I can definitely say without a doubt that its hard as hell. Sometimes that kind of difficulty and drive a person away, and other times keep them coming back for more. Just depends on how balanced the difficulty is.

I've played Image Fight, and while it was difficult, I was progressing, when all of a sudden, I got sent to the Penalty Zone after level 5, and then I spent about 2 hours trying to beat it with no success.

My psyche has been so scared from the ordeal, that I haven't put the game back in since.

First clear of 2013 ..... #20 Shadow of the beast

One of those games that I feel is in the so, so category. Graphics are good with nice scrolling and the animation of the main character is smooth; the music track is fantastic and is defiantly worth listing to outside of the game. Once you work out the order of item pick-ups (which is not too difficult to do) just take your time and pick up a few enemy patterns and you will be on your way to completing this game.

However I did not get the 'yes, done it' feeling when I completed it, just a feeling of slight frustration! Probably just a matter of a few more hours play and memorization of enemy patterns.

I hope that you're keeping notes (i.e. Walkthroughs, item/spell lists, etc...) for those of us who will follow your masterful lead at some point in the future.

@bardoly: sorry, not keeping notes on all games i finished so far. but they are not very hard to finish without knowing japanese. i can only read hiragana and katakana. thats perfectly fine to read most spells, items, equipment names. you can learn the hiragana and katakana system within one or two days. ;) but if you are still stuck somewhere, there are walkthroughs out there on the net for nearly every pc engine game (japanese and english).

just buy the book "remembering the kana" from james w. heisig and you can also do it. ;)
absolutely awesome. i try to learn kanji now and maybe in one year i can study vocabulary and can read and understand japanese texts.

also this year will be my thrid trip to japan.

#21 Legendary Axe 2 / Ankoku Densetsu

Phew managed to clear it!

Been playing this on and off for a couple of weeks. Don't know why but I struggled with the 2 climbing stages especially the one with the lighting bolts. Ahhhh lightning bolts just ask, took me ages to work out that they hit the conductors and as for platforms top to bottom in on easy move ;-) LOL

I found the mini end boss took a few goes to work out until I found a spot where it gets stuck in a pattern (as with a couple of others) not sure if this is cheating LOL. End boss was not too bad.

Enjoyed this much more than the first Legendary Axe as it was less frustrating for the most part.

On a final note, my thumbs hurt!

The secret to the first stages is when you loose a life/power-ups jump back to an early stage and level up.

However on the final stage you cannot do this, so remember to make a note of your level 4 code! Then you can use this and level back up.

I found I lost a bunch of lives on the last level because I was impatient and tried to rush too much! The level is still a bitch though and it is one of the multi-part ones.

This game was challenging, at some stages it's so freaking easy then you'll get stuck on the next one for like 10 tries because it has a lot of really cheap deaths. Interesting game though, worth a try for sure.

Been chipping away at this one for a while now since it has a save function. This is one LOOOOOOOOONG game. Very cool and very weird. I could see most people not liking it since it's very tough until you learn how to play it. For starters you probably want an Ave 3 pad since you will be changing your ship form a lot. You also have to get used to reversing your ship a lot. Definitely worth playing through though for the awesome full vocal ending track. I also enjoyed all of the in game music. Some stages are minimal space drone and the next level will be upbeat with some nice synth lines. The visuals are also very beautiful in some stages and a lot of attention went into small details. I found myself getting distracted by some of them. All in all I really enjoyed this one.

I kind of liked this game..... This is the first all Japanese RPG I've really played through. I wish the action was more engaging but unfortunately this game seems to be a lot more about the story which I sadly missed out on. Oh well it was still fun figuring out the menus and enjoying the nice colorful graphics, decent music and cool looking bosses. The ending has a nice full vocal track that was pretty good too.
