Does your spouse/other half except your gaming ways?

Yes

No

Sparky

Always fun to hear what the other halves think of your gaming/collecting ways.
so lets hear what they have to say and a poll to boot.

This might have been done before but hells new year, maybe new women in your life :P
i will post soon... my prego'd wife needs me !!!

Joe Redifer

Most of the time. She sometimes gets jealous that I don't spend 100% of my free time with her. Heck, I'd be jealous if I weren't always around me, too! But since I got her Tetris for the GBA, she's been fine.

My gf will say "you should buy this game so we can play together," and I fall for it every time. I get the game and she will play with me, for about 10 minutes and then never want to play again. Then I am stuck with a bunch of games I would never buy and she will never play again...

Anyway, she let's me play a decent amount, but a few more hours a week would be great!

Sometimes.

For example, my brother got rid of his mint condition Sony Wega CRT and I told him "HELL YEAH!" I want it for my old consoles. My wife, however, doesn't understand why I don't prefer playing on the plasma/LCD TV's we have.

Sure, I've explained the reasons, but since we don't have room in our house for an extra CRT, she feels that I am being a bit too finicky.

My plan, though, is to put the CRT (which is currently in the garage) on a rolling cart in the guest room closet. Of course, the TV's been sitting in the garage for months now.

My GF tends to get annoyed whenever I get new stuff in the mail, but she's alright with my large collection and she occasionally plays games with me (we usually play Mario Party 6 on the GameCube).

my wife is 100% supportive of my habit :P and actually looks at my want list and has found and ordered games for me without me knowing, on her own to boot!!!!! also we do play together, but i have to set up a gaming TRAP for her...

this is how it works....

1. Turn on the system with a game you think she would like but has said she does not want to try.
2. Get it all set up so all you have to do is push start.
3. Now walk away from the system, you suddenly have some stuff you have to do in the basement or you have to go to the corner store.
4. return with in 15-20mins and quickly make your way to the game console you left alone
5. If she took the bait you will now be able to comment on how good she is and mention there is a 2 player setting.
6. Enjoy the game together :P

now with her being prego'd she has not patient for anything, especially my gaming so i stand back at least 5 feet and agree to everything.

gaming survival!!!!

ParanoiaDragon

My wife was raised on Mario, Dragon Warrior, Zelda, etc. & plus she tends to play games more often then I do! So, yeah, she's fine with it. I even got her into the Ys & Suikoden series. She seems to be anxious about playing new games in those series! She also loved Dragon Slayer: Legend of Heroes & wishes someone would translate the 2nd one! :D

I forgot to mention that my wife still can't resist Ms. Pac Man in the arcade. Neither can I.

My grilfriend supports my habit. It's a pretty sweet deal for me as she buys me games regularly. In fact, she works in the videogame department at toys r us; that is part of what attracted me to her! lol. Yup. She owns the wii, with a bunch of games. She also has some retro stuff like toaster nes and oldskool gameboy.

My wife doesn't mind and will even play some occasional games. Granted, I haven't made many mega-expenses lately, but that's mostly due to mortgage and interest more then the wife. ;)

In her words,

"The basement is all yours!"

And she was cool (actually excited) when she came home to find me with a Mortal Kombat 2 arcade machine halfway down the stairs!

My wife doesn't mind the gaming stuff. She will play some games with me once in a while. Usually they are things like rock band and mario though. Better than nothing. But once in a while she will complain about the amount of money I spend on the stuff.

Good thing is she is letting me build a mame arcade once we move out of the condo and get a bigger house. Once I show her space invaders, she'll be hooked. She's a big dork like me.

Yeah, she accepts my gaming. She always knew I was into videogames. She just didn't know how into them I was until we moved in together. When she saw all my systems and games, she was blown away. We ended up dedicating a whole extra bedroom to all the classic games. We took the sliding doors off the closet, and built a huge shelving unit. The very top shelf has some of the systems on display, ready for me to grab whichever one I will play. A bunch of cubbies under them full of all the games. She accepts it, but doesn't always understand why I would play a game like Star Tropics or Ys or any other old game when I have games like Modern Warfare 2 or Mario Bros Wii or other new games to play. She especially loves the Virtual Boy in 1 corner of room, and thinks the Turbografx 16 with the TurboCD attached looks extremely weird.

