while some of them are somewhat accurate, some are completely wrong.

the lesson? Don't prognosticate; people 30 years later will make fun of you :)

Aside from the one about adventure games having boards and counters to help the human keep track of thinks (which is debatably wrong, but not totally unheard of) I think pretty much everything in this article has come to pass.

Not that it really went out on a limb to predict anything though...
IMG

Dark Fact

That little snippet was from 30 years ago? Holy crap, the accuracy in the prediction was astounding! It's almost like the guy had a magic crystal ball and looked 30 years into the future to see people with their Wii's and XBOX 360's. :)

LOL! Anyone notice that the little handheld game pictured in the article looks just like an etch-a-sketch? :D

Sorry, but I don't see your library card on the books of Ys.  Now, RETURN THEM TO ME!!!

CrackTiger

I can't believe how accurate that was, even without going out on a limb.

I think that the boards and counters deal might've been referencing D&D type pen & paper games. In which case, RPG's have fufilled that prophecy with maps and stats.

I didn't see anything even remotely resembling kids from the 90ies playing fighting games on a system with cartridges bigger then VHS tapes,or a game system that use a combination of  optical disc and games with credit card sized technology so all in all I'm not impressed, and the the fuck wants to re-inact Waterloo as a game anyway?

I wonder if that thing was even real to begin with....

Keranu

Man I just saw this last night before you posted it, it's really cool. I love the online play part where it shows kids from the future playing a chess-like gaming from around the world. The techno-psychic did a really good job on his predictments.

That's what the Sega MarkIII modem used.

But if Nostradamus had named the Nintendo Wii and described the launch accurately but said the system would be black, would that have canceled out the actually significant prediction?

They had phones back then, he could have said "using phone lines" and I would have been impressed.  There's nothing impressive about predicting that people in the future could play against people around the world, it's a logical step.

Perhaps you've never hear of WiFi, mobile phone games, etc.

Don't be a dick and take the wind out of this. It was pretty far fetched 30 years ago to think that darpanet would be public, yet that exact freak occurrence is the only reason a world wide web is here, and not decades off.

Wireless Internet still needs a hardline Internet connection to access the wider network, you know.  And mobile phone games are a joke even in countries with those fancy phones.

The whole antenna on a chessboard is still not the worst of the predictions in the image.  The fact that he assumed adventure games still exist as a genre, let alone require paper counters, is the funniest prediction of all.

I enjoy being a dick sometimes, sorry.

No, but if the Intellivision can do a 3D dungeon crawler and the Mark III has Phantasy Star, I could see them getting the homebrew treatment in the future.

I had some better pics of the Sega Mark III Telecon on an old PC, but am too lazy to dig them up.

Here's a few images and info in japanese-

Here's the Google translation of the description-

Basic the constitution, transmitter and the receiver of UHF. Because antenna connection is prerequisite, if it does from game machine connection of these days, either image is not clearing particularly, a little there is a white elephant impression. By the way, the type which this telecon it can pack and can connect seems that is limited to just MARK-III, perhaps, but the wrapping must be processed a little,... perhaps (the installation to of MASTER SYSTEM possibility,)

Sound familiar?

That link wasn't enough information for me.  :|  That seems like one bizarre piece of technology, much like the FamiCom stock trader.

I'm still trying to figure out how they would do matchmaking on that thing.  Do you enter the UHF frequency of your friend's Mark III on yours?  Is there some sort of broadcast mode that tells other Mark IIIs that you are available to play?  What the heck is the range on that thing?

I can see why this never was released in any form in the US, the FCC would have had a heart attack seeing the specs of that thing.

Dark Fact

Y'know, after reading over that little article again, I'm going to have to agree with GUTS here.  It does seem pretty logical that when you have a new piece of technology or craze come out and is popular enough to stay, it'll tend to become more convenient over a period of time.  Take the new Blu-Ray and HD-DVD systems for instance.  Right now, these suckers are pretty big (the size of the original DVD player when it first came out) because it needs a lot of air circulation.  However, over time, developers will find a way to reduce the size of the players where not only can air circulate properly but be small and wide enough to fit into a 1 x 4 slot.  It is common sense once you really sit down and think about what you just read.

With the Saturn Netlink, you enter the phone number of the person you're going to play and then their Saturn answers the call and you're hooked up.

Thats what I love about the Netlink. The DC's modem is useless for multiplayer now(does it system link?), but the Saturn's still as useful as it ever was(still useless to the average gamer).

Yeah, you certainly can.

Even though, it's been a good 6-7 years since I had my Netlink + Virtual On (and Sega Rally Championship), I've yet to play anyone over netlink.  I connected to the web once with it, but the browser was slow and outdated even back in '00.

Nevertheless, it still CAN be used, which is great.

But even for the DC, I've read that people have written codes/set up personal networks to make games like Phantasy Star Online and Virtual On still playable over the network.

I can still use the Dreamcast Broadband Adapter to surf for porn and make idiotic posts on forums like this one.

Someone told me that it does system link if you just tell both systems to dial zero, or something like that. I forgot the details. I should try this since I have two Saturns and Two Netlinks, but I don't think I have two copies of the same NetLink compatible game. Futhermore one of my Netlinks is the grey Japanese one with the card slot, and the other is the US one so its likely that even if I a copied a Netlink game I have it might not recognize the modem. I'm not sure how much different the modems are, but the case is totally different, the JP ones has a slot for Xband cards, and I'm pretty sure the US one is 28.8 and the JP one is 14.4.

Now that I think of it I'm pretty sure my girlfriend has a complete selection of US Netlink stuff.

Then there is the trouble of getting the Saturn POS cart slot to actually work...

I like my black DS, especially since the insides, that you actually see as you play, are nice and 'flat', unlike the ipod'y outside.

I just got a black replacement shell and chrome face plate for my Xbox 360. I was worried that it might look to glassy like the PS3, but it's actually even nicer than I hoped for, even though it technically has some of those sparkles in the paint.  :)
