Just got a sealed copy of Camp California, a game i've never tried before, and I don't know if I should just open the fucker up, or keep it sealed and find a cdr copy to play.

by the way some people talk about this game, it might not even be worth playing...

any advice?

It's one of my personal favorites but not a lot of people share such affinity. :) It's not a terribly easy game to play due to technical reasons rather than actual difficulty; it's clunky and certainly could have been done better but is in no way as badly made as Exile II. If I were you, I'd find a backup copy and try it out first. :) Also, Magic Engine doesn't currently emulate it correctly, so you'd either have to play it on a late version of 0.99 (even there it has a few problems) or on an actual machine.

 Why not open it? I mean you own it. What are you gonna do with if you don't open it? Sure it will maintane some sort of value if you leave it sealed and if some day you have to sell off your collection you would have that, but is selling your games your goal? I guess I just don't get collectors....I mean if I buy something, I am gonna use it. :D Of course conversely I am glad there are collectors so I can buy sealed copies of games....so its a double edged sword...

However more importantly, the way I understand it, Duo's don't like playing burned copies of games and playing them in the long run "may" even cause damage to your machine(thats just what I hear). Its a theory atleast.....
A dark tide will rise and she will walk again. He is coming.....

I've never played it but I'm pro-opening as well. Especially if the alternative means putting a cdr in your Duo, which is considerably more precious.

Does anyone know the relation between Camp California and Yo' Bro (hucard)? Is the SCD a sequel or the same game a la Bonk 3?

D-Lite

What you should do is find someone with an open one that wants to trade.
Check my site for Turbo, Neo, NGPC, and superguns!

well if it clears up any rumours, i've had a burned copy of dracula x since  like 1998 (!) and my duo still functions as good as always.

You should open it. The game is not worth as much as Magical Chase anyway. I once had sealed copies of Super Star Soldier, Bomberman 94, and Ninja Gaiden that I kept for two years. I openned all them because I hate playing them on my computer. Emulators and back-up copies are okay but it's never better than the real thing.

Both Camp California and Yo' Bro were developed by ICOM Simulations... probably part of the last few games that company ever made for a console.

It is confusing because if you look back at the old magazines (i.e. the announcements and previews of upcoming games), it seems as if the two titles were used interchangeably. Actually, it seems as if there was only going to be one game, Camp California on HuCard.... then at some point, two games were in the works, with the names and formats changing...

If I get a chance I'll see if I can find an example in the TurboPlay Archives... but most of what I'm talking about appeared in EGM, GamePro, etc.

I'd probably open it.

The two games are very different. Camp California uses Lil Bro from the Yo Bro game as a playable character, and other than the Beach Boys music and overall theme of the games, they're worlds apart (even in presentation; Yo Bro is top-down and Camp California's a side-scroller).

Kool, i didn't know lil Bro was in Camp California! And I must have been tired last night, because I didn't finish answering question! To add to what notveidt said: Yo'Bro (HuCard) is like a poor-man's "The Zombies Ate My Neighbors" (but you're on a skateboard). I've never played Camp California, but it is a side-scrolling platformer.

I believe that ICOM initially started out to make one game, but then fell in love with Lil Bro and decided to make two games that capitalized on California and its pop culture.

What I really liked about Camp California is that each character is completely unique and perform differently in specific levels. Of course, once you get Screech...well, the other characters just seem so...useless. :D

Screech in the game Camp California! Or at least I think that's what he's called...my memory might be a little hazy but he's definately not as bad as the dork from that old 80s sitcom...

This doesn't sound half bad... I don't know why I always overlooked this. I even fast forwarded through it whenever I would watch the Turbo Duo preview video tape. Though it did have a (now) hilarious Spicolli surfer dude doing the narration for that part of the tape.

Turbo Duo PREVIEW TAPE!?!?!?

I must know everything about this tape! How and when did you first get it? Do you still have? If so, would it be possible for you to make me a copy if I sent you money for shipping plus maybe a buck or two extra??? Or if you have a video card could you rip it to your hard drive and upload it??? And I must hear the Spicolli-like surfer!