Some nice stories to go along with how you guys voted! Definitely liked the wife coming home and being halfway down the stairs with a Mortal Kombat cab haha! =D> My wife accepts it and does buy me games. Luckily she's not really into the new games and prefers the old school games. I was rocking out Ys Book I&II and she told me she loved the music. She also thought it was a weird way to play a game running into people. I told her "don't knock it till you try it!" Now I can't get my Duo back! :| We also have some nice Bomberman bouts. The only sort of new games she plays is the DOA games if you can believe it. She's a hell of a lot better than me at it, that's for sure. Now if I was going out and buying arcade cabs and other expensive stuff then it will be a whole other story altogether.

Sinistron

The wife bought me Dungeon Explorer II, Dracula X, and others- so yes she is very supportive- very supportive of everything I'm into and busy with actually.

There was a period of time there in which the whole family was hooked on Bomberman. We would spend time in front of the TV blowing each other up. Such fun! We haven't done that in a while. My wife will usually purchase a game as a gift for me around birthdays and such, so very understanding.

Great thread Sparky!

Overall my wife has been supportive of my videogaming, even doing camera work for my clears! She's planning on getting me Drac X for my college grad gift when we find a good copy and when we have enough money.

We play a lot of games together. She loves Mario games as well as light gun games. We're currently working on New Super Mario Bros Wii, though we haven't played it in the last few days as I've been wrapping up a whopper of a PCE clear....

~ Edit ~

For some reason I would love to hear some horror stories from those who voted "no"

Well, here's a story from someone who voted "sometimes"...

I have really nice CRT televisions (Sony, 19", 27", 25") and I want to keep one in the house for the older consoles. The problem, of course, is that we have upgraded to new plasma/lcd televisions, and there really isn't any room for a big old ugly CRT. So, I was keeping the 27" in a closet in the guest room, which was great, until our guests needed to use the closet... so my wife moved all the tv's to the garage.

It is cold in the garage.

So I've been using an LCD tv to play games for the past few months.

SOLUTION: I'm going to get a rolling cart for the 27" CRT, clean out my own closet, and store the tv in my closet. To make things even sweeter, I am going to install speakers + subwoofer on the cart. Of course, I'll lose some room in my closet, but, honestly, I was being really inefficient with the space anyway.

Now, how long will it take me to clean out my closet and put my plan in action? Hmmmmmmmm....

Ahhhhhhhh...the things we do when we're married to get our gamming addiction on. :) Good luck on the project. I'm lucky enough to have a room to do whatever I want. It's the "man" room I guess. I have my drumset and violin in there as well as my lovely standard TV with the Duo hooked up. I also have it as my work office for my freelance 3d work.

What about converting the garage into a classic gaming den as a plan B? You could throw down a nice shag carpet, possibly a sofa.... maybe even a refrigerator....??

That would be nice. Unfortunately...

DEATHLY HOT + HUMID in summer, ICY DEATH in winter.

The summer is the worst, believe it or not. I can deal with the cold.

But, the real reason I can't convert the garage is because I use it as a woodshop and it is dusty, dirty (there's no way to keep it safe for electronics, I store everything in sealed bags to keep the sawdust out).

Sometimes she does. Like when i try to sell she gets mad at me cause she knows it took me alot of time and money. Then there are times when she thinks i spend too much time or get mad because i spent xx amount on stuff.

My g/f falls into the doesn't care, but she probably doesn't realize sometimes I'd rather be playing say Ninja Gaiden NES then having sex again. She likes some games too, which is cool, but completely opposite stuff that I do (Sims, why?), so the only thing we have ever played together was Guitar Hero. She doesn't know how obese my collection is though, so if I ever let that big fat kid out of the closet, that could scare her.

(1) Can you (come close) to beating Super Pitfall (NES)?

I had to vote no... Over the years she has:

- deleted my lvl 33 character on Everquest... (long before the first expansion... weeks and weeks of playtime at the time...)
- made me throw away my Atari 800XL and accessories...
- made me promise to throw away my Commodore 1702 monitor... which I pretended to do while I moved it to the attic for a while... I'll keep the promise, I swear, but not today.
- complained non-stop about my collection and how much money I've spent on it... never mind that I've funded it nearly 100% by doing repairs, mods, and ebay sales. (ohhh! and funded her anniversary present this last year doing the same, heh)

Any gaming I get in now is usually at the expense of sex, for anytime from a week to a month. She can really hold a grudge, so I try not to get caught.

It probably sounds more horrible than it is... she really is my better half... pulls me out to parties, forces me to vacation (most recently to Vancouver, BC for the olympics), improved my dress and hair styles immensely, takes great care of my kiddos, makes great meals when she has time, works diligently to keep the house tidy, and loves to lay in bed watching star trek and just about any other sci-fi series.
