2/13/2025: Localization News - Cosmic Fantasy 3-4!

Rather earth-shattering news in the PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 community: Cosmic Fantasy 3 & 4 has been officially localized to English by Edia 30 years later for the Switch! Hard to believe! I know their script quality is poor given the 1&2 port but still good to see.

Quote from: guest on 04/12/2015, 05:33 PMNah, I'd rather see a leather clad style Simon Belmont in there, like shown on the box art from CV1. Please neither the red haired fur guy from the PS1 CV chronicles, nor any of the later 3D Castlevanias.
I would support that. Or an Alucard that can change into a bat.

I've played Genji Tsuushin, and it was playable and super fun! And something with a girl on a stage with a camera man that was trying to take pictures up her skirt.
#3
Smash and bonk seem to go together perfect right?

I like an underdog, so I went with Bonk.

But if I'm honest with myself, nothing would beat Simon, Alucard or Dracula from Castlevania...

Any of the good side scrolling beat em ups from the SNES would have been good (King of Dragons, Magic Sword, Demons Crest, etc) I would have loved them to be 3+ player, and they would have been fun to use the TG turbo controllers!

Thanks! Good to hear that the caps are the major issue with it and that it should be pretty solid with them fixed! I like the look of the duo vs the regular system with CD, so I'm glad no one recommended trading it in!

My Turboduo has recently been giving me some trouble. I had it recapped and region modded last year by Keithcourage here, and it's been great. Gomola Speed and multiplayer bomberman are like crack to me haha. The sound has been a little "buzzy" (I cant remember when it started), but recently it has gotten really bad, so I only play on mute. Does this sound like an easy/relatively cheap sort of fix? I know the caps going bad affect the sound, but they're relatively new, so I was wondering if something else could be causing it? I've done some mod/repair work on gameboys/segas/snes, but I'm pretty wary of opening my duo. Since it's expensive, and I'm unfamiliar with it/how its modded, I'm unsure about what to do...

Also, I've heard Turboduos aren't the most reliable iteration of the system, so would you all recommend selling it and getting something else? IDK what all the versions of the systems are going for now.  I play it pretty often, and have several CD games as well.

The last new game I opened was Pokemon snap at my 11th birthday. Ah 1999

Enter me! I finally have a few weeks break for games!

I'm interested as well in all of it. I don't have the games and I love handhelds, so I've got to pick up one of these eventually! Pm me when you have an idea of what you want for it! :D

I have an old laptop that I won in a science fair that I use just for this! I use it to play Oregon Trail and this game where you have to kill all the mice before they reproduce. I feel like a kid again on it.

USMLE step 1 and trying to apartment shop. I live on diet red bull, french fries, and Tums.

Any other medical students/ doctors here?
#13
Can you use a tennoke bank card with a region modded turboduo? If so I'm interested!

I love the Martian Chronicles. I think the Sci-Fi genre is always appropriate after a brush with death, because it deals with things we're never going to experience.

It's one of his best works IMO. Lots of stories with lots of ideas to explore and think about. Or Dandelion Wine if you prefer to look in the other direction :)

General Gaming / Re: Sega Saturn

I feel like the Saturn is the TG16 of the 32bit era. Poor launch and marketing in america casing it to underperform, very solid library of games, great imports, and very expensive to get into now.

One of my favorite games ever is on the system: IRON STORM!

There is a thread  kind of like this already, but I wouldn't really call a lot of the games suggested english friendly. So I thought a new thread with some guidelines about what makes a game english friendly would benefit some people, like me, who are new to the PCE and want to know a good place to start!

Its in the sale thread because I have fat fingers and was trying to do this on my phone and didn't notice it was in the wrong place :/

Bonus Points for female protagonist! Double bonus points for Highkicks and cheapness!
#18
I was wondering if some knowledgeable people could suggest a few good english friendly PCE games for me to start with? The topic has been discussed a few times, but people seem to have varying opinions on how english friendly something has to be, so I'm going to outline some qualifications beforehand.

So here are the qualifications for me:
1) Game has to be PCE (Hu or CD), with not imported American counterpart
2) Without a guide, I should be able to figure out the controls and combat
3) The language barrier shouldn't make the game more difficult. (Like an RPG where I was given a clue how to proceed, but since I couldn't understand it, I took much longer to figure out where to go)
4) The general gist of the story should be apparent with no knowledge of Japanese.

