I don't see any reason to suspect that any of those combos wouldn't work.

Unless I'm forgetting what the X1 Twin is, it can't play CDs at all, just HuCards.

Othello IFU+PCE+TGCD2 Rare (show off)   Technically, Othello can play with all of the IFU combos, but there’s got to be a limit…
Personally I love the Othello combo best.  When I play that I feel safe too, since the JP IFU is feeding less volts required to the TG16.  The otherway around, seems like the Hammerhead IFU is feeding more volts needed to the PCE CD.... so I've never wanted to try that.

OK, I thought the X1 Twin had a CD-Rom drive.  It does appear that it was just a dual floppy system from this auction link..

Not without a lot of soldering. It would be like hooking it up to a Shuttle. Its possible, it think, but not without a lot of work.

Ok, another piece of hardware, this time US Third Party...

Can anyone confirm the existance of a Beeshu Zoomer Wheel for the TG16?

Here's a pic of the NES one:

IMG

I was looking through the July 1990 issue Video Games & Computer Entertainment and an ad for "The Ultimate Game Club" lists a "Zoomer Wheel" as a TG16 accessory for $39.99 used and $49.99 new...

The TGCD system was listed as $389.99 new at that time and the Turbo Express wasn't yet available.

Here it is.  This is the test print that I just ordered.  Hopefully I will have the poster in a week or so.  It will be about 24"x40"

Before you print this thing, did we ever figure out if the TG-16 and PCE core systems can use any of each other's "boosters"? I'm sure it would look horrible, but I always wondered if you could shove a Core Grafx into a Turbo Booster Plus, or something like that.
IMG

henrycsc

I can confirm that these combos don't work.  The interface between the Japan & US is a slightly different shape.

Also, the PCE is slightly thicker than the neck of the TG16 - it barely fits into the booster's slot, but you would really have to force it in place if the interface did work.

OK, good to know. I've always wondered about that.

I find it odd that you are leaving out the Boosters. I mean, sure, they aren't very relevant, but they are official 1st party devices that sold in decent numbers. Also, you were asking about the Zoomer, which is beyond irrelevant, if it exists or not.

Hence the "with a mod"  --  My point is that I am trying to stick to just using unmodded hardware that you can connect directly between components.

We discussed earlier if the LT-to-SCD2 adapter could be hooked up to the IFU-30.  Once it was determined that it would need a physical modification, I nixed it from the poster.

Yes, some of my setups are silly (psycho's briefcase for instance), but it helps illustrate how much thought NEC put into the expandability of the PC-Engine and the multitude of system configurations that the consumer had.

Accessories are another story for the poster.  I want to make sure that all released hardware is listed, but photos are only included for systems and for devices that allow the system to be expanded to add CD-Rom2 capability.  There are so many possible iterations with the other accessories included, that the poster would need to be a book.  In addition, finding photos of all the possible setups is not really practical.

If a setup listed in this thread doesn't make it to the top post, then it doesn't follow these rules.

My point of posting something like the "Stairway To Heaven" was that some evil genius probably could mod the interface and saw the "dome" off the PCE to possibly pull off making that combo work.  Hopefully if someone ever does, they know what they are doing well enough to not screw up perfectly good hardware just to see.

2 great examples of modded hardware that isn't included:
and of course the Region Modded options are now available as well.

There is one exception to this rule that I may decide to add in before final printing.  We'll have to wait and see if it does.

Does the LT/SCDR2 adaptor fit into the RAU-30 (it must do)? Then you have a whole new load of double ridiculous sets ups. A step too far really.

Can we not come up with a slightly more hardcore name for the stapler (LT - PI-AD18 - SCRD2), it is physically a good comparison but doesn't do the holy grail status any justice at all. The LT itself looks a little like a stapler on its own anyway.

Here are some terrible suggestions, but which are a little more glamorous than stapler: "Darius Crab Arm" or "Holy Grail Crab" or "Mecha Snapper" or even "grey dragon lord"! Something like that...your names are way better....

And finally, if I may be so bold to suggest it, the sawn off stapler / dragon grail / whatever is still using 100% original NEC hardware unlike the (albeit awesome and impressive) hardware mods on the videos....

The whole point in naming it stapler was the fact that it is so impossibly hard to find.  Such an ordinary common name is the most unfitting for a holy grail, that's precisely why I chose it.  It brings the unattainable down to reality.

Yes, the RAU-30 setup works with the LT, and that is included now in the updated poster now that I have a good picture of that setup.  I called it Onager  (a much more regal name but a much more common setup... if an LT/SCD2 setup can be common).  There are only a couple of "silly" setups left that I would like to include, but I have removed them for now so they don't cause clutter if I can't get a pic.

Nect, I tried to adjust the colors of the border to more closly match the TG16 logo at top.  Hopefully that is going to work now.  I'm hoping I will get the test poster by this weekend.

....As far as the RAU-30 + the SCD/LTAd.... yeah good luck finding someone with all those pieces for a pic.  Technically, it would fall inside the guidelines of an unmodded setup, so if anyone has these two pieces and parts to connect on each end.... give me a pic and a name for the setup, and I will find a way to add it to the poster.... the more ridiculous the setup the better.... I would like to limit this to only one of these insane combos though (if I get any at all).

