Hey guys, I've been thinking about picking up a new gaming shelf for my game room.  I want something that allows me to put my PVM and HD monitor on one shelve. So i took a trip to Ikea yesterday, and ended up looking at a Kallax shelve. I didn't buy it yet, as i want to do some measurements first. But out of all the units i looked at yesterday the Kallax looked to fit the bill.

What do you guys think of this shelve, or are there others shelves you think i should consider. Here's some pics of my current setup and a link to the Kallax.

Quote from: guest on 08/02/2014, 03:40 PMIs the shelf deep enough for the PVM?  More importantly, will it hold the PVM's mass?  If it is particle board or MDF, there is a good chance that it will deform over time under the weight of a PVM.
I can not emphasize this enough.  Ikea makes good but cheap stuff and I would be scared to place a CRT of any make shape or size on top of something from Ikea.

Ikea do solid wood stuff too id look at that. I had a very large crt on a unit from the hemnes range for years no problem.

Fidde_se

Ikea does make things out of solid wood that can take a lot of weight, the weight of the tv (flat glass 29") is 42kg and add 12kg just for the center channel, add some consoles and drawers filled with games probably another 20kg.

I like that one. What's the name of that model? Too lazy to look it up right now.

that one is nice as well. I really wish they would include the max weight load of more than just the shelves on the unit

I've been generally disappointed with Ikea furniture, all the stuff I've bought from there seems to fall apart, maybe I've just been unlucky.

Billy series is one of the best things ever happened gamers, it does'n matter what console you collect for it all fits in a nice way.

Hecks yeah, I love my Billy shelves. They're actually really sturdy, plus you can add those glass doors to mix things up a bit. I've actually had zero issues with the furniture I've bought from Ikea, although it's admittedly pretty much just been shelving & storage stuff.

johnnymad

Plan on buying a bunch of the Billy shelves whenever I move out of my current place. Until then, games stay in the closet. :(

Looks like they don't ship these anymore, so hopefully you have a store nearby. Just as well, Ikea only uses freight shipping anyway, which is $$$.

I do have a store next to me. Which one is recommend to lay horizontally, and hold a PVM, and a 20" HD monitor?

I use a Lack series shelf sitting on the floor with no casters in a couple of rooms. With those thick shelves, they're super-sturdy... I have a 65" TV sitting on one of them with no bowing whatsoever.

Unfortunately, it looks like Ikea is phasing this series out, but you may be still able to find them in the actual store. Here's a link to some pics I found online for reference (I bought mine in black, and they look great):

Munch, I've had shelves like the one you linked to in your OP, and I *REALLY* don't think that it will support the weight of a PVM.  Those shelves in particular are only meant to hold massive weight when used in a particular orientation.  If you load it down in the wrong orientation, it will literally turn into a parallelogram.

If I were you, I'd just start scouring Craigslist until you find something more suitably solid.

Word of warning on the Billies, guys - I bought 4 total Billy bookcases (1 during the first trip and 3 the next). Bought 8 extra shelves on a subsequent trip (2 for each unit since a DVD Case-sized measurement allows you to add bonus shelves), and the fuckers changed the measurements of the shelf pegs on me. I had to go through great lengths to get it all to work. So make sure that if you're going to invest in a particular IKEA shelving system, buy everything you need up front.
