How does everyone feel about the saturn? It's my 2nd favorite system of all time(behind the pce, tied with the nes). Great library of imports that are reasonably priced(radiant silvergun, D&D excluded). Granted most of the 3-d stuff was only OK- but if you look at it for 2-d it's one of the better machines out there.

TJ

I'm a big Saturn fan, lots of great stuff. As is typical with the last few Sega systems, it was great for arcade ports.

The Capcom fighters were always better on the Saturn than on the PlayStation, with bigger characters and features much closer to the arcade originals. Plus, with the addition of the RAM cart for some games, the games approached arcade-perfect (even though the RAM carts were pretty much only an import item, many US versions of the games, such as Marvel Super Heroes and Night Warriors, still supported it and would give you full arcade animations when in use).

And of course, the Saturn hosted a huge range of Japanese arcade shmups. Although some people feel Radiant Silvergun is overrated, IMO it deserves all the accolades it gets because it's fun, lengthy, and just an overall crazy experience. (Luckily I was smart enough to buy it when it came out, so I only paid $60 for it and not the inflated three-digit prices it's going for now!)

Saturn had some conceptually innovative games going for it too, like NiGHTS, Burning Rangers, and Panzer Dragoon Saga.

The unfortunate thing for Saturn fans now is that it's so hard to find any good US titles in the used shops -- everywhere I go has a few dozen sports games and a bunch of leftover Virtua Fighters or Daytona USAs and that's about it -- and you'll still pay $40 or so on ebay for a US release of Burning Rangers or Legend of Oasis (which happen to be two that I need, in case anyone's got some to get rid of).

Anyways, yeah, I'm a Saturn fan for sure, and I think it's kinda cool that many Sega consoles like the Saturn and Dreamcast inspire pretty fierce loyalty among their fans...so to paraphrase the Red Stripe beer commercials, Hooray Saturn! =D

GUTS

Saturn is fucking awesome, I've been a huge Saturn fan since the day I first played Panzer Dragoon Zwei.  Sega owns my soul.

lord_cack

Saturn is OK, Dreamcast is OK....never been a huge Sega fan, those systems didn't change that. But I respect them a bit more for those systems.

Thye just didn't have the games I wanted to play...they had some great ones though....
A dark tide will rise and she will walk again. He is coming.....

OldRover

I owned a Saturn and almost cried when I had to give it up. My favourite game for the Saturn is Dark Savior...if you've never played it, do yourself the favour and PLAY IT, it's one of the coolest game concepts I've ever seen (parallel scenarios).

Man I traded in my whole Genesis collection when I was a kid (around 40 complete games, some really good ones too) and got a Saturn with NiGHTS for it back in 1997. I first saw a Saturn displayed at some store and it was playing NiGHTS and I thought it looked AWESOME! However, I only had two games for my Saturn, NiGHTS and NBA Jam TE, and would rent games for it,  but my damn little brother tripped over the cables while it was hooked up and the damn thing wouldn't work again. I play my cousin's Saturn from time to time and enjoy it, but I haven't been able to play enough Japanese titles (but I have played some) to really enjoy it. I plan on getting a Saturn sometime and buying tons of classics for it because it is an awesome console, indeed.

By the way, Burning Rangers has a really fun concept, but I can't stand those 3-D controls. Panzer Dragoon, Fighter's Megamix, Dragon Force, and even Shining of the Holy Ark rocked my world though.

I've been collecting Saturn since it was released and have had several saturn consoles over the year...
hell I even managed to get hold of pre-launch prototype saturn in my ever increasing saturn collection that already have two CartDev Rev.B Dev systems as well as multiple saturn consoles inc. Sonic, Skeleton and etc.

if it wasn't missus I'd brought the rest of my saturn collection from  my old man's house but I only managed to brought the major ones leaving many titles behind...
still I got most of saturn titles that I want except the factory sealed Crow... :)

Saturn was and is top of my choice though I also collect other consoles as well - PC Engine, N64, 64DD, DC, PS, GB and etc, (not counting the current gen systems)

Ninja Spirit

I love my Saturn to no bounds. A system that suffered a similar fate as Turbo outside of Japan, high quality titles are labeled as "niche" and never come out.

As a matter of fact Saturn is part of where my burning hatred for the American game industry started.

Ninja Spirit

Anyone wondering what was up with the Saturn, here's the full story:

My saturn is near and dear too me, but I haven't played it very often due to having some bad cables. I tried my local pawn shop but they wouldn't sell me the cables without buying a system so I guess I'll be checking ebay. Anyway it really is a great import system. I would have to say Dragon Force 2 is my favorite game for the system. It improved so much on the first one while keeping its most endearing features. I do need to save up some money for a copy of D&D, it owns.

I have a treat for all the Saturn fans. A while back I stumbled upon a collection of the Segata Sanshiro commercials. These things are super cheesy but in a very good way. Anyway here is a link:

http://www.sega-saturn.com/news/091802.htm

Enjoy them they are great stuff.

Keranu

I saw all of those Segata Shanshiro commercials from here , funny commercial series! That link also has many other commercials for lots of other consoles. My brother recorded most of the commercials on two VHS tapes and we enjoyed watching through all of them.

