Quick question, received my turbo off Ebay and it's a bit scuffed up works great though. I was wondering if anyone knew of someone who custom painted consoles or if there was a good tutorial guide that someone had handy?

If its real bad, let me know, I think I've got an extra TG16 system that might be in pretty good shape.  Might be able to hook ya up with it.

Otherwise... isn't it Red Ghost that does some pretty sick system modding?  I hear he's VERY busy tho, so it would probably be a long turnaround time.

Paul

does he have a page or a contact number (member here I'm guessing?) It's not really bad bad, but it's not in perfect shape like I'd prefer. Of course I'd do it myself but I will always rather have someone else do the work and I pay them for it lol

look at the member list for "red ghost"  his page is on his profile.  I don't think you want his services for a beat-up setup though.  If it's in really fugly shape, you probably should just give it a good cleaning and use it to enjoy your obey time.

I find that this stuff is awesome for cleaning the dark colored hardware:

It won't take the scratches out, but it will really clean off the grime and "oxidized" look that the black plastics can get.  Use an old toothbrush to clean out the grooves and tough to reach places.  I've got a dirty TG-16 that I will post some before and afters for you.

Mothers is Awesome stuff. This method is probably the best, Paul.

I seem to remember someone with a silver NES, maybe Starfighter?

Random Thoughts on this topic:

I have toyed with the idea of painting a console, but after pricing out the materials it seemed a bit excessive. Anyway, I think car paint would work; you would have to scuff the system with 180-500 grit sandpaper, then apply a plastic primer for adhesion after cleaning the system, then apply the paint. If you knew someone with access to a paint booth, you could mask of the Duo and have him shoot it for you if he had any leftover paint from a Cadillac or something :D just a hair-brained idea, and who knows if after 3 coats whether the lid will shut correctly...

I contacted colorwarepc one time and they agreed to do my duo-r but those bastards quoted me like $300 !!   I was like for that price I can buy 2 more Duo-Rs.  No thanks.

OK, these didn't start out super dirty, but I have cleaned up some things that were.

Using Mother's Back To Black.  This stuff is really no effort at all.  Just polish similar to furniture cleaner (which may work too - I don't know though).

Wow, that back to black stuff works wonders, thanks for the tip!

Even though the title of it suggests otherwise, would it work on consoles that aren't black, like grey or white etc? It seems to be a standard protectant/sealer/moisturiser so surely that would benefit consoles of a different colour. I mean, it doesn't actually 'paint' or stain the console black, does it?

I have some more tips. Go to any motorcycle store and pick up a product called Plexus. It comes in a can and is a spray. This stuff is a miracle worker, protects and seals and leaves a nice coat to prevent further dirt accumulating. It does a FANTASTIC job of restoring dull/faded surfaces too.

Re scratches, one secret tip that I have is to use a ceramic cooktop cleaner. They are a cream/paste and come in a container that has a foam applicator. This WILL remove light surface scratches and will certainly help reduce deeper scratches, but it won't remove them completely.

I've actually read those posts and have heard of retrobright before. I haven't tried it yet as it is a little bit of work putting it all together. If/when I do try it, it will be on a white Japanese CD-ROM unit, I'll be sure to post pictures if it works out well.

tape off all the logo'ing and shit

Spray paint it with flat krylon.  The silky stuff!

I used to have a chrome Turbo Grafx 16.   I should do that again, lol

wow appreciate the amount of replies... that back to black stuff seems the easiest method and when I'm a bit more motivated I'll check that out lol I'd much rather pay someone though

I'd love to have my Turbo be a clean Silver

clean like matte-silver, or like HOLY SHIT THATS REFLECTIVE, silver?

Either way, a can of Krylon and some carefully covered Turbo Grafx-16 work will yield an awesome result.

Then you'd just have to go touch up the spots on the system that had yellow dots, etc.  unless you want them to stay silver too.

I think the only part I painted by hand on my chrome one was the power switch.