Since the LTSCDAd doesn't fit on the IFU directly, does it work on the tail end of the RAU?  This may be a case where the only option is to put the RAU on the tail end of the LTSCDAd, which means it would have to be a SCD2 setup....   Can anyone confirm this?

LOL! Connecting two adaptors together is pretty daft, especially as I have reasons to suspect that signal quality may well be lost in all those (32?) pin port connectors - my RAU30 bust pretty quick if that's anything to go by...
you mean connecting the SCDLTad to the the grey female end of the RAU 30, as opposed to the cheerful white 'faux pc engine' male inseminator end...?! I'm sure that would work cos the SCDLTad has a small 'male' end (!!) which goes up into the SCDROM2. The SCDLTad would never fit into the actual IFU 30 though cos it's too chunky, and would look absolutely awful in any case.

Yeah, it wasn't meant for the IFU-30, so I kinda figured it would have the same issue on the gray end of the RAU-30.  Even my craziness didn't come up with the stacked adapters, but in theory it would work... losses and all!  LOL

The poster came today... I'm a little disappointed.  The print on the silk turned out too fuzzy with the text and console images.  I'm gonna check around with different printers to see if I can get a reasonable price on a paper print.  If anyone has any suggestions on where to check, let me know.

What is this printed on, and why would you go with anything other than paper (except maybe Lambda Duraflex, which is expensive as hell)? I guess I missed that part of the thread.
IMG

henrycsc

The one I got is printed on silk.  It's a lot cheaper and worked great for other stuff, but it's just not good for text (the finished fot works out to be about 12pt for the text inside the boxes.)  You can read it, but it's not crisp - hence the reason I just got 1 test print.

The first quote I got for a paper would be $25 for a 24"x36" print, and I'm guessing it will cost a few dollars for me to ship, so I doubt many people want to pay $30 for a poster.  (The silk print I could sell at half that price, but I want it to be right.)  I'm going to check with other places and get specs for the paper and cost differences before I place any order.

I was thinking I would order 20 copies if I can get the final cost to be about $20. (which would be enough to cover everyone who has mentioned they want one + a couple extra).

Why isn't that Duo RX something wackier? An Express getting its signal from an LT (hooked to an IFU with the ROM ROM amp via the RAU-30) would be the most hilariously stupid thing ever since the LT already has a better screen.

Of course, you'd probably have to photoshop that...unless Tats wants to take a picture, or one of the very few others who actually own all that crap.
IMG

OldMan

QuoteTurbo Express + PCE GT Tuner + RCA to Miniplug Cable + PCE DUO RX + Rondo = DracX Special Huey:
If it's going to be on the poster, I think you should 'keep it in the family'. How about a TG-16 CD-Rom setup instead of the RX?
(fwiw, I actually did this once, with a video camera to make the rca->tuner connection, so I could tape a gameplay session.)

And if that's fair game, I'd love to see the briefcase hooked to the LT.....sort of the Japanese version of this.

As for the name, how about the 'Notso Portable'?

SignOfZeta

Since the LT fits directly into the briefcase like a regular PC Engine, I'm sure it will be on the poster.
IMG

henrycsc

Yes, the standard LT/IFU setup is already on the poster.
This is intended as the silliest getup.  I did this BITD just to be able to tell everyone I could play a CD game on the express.  I actually played about 70% through Drac this way, but it wore thin... the game's too much fun on the little screen.

The reason the setup was chosen this way

Express = Huey only!?  Of course....
Duo-RX = Last of the line for the hardware.....  :(
Dracula X = Often considered the system's greatest game  (Insert your own opinion)

What do they have in common?  "X", so that's why I chose them the way I did.
Maybe not as fun as Tat's version of the Drac X Special Huey, but I'm guessing more people have a Duo and and Express/Tuner than do any of the actual special hueys.

BTW, when I played through BITD, I hooked up the TGCD to the Express the same way.

You actually do get Audio and Video with the RCA to Miniplug, but of course, the express will only serve as a monitor, and you will need to use the controller on your SCD setup to actually play.

Just a novelty, but then again, so is the poster!

I'm going to remove the "system card" for the PC II

I can't confirm that this system is compatible with a CD Rom, but the image on the box shows a system card in the unit.  I would think the PC Boy is a brother to this unit and that one is 220V - wouldn't that make it incompatible with the IFU-30?  Not to mention, this is probably PAL as well.

Isn't there a similar issue with trying to connect a PAL/220V TG16PAL to a US TGCD base?

Does anyone know if the electrical or broadcast issues would for sure eliminate this possibility?

I'm also trying to do some final cleanup.  I will be adding the LD-ROM2 logo since they are part of this family tree.  I used the text on this manual image for the NEC Laseractive logo - anyone know if I am way off on this one?

One of these days, I want to get an "upright vacuum" setup (SuperGrafX + Jp SCD2) with a duo tap, two NEC Ave 6-button pads, an Arcade Card, and a PCE flash HuCard... my life would be complete.  :p

henrycsc

Yeah, that's a sweet setup.  The Super CD Rom2 is moving up on my want list as well as the Core Grafx II.

Jossshhhhh...Legendary TurboTrollX-16: He revenge-bans PCE Developers/Ys IV Localizers from PCE Facebook groups and destroyed 2 PC Engine groups: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook, then the other by Aaron Nanto!!! Josh and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together! Both times he blamed the Aarons and their staff in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner (extortion/blackmail!), never himself nor his deranged, destructive, toxic turbo troll gang!