That is a sweet site there man. I have a soft spot for video game commercials. Its been a while since I've seen that one for Link to the Past, its a classic. I'll probably spend all of tonight watching them. The sad thing is I don't see the Legend of Dragoon commercial on there. I remember seeing it like once (maybe twice) on TV. It was hilarious, and I was kinda surprised that it just wasn't clips from the game. I wonder if anyone else ever saw it..... I'm beginning to think I imagined it.

The Link's Awakening commercial for Gameboy is one of my favorites, along with a Japanese SMS R-Type commercial, and of course the USA Turbo commercials. Atari ones are my favorites.

Saturn is very good, lots of cool games! It´s the arcade-ports I like the most and some versions seems to be the best on Saturn. Like Street fighter Zero 3 for example, that game is one of my fav-fighters ever! I would not mind getting more shooters like Battle Garegga that Ive heard is one hell of a shooter but also very difficult. Nights Into Dreams is one of my favorite- 3D games ever to also on Saturn.

Ninja Spirit

I heard Saturn SFZ3 is really expensive is that true? I recently mysteriously lost my Dreamcast version.

Quote from: "Ninja Spirit"I heard Saturn SFZ3 is really expensive is that true? I recently mysteriously lost my Dreamcast version.

I just bought a copy of Saturn SFZ3 for over $100...

mamonohunter

I thought the price was going around 50 $ nowadays, but maeby the price is raising. To bad you lost the DC-version Ninja Spirit, it must be very cool to play it online and I dont think the Saturn version is sooo much better (just a little bit) even though I heard people saying it.

Ninja Spirit

Actually it's not so bad having it either. Lately I've been just playing it on Final Burn or MAME. For some godawful reason I have problems getting on Kaillera cuz I'm ready to exercise my Cody on some really good playrs.

IMO it's better than DC. If anyone can recall there's 2 different versions of Alpha/Zero 3. One that runs on CPS2 and the other version on Naomi.

Keranu

Cody in V-Ism can be VERY powerful. I haven't played fighting games seriously in a long time, but there is that famous combo you can do with V-Ism Cody, something concerning his kick move, followed by a jab (I think), his tornado move, and then constant light kicks in air.

It use to be cheap heck even common.

Then all of a sudden gamers got interested.... when they found out how good of a port it was.

Now the value of "SFZ3 for the Saturn" has jump like crazy.

Yeah I got a 3-on-3 Zero3 match with a V-Ism Cody from Japan. He made it through 85% of the video and unfortunately lost to a Ryu. But the guy was beastin' big time. One point there was 90 seconds on the clock, he did the V-Ism combo, and once he got him in the corner, it was Game Over. He juggled his ass with those kicks until the clock ran out. And that's when I said "I got to learn Cody"! Right now I'm starting out with A-Ism. One of the Final Burns I use has the cheat feature so I can turn some cheats on such as P1 infinite gauge and P2 infinite energy and make it into a practice mode

Keranu

V-Ism is such a powerful mode, but it's also very vulnerable. Keep practicing with Cody enough in V-Ism and you'll be sure to have lots of good wins if you can manage not getting hit while you activate V-Ism mode :) . Some other great combo characters are Guy and Gen, but they are very hard to master. When I practiced SFA3 for awhile, I was getting the hang of guy, but I couldn't come close to doing this shit I saw in a V-Ism Guy combo video where he would go on and on against the computer doing this combos that would never stop. It was the most amazing combo video I have ever seen, next to this KoF'98 combo video where they actually showed some infinite combos that are possible in the game. It's amazing because there are only like three known infinite combos in KoF'98 and it is NOT easy to do! It's hard to do just past two hits!

Dark Fact

The Sega Saturn was the greatest SEGA console ever made, period, in my opinion.  The games that were made for that system were absolutely incredible.  Not only did it play off the 3D aspect very well, it also had an excellent variety of 2D games with awesome crisp visuals and music.

The system also had a great variety of anime games like Magic Knight Rayearth, Cutey Honey, and Guardian Heroes.

However, the biggest reason for me to own that system would be for the Langrisser series.  Five games of medieval fantasy strategy coupled with excellent Urushihara artwork and mind blowing rocking music.  I would so get this system if it had all five games for it.

The Saturn is one of the classic systems I want to own next to the Turbo DUO and PS1. 8)

I'm a huge Sega nut - the Saturn probably being my favorite system. Anyway, I figured I would add some more to this list: Soukyugurentai, Saturn Bomberman, Elevator Action Returns, Baku Baku Animal, Battle Garegga, and Kingdom Grand Prix.

+1 for Saturn fan.  Probably one of my favorite systems along with the Duo and the DC.  Actually, those 3 are the ones that are hooked up to my livingroom TV.  They were all the "underdog" systems during it's lifespan... Hmm....  There's just something to supporting the underdogs, eh?

Being a sega fan, I just liked the Saturn for its Sega-exclusive titles.  VF2, Virtual On, Dragon Force, etc...

CrackTiger

The Saturn will always be the 32-bit PC Engine for me.

Not just because of all the great import niche games and it's underdog status, but also because it's home to games like Tengai Makyo IV, Saturn Bomberman and all those other PCE sequals and ports.

It's more or less my 3rd favorite console(tied'ish with Intellivision) behind Turbo/PCE and SMS/MarkIII.
