Pac-Land is a fun little platformer. I won it in an ebay auction last year and have had a lot of fun with it. The cheesy cutscenes had me laughing. The game has nice cartoony visuals, catchy music, and most importantly it's fun!

Any other Pac-Land fans on the forum?

I think I may have found some secrets, but I was never sure. Which ones do you know of?

it is indeed a fun albeit retarded game.

You guys do realize that Zeon is trying to prove a point here, no?
He failed miserably.  You see Zeon no one else is crying like you did.  The description is fine- it was never Pop 'N Magic Review- it was Pop 'N Magic Appreciation.  There were plenty of solid reviews if you cared enough to track them down- my own was right here on these boards.

Sin please stay on topic, it has nothing to do with Pop N' Magic.  [-X In fact if you check back there I already apologized and clarified my posts. The similar post structure in merely a tongue in cheek response to the initial few posts of the other thread and nothing more. Please keep Pop N' Magic out of it mmmkay?

I am being 100% truthful in everything I say in this post. I do enjoy the rather cartoony style of the game, the cutscenes are nothing short of being bizarre and hilarious. Besides, you cannot beat that pimpin' pimp hat Pac-Man wears. I would elaborate a bit on gameplay and whatnot,(which believe it or not I do in fact also enjoy) but seeing as everyone is happy with simply enjoying a game, I see no reason to bother.

Sin, if you have anything, be it positive or negative, to say about Pac-Land, I'd love to hear it. Otherwise I ask that you please stay on topic.

TurboXray

I berated my friend for actually wasting money on this game BITD.

spenoza

I like to watch people skillfully play this game, but I don't really enjoy playing it myself.

CrackTiger

Pac-Land was fun enough to fool around with whenever I encountered it as an arcade, but it really is more enjoyable as a console game. I wouldn't recommend anyone traveling back in time to pay full price for it over so many other Turbochips, but it's a game everyone should try today.

I won a US copy cib (including the outer box) last year for about $8, I was the only one to bid on it. :P

The controls certainly take some getting used to, but the game is pretty unique, both in gameplay and graphical style. I've never played any game quite like it.

I know what you mean spenoza, there's just something special about watching someone tear through this game, barely escaping death every corner.  It certainly is not a cake walk by any means; it gets really hard later on in the game.  ](*,)

One of these days I will beat it. Speaking of which, anyone here been able to complete this game? If so, how long did it take you to get good and finally beat it? Better question, has anyone been able to 1cc this game? I'd imagine that being quite a feat.

Arkhan Asylum

I beat it last year at some point.  It took a few hours, and I havent touched the game since

You are aware that you can change the setup- to make the d-pad move left and right and the button jump?

Quote from: Zeon on 05/20/2009, 01:33 AManyone here been able to complete this game?
I've beaten this a few times- I don't find it difficult- however- once you beat it it turns into Pac-Land PRO -- which I have not beaten.

Pac-Land is one of the bad games that I (grudgingly) like.  The tunes are grating and the graphics lack detail and variety, but I still find it fun dodging the ghosties with a fairy under my hat.

Same here, though I do find the later trips to be a challenge.  The PRO trips are absolutely crazy, so I don't expect I'll ever be able to beat those.

I got this game when it was still a "new release" for the Turbo. I fucking loved it back then, but it hasn't aged very well. On the other hand, the simplistic graphics were definitely a stylistic choice as opposed to being the result of laziness or anything to that end.

Anyway, I played this game to the point where I could 1cc the PRO game back in the day. I'm virtually certain I wouldn't be able to do this anymore, not that I've even tried in the past decade.

I recently picked up a copy from eBay and overall I'm impressed. It's a fairly decent arcade conversion and though its not the greatest of platformers its still fun to work your way through the levels.

From wiki regarding the arcade Pac-Land-

"Ever the pioneer in video game history, Pac-Man dared to do what few other games were doing at the time: scroll. When Namco introduced Pac-Land into the arcades, they preceded Nintendo's own Super Mario Bros. as one of the earliest side-scrollers in history. And Pac-Land was no slouch either, featuring parallax scrolling for some of the background elements, an impressive feat that would not become common place until the 16-bit console era began much later."

So- was this the first side screen scrolling platformer with parallax elements? If not- what was?  As basic as it looks now- must have looked pretty impressive when it first came out.

There were Atari 2600 games with parallax elements.  Jungle Hunt comes to mind.

For whatever it's worth, Wikipedia credits Moon Patrol (arcade) as the first.

That makes sense. I was dorkin' on Moon Patrol (Mame) last week sometime and noticed the parallax and sorta chuckled at it. I didn't realize Jungle Hunt for the 2600 had parallax.

Didn't Atari try to copyright parallax scrolling once?

oh yeah! the parallax on Jungle Hunt is pretty disorienting sometimes....
