once, someone will call me "sir" without adding, "you're making a scene."

I think I'll just recommend an Everdrive. Have you seen these things!?!

Tempo, definitely Tempo. Fun. But.... the best game on the console... Spiderman Web of Fire. Get. That. Game.

Get the most expensive game in the entire library?  From what I hear to be mediocre?  That's a joke post right?

seieienbu

I assume he's joking about Web of Fire?  Obviously there aren't a lot of games to choose from but I would say that the best ones are Afterburner, Space Harrier, Knuckles Chaotix, Tempo, and Kolibri.  You might start to notice a trend here; with so few games people will likely gravitate to the few that are pretty good.  Then you have some alright games, then some awful games.

Shadow Squadron was kinda neat, sorta?  It reminds me of an attempt at Star Fox only worse but on 32X?  It's at least a bit of an enigma to me because I've played it a good deal but am terrible at it but I still slightly like it?  I can't exactly explain my feelings towards Shadow Squadron other than to say "It's bad but I like it anyway."

Similarly, I have a guilty pleasure for Zaxxon Motherbase.  I have odd memories of the Colecovision Zaxxon and how hard I found the game forever ago.  The 32X version is like, if you ever thought "Man, that Zaxxon almost had it; if ONLY it moved at like, 12 frames per second!" then Zaxxon Motherbase is for you.
Current want list:  Bomberman 93

BigusSchmuck

I thought about the Everdrive route, but at PRGE the one they had setup didn't seem to work very well with the rom dumps they had and kept on crashing on almost everything except for WWF and Star Wars. Great suggestions guys, I didn't think of getting one of these the past couple of years due to the price going upwards of $100 on stink bay, but when I saw it for $20 with the cables I said what the hell might as well complete the tower of power...

Medic_wheat

I think the latest everdrive works for 32X. Or it seemed to on a YouTube video I watched a year ago.

From a forum member here. Gaming Quaterly.

On a side note I thought a bare bones 32X with cables went for $20-35.

Granted I'd recommend a 3rd party power cable that allowed for powering the 32x genesis ands sega cd (based on model types).

Yes. You kinda need that if you're looking to power up that whole contraption. Genesis/Sega CD/32X.
Having three separate PSU's is a pain in the butt.

I have the Mega Everdrive, and it doesn't fucktard out on 32X games.

Sounds like bad dumps or something.

I have the Mega Everdrive X7, no problem with 32X.

On an unrelated note, I've noticed a slightly reduced picture quality when using the 32X. Anyone else have this issue?

Also, I use three power supplies to power mine. The only one I saw that has all three is like $60. Is this the one you guys are talking about or is there a cheaper option?

How do you have it hooked up. Are we talking just Composite here?

Not sure about current stock levels, but I got mine for half that from Retro Game Supply. Shipped from France.

I use RGB via the same cable with just an adapter to switch between the model 1 and 32X. This way I can take it off and don't have to change out the whole cable.

Wow. €20. That's a fair price. They're not in stock now but hopefully they will restock in the future.

ginoscope

I got a 32x as a trade recently for helping a friend repair one of his systems.  I just use an everdrive with it to try out all the games.

If you are into RGB I find that the 32x improves the video ever so slightly so that is probably the best thing I like about it.  I would highly recommend the cables from retrogamecave to avoid having so many power bricks.

BigusSchmuck

I thought about trying my luck and setting up the 32x on my Laseractive until I realized there wasn't an av out on the LA in order to do so. Would look pretty ridiculous anyway, but makes you wonder if the unit was halfway popular if Sega would've put out a device for it to work on a LA then you would have LA enhanced 32x games!

I see it's listed at $70 for that Sega Trio power supply. And that's excluding the shipping cost. For us international customers, they're asking $37 to ship one PSU.

Way more than some folks would like to pay. And I would agree with them.

Hmm..weird that it actually improves your video quality.

As for that power supply. $70 is crazy. There's nothing in that PS that costs anywhere near that amount. It's just a classic case of gouging because people will pay. I'll just daisy chain an extra muti outlet. It only needs to handle about 4A or so at 10V.

GaijinD

I got my 32x for free and still feel like I overpaid. That said, the only games I have for it are Doom and Star Wars Arcade. Doom isn't the worst port, but really, there are so many other ways to play it that are better. Star Wars Arcade is decent, but it's pretty hard, though it is the only console port of a pretty obscure game. Apparently there were barely any cabinets in the US, which is odd considering that it's a Star Wars game. I thought it was a port of the '80s Atari game when I bought it.

The way the 32X works is it takes the stock RGB video signal from the Genesis, does an overlay on it for 32X games (if needed) and then outputs that signal through the 32X AV out.  So it works as a nice filter for regular Genesis stuff.  The composite video out of the 32X is actually really nice and gets rid of the rainbow banding on the genesis signal pretty well in my opinion.

Yup, you'll need some sort of custom cabling as well but it's a lot of work for 32X on the LaserActive.  I've never tested if a 32X CD game would work though, hmmm.

Nope. That's the '80s Atari game. What got ported to 32x is an early '90s Sega Model 1 game. It's the predecessor to Star Wars Trilogy Arcade. This, not this.

That Star Wars game is actually pretty fun but not fun enough to warrant a 32X alone.

You could just play Wing Commander on Sega CD.   It's a better game.

Metalhead, shadow squadron, star wars...

I gotta say the most impressive game on the system is Shadow Squadron. I personally think it looks better than Star Fox but lacks that game's charm and atmosphere. If you enjoy Wing Commander and Colony Wars-style games you'll enjoy SS at least a little bit.

My biggest gripe with the 32X is its video output. Even if you have an S-Video modded Genesis you'll still be stuck with Sega's horrible composite output as your only option. I'll have to ask some of my friends to see what an S-vid mod would entail on the little mushroom.