Looking forward to trying out this region mod on my DUO so suggest away :D

What does cic mean?
#20
WOW! So nice! I want in please!
#21
Wow and no flickering! I need to figure out how to make CDs of these ROMs
#22
Did you attack it with fire magic? It's been a while since I played, it took me a while to figure out how to hurt him.
#23
I'm going to look around for a scan of them somewhere. I might try to adapt some from the cover project, but you're right about them being weak in the TG16 department. The Nintendo ones are great though. I'm about to make a batch for some N64 games. If not I'll try to get someone here to scan a copy. I printed this one and it looks great; thanks for making it! Now I just need to buy the game that goes with it haha.
#24
Would anyone know where to get inserts like this for other games? I would love one for ys 1+2 and one for cosmic fantasy 2
#25
I would love to enter! These raffles are so cool. I'm going to find something to raffle!
#26
I would like to enter please :D

My rich friend had one when I was little and I always wanted one. The HuCards were so cool. Fast forward 20 years and I finally buy one to try out some working designs exclusives. Turns out the WD games are pretty average among some other really great titles for the system. This console was, by far, the biggest missed opportunity in the US.
#28
Taken care of by a user here.

Thanks! Looking forward to some Japanese HuCards!

No love for Gate of Thunder?!
I'm trying to take a step back from shumps haha. I have too many on the saturn and genesis, and I'm trying to break out a little here. Buying a game that has a great platformer, a great multiplayer strategy, and a great shump seems like a good tradeoff haha.

Military madness (LOOOOOVE)
Ys 1,2
YsIII (LOVE!)
Cosmic Fantasy 2
R-type
Welcome, comrade.  :pcgs:

If you haven't done so already, put Neo Nectaris on your "To Acquire" list. No need to rush out and get it, since you should explore a variety of games.
I'm going to add it to ever growing list of ebay saved searches lol. Is it difficult to play if you cant read Japanese? I'm in the process of getting my system modded to play Japanese hucards, but I have no idea of which ones are worth importing for and english speaker.

Right now my to acquire list is:
Spatterhouse (+++)
Cratermaze
Psychosis
Gomola Speed
Gate of thunder 4in1 (+++)
Sim Earth
Blazing Lasers
Cadash
Exile
Bloody wolf
Caslevania X
Legendary axe
Neutopia

In no particular order, just as I can find them. I really want the 4in1 mostly for Bonk 2 and Bomberman.

I was led to believe Fantasy Zone was a sub bar shooter. I love it, but I'm a sucker for a cute-em-up.
#32
I've obeyed for a while and didn't even know it O.o

And I got through all 41 pages today haha.

Mine was Cosmic fantasy 2. The Lunar series is my second favorite series, and I bought my first turbografx in part to play some of the first working designs games. I love their translations and the games they selected to port, but I could not get into this game. Maybe I hyped it up too much, maybe it was just a rare miss for me.

Hey

Still new to the forum, so sorry if this is misplaced. I'm looking for someone to replace the caps in my turboduo and maybe do a region mod (I figured I might as well go all in if Im getting it fixed). I didn't want to PM a bunch of different people, so I posted here to find someone who's not too busy do do it.

It's in working shape as of today, but Ive been told its better to get it done sooner rather than later.

Thanks in advance!
Feel free to PM

QuoteWelcome aboard.  Make sure you get that Duo recapped soon, before the cap juice ruins something on the board.
Where is a good place to get it recapped? I would love to have it done, but I don't have the technical knowhow myself, and I don't know of any reputable places to have it done.

QuoteToo many new people. My welcome mat is tread barren...

piss off.

har har... i jest! Sounds like you got a killer deal on the turbo duo, and have some very nice games for it!  You should check out Ys IV and the English patch Deucebag made for it (just kidding, nightwolve! Eff deuce).  Just be sure to burn it at the lowest possible speed on the nicest cd-r you can find.

There is a ton of info on these forums. Enjoy your stay!
I'm going to have to try to burn a few games for it. I've had great luck with burning 3DO games (most worked), and terrible luck with burning Sega CD games (None worked). So I'll see how this goes when I get my hands on a CD burner I can play around with! I've been wanting to play the fourth one since it has the aspects from the first that I loved (the "collision" combat) and the magic (which is always my favorite part of a JRPG). Thanks!

Glad to see there are other new people!

Just wanted to take a break from studying and skimming the forum to say hi! Great site and resource for an awesome console.

I just recently started getting into the tubografx. I was a nintendo kid, but my (rich) best friend had a turbografx growing up and I was always jealous of it. The cards are so cool. I had kind of forgotten about it until recently. I've always been a big fan of Working Designs, so after reading about some of the cool exclusive games for tubografx, I took the plunge and bought a turboduo on ebay for 250$ with a few games. It was a good enough deal.

Fast forward a year or so, NO REGRETS. So many good games. I don't keep many in my collection since they are expensive, but I've sold some of my other games/systems to get more because I love the thing so much!

Right now I have:

Turboduo (No mods, original sound caps  #-o)
Keith Courage
Bonk
Alien Crush
Military madness (LOOOOOVE)
Ys 1,2
YsIII (LOVE!)
Cosmic Fantasy 2
R-type

I also just bought an extra controller, multitap, and extension cords for some good multiplayer bomberman when I can afford the 4-1 pack in disk. Looking forward to reading your posts and finding some great gems I've never heard of!
