When I was taking a look at PC-Engine Dev I saw that some of the guys there had managed to get Dragon Warrior working via emulation as a SuperCD.  I'm not sure if they already had plans to do so, but I thought it might be kind of cool to whip up a custom cover for the game.  Let me know what you think, whether its crap or good, needs something added, changed, removed, whatever.  I'm also working on a back cover and a CD label as well.  Your feedback is much appreciated.

Hey! That's pretty cool :D Can you make a back cover?

r_benchley

Yeah, I'm working on a back cover and cd label in addition to the front cover.  Everyone, chime in and let me know if you think there any changes that I should make.  Also, if anyone else is working on homebrew games or an emulated game like DW, let me know and I would love to work on a cover design for you.

I think it looks awesome. It'd be cool if Bonknuts & co. choose to use it for the finished product.

Any way to dot the I in Warrior with a slime from the cartoon or manga?

What? DW on SuperCD?

Damn, I'm out of the loop...

I've never heard of this project, but that cover is extremely authentic and period correct. Nice job. We'll see of its just a fluke or if you actually have taste when you show is the back insert.

I would change a few things though. First, the registered trademark symbol or whatever it is should go since its not found on very many things (anything?) from Japan back then. Usually though you would find "COPYRIGHT 1986 ENIX" or whatever in small white print somewhere along the bottom.

Also, I'd just use the Dragon Quest logo since that seems to be the official name in the English world now, and always was in Japan. I guess this depends if you are trying to make this look like a PCE CD, or a Turbo CD. You are using art that is from the Japanese release, but a logo from a (much newer) American release.

Also, the Dragon Warrior logo you have chosen is obviously computer generated. This isn't a bad thing but it looks out of place since most logos were hand drawn back then, and compared to the super cool FC DQ1 art you used it looks too modern.

Awesome cover! Totally dig!

Here's the latest revision.  It's a little bit closer to the original Famicom cover with the classic DQ logo and the Enix logo in blue rather than green.  Time permitting, I'll post the back cover and CD label later this week or early next week.

The hack/remake for PCE is based off Dragon Warrior specifically. I think CrackTiger was going to design a logo that said Dragon Warrior, but used Dragon Quest style font.

Yeah, that's why my original version used the DW logo, rather than Dragon Quest.  If anyone is interested in using my cover, I can easily provide alternate versions with either name, depending on personal preference.

ParanoiaDragon

Yeah, I'm pretty sure we've decided to go with DW, since it's the US version of the 1st game.  And yeah, Black Tiger is going to do the Title Screen IIRC.  I'm....not sure if we want to put our own group logo on it as well.  I do think Nod said it was ok to release it(of which, it'll be download only) under the Frozen Utopia banner, but, I'd have to check with him on that just to make sure.

r_benchley: Any good with 9bit color pixel art?

r_benchley

I dabble with it on my Mac using a program called Pixen, but I wouldn't call myself skilled with pixel art.  If there's something that you need done, I would be happy to give it a go, but I'm probably not your best option.

Ceti Alpha

The design looks fantastic and totally authentic. I look forward to seeing the remixed stuff.  =D>

If there are screenshots on the back artwork, consider one of them being the part where the dragon lord asks you if you would like to share the world with him, with the curser on the yes/agree option.

Not yet, we all have alot of projects we're working on at this time(especially Bonknuts, he's busy like a one armed paper hanger!).  I believe the NES version is fully playable on the Turbo CD, but, the remixed version still has a ways to go.  I know personally, I have songs to finish, & a few that I haven't started on yet.  I've mainly not been feeling well, so it's slowed down my progress, not to mention me trying to finish up the music for Mysterious Song.

None that I know of.  Tom was working on Castlevania & Mega Man, I think he found them easier to hack.

Funny I had one of my Dragon Warrior sprites opened in Tile Studio as I was clicking on this thread.

You can view all the remade sprites I've designed for this project here. I think I have the slight majority of them done, but I'll still need to go back and make different color varitaions of a lot of sprites that reappear throughout the game.

I think we're also planning on making certain characters in the game, that start out as bosses that later become regular enemies, to be a bit beefier looking then they're regular enemy versions(which is why I was working on boss music) :)

Thanks for the comments! As you probably could already tell, I'm aiming for a graphical update that is extremely faithful to the NES original, but with 16-bit style coloring and shading. The SFC remake did a decent job, but sometimes the shading was a little wonky and some enemies looked kind of silly compared to the original.

Not sure about the tile graphics yet. I'm really not comfortable making tiles myself, so I'm not sure if I'll continue to make attempts at that. Fragmare (from MindRec) was working on them early on, but kind of stopped. If there are any tile artists out there, feel free to join!

Keranu, I didn't realize you did that many sprites  :) Don't worry, I'll revisit Dragon Warrior but at the moment I concentrating on my real game engine. Something that I could legally distribute ;)

Keranu

No problem, I'll try to get as many sprites done by the time you start working on it again. Sometimes jumping between projects can be a good thing.