Maybe I should have said promo tape. NEC/TTi used to send out these things, which is how I got it. The Lords of Thunder tape available on this site was I guess the third tape (they never sent me any more after the first two). The first two are pretty similar, and they are the same tapes you would see playing on the  TV in Toys R Us. I'm not sure what the difference between them is anymore, but I know the second one is much shorter and uses mostly recycled footage from the first one. Aaron must have avi files of these, because you can see part of it in the third episode of PC Engine FX TV. Also the American commercial for the Duo somewhere on this site (maybe in another ep?) probably comes from the tape.

I've never tried to rip a vhs tape before but I'd love to learn how. I have no idea if I can do it. I know I have a TV out on my video card. If not I can dub the tapes (I think) for you or anyone that wants them. Preferably someone who can rip them to avi for posterity.

Camp California is on there, Shadow of the Beast, all the earliest SCDs. They came in plain white sleeves- no cool art unfortunately. Mostly its a silly sales pitch as you can see in the third TV ep on this site. Later on Nintendo sent me a tape for Donkey Kong Country; so I guess the Duo started a trend!

Woah, calm down.

I can send you a copy on dvd, vcd or svcd.

There's a lot of other noteworthy stuff on it.

Gunbout and Falcon look awesome and had me wondering why I hated them after renting them back in the day. Then I booted up the roms and was reminded. The Turbo video uses PC footage, even though it's one of the few times that It Came From The Desert was previewed with actual Turbo content.

You get to see a kid rockin' out with his Turbo CD discman and jumping around trying to beat Turbo CD System Card on his Turbo Express.

Its actually pretty good and proffessionally done for its time.

Its WAY better than the budget Lords Of Thunder promo video(which I can also send you if you want).

Its not irreplaceable, so if you care about the game at all, and don't plan on completing a sealed Turbo Duo collection within the next few months, then go ahead and enjoy it.

I have a sealed cop of Darius Plus that I plan on opening as soon as I have time to play it for real(need another 6 button pad with slo mo).

Excellent! I can take any format, so you'll probably want to send a VCD or SVCD since it's cheaper to use CD-Rs. What's the difference between VCD and SVCD exactly? If it's possible, could you fit all these promo videos on one VCD/SVCD? I would be greatly thankful if you could send them to me! By the way, I have downloaded the Lords of Thunder promo off of this site before and get a kick out of it every time. I know I will enjoy these videos very much :D .

I remember hearing about a few tapes or at least promo vids of some kind.  I wasn't lucky enough to get any but IIRC I saw one with LoT in it.  It was showcasing the Super System Card and how it would revolutionize gaming and lay waste to everything. hehe.

It's been a while since I thought about it, but I used to have a couple of tapes that had some game commercials on it.  It was PCE mostly, but a few Neo Geo and possibly MD stuff.  Unfortunately I can't remember where they are or even if I have them or not.  Kinda sucks because I finally have a setup to transfer video to my PC. :(

Yeah, I had one of the first (if not the first) TG-16 commercials on a tape (I had recorded G.I. Joe or Transformers, by dumn luck the TG-16 commerical was on there).

Anyway, this commerical is not archived here at pcefx.com, unfortunately. I know I foolishly threw the tape away ages ago: every time I moved to a new apt., I would get rid of a box or two of my junk.

I know what you mean.  The game commercials I have (or had) just happened to be on during whatever show I was recording.

What sucks is I've misplaced a few of my PCE CDs and a SuperGrafx.  How the heck can you lose a SGX?  I think it's in storage, but that's like half way around the world so I don't know for sure. :(

Keranu

Pop open your car hood and see if you replaced the Super Grafx as a car engine.

During my last move I figure a good 2 dozen or more Turbochips went missing, among other things. I've managed to uncover several during recent un/repackings of boxes, but it looks like a box or two went missing during the move.

I recently decided to pick up the last few Turbochips I need to complete the set and found that I only have about 2/3rds of them now after an inventory.

I'm also missing severals Turbo/PCE hookups and accessories.
