RIP to BT Garner of MindRec.com... BT passed away early 2023 from health problems. He was one of the top PCE homebrew developers and founder of the OG Turbo List, then PCECP.com. Condolences to family and friends.

I am the one who noticed this :-". Maybe I should have contacted you directly but I wanted to make sure that I was correct in my findings. I didn't post here because its mostly dead  :-({|=

As the title. Swapped over all the main and RAM chips from a working original PC Engine and still no difference. Transplanted the removed chips into the PC Engine and it works.
Checked the cable between the boards for continuity and all is good.
Voltage regulator is outputting 4.99v.
I'm guessing that it is probably a via or trace somewhere, or maybe an SMD component, but everything looks okay.

Yes, just being a bit daft there. I was sure someone else must have spotted the difference in the 30+ years that they have been available.

I have just received another PC Engine (original) which has a chip instead of the oscillator. There is a footprint for the chip, but I have never seen one in place before, and I have bought and sold probably 25+ PC Engines.

There are 2 different motherboard versions of the original PC Engine. The original uses 1206 size SMD components and the revision uses 0805. The revision board also has a different ground panel underneath.
The area on the casing above the controller port is different too.
I am the first person ever to make these observations.

It is worth replacing them due to age, but the 4.7uF caps near the volume dial do tend to leak.
#7
Replace the capacitors first before you touch the pots or laser.
#8
The controller port in the Duo R is only soldered on the underside and the solder is prone to cracking. The only way to fix it is to open the console and reflow the solder.

Quote from: majors on 10/08/2018, 10:17 AMWow, three year old bump? I've never possessed and BB or BBII, but I have a Tennokoe 2 and it is pretty basic betty internals. I'd assume the same for the BB since the PCE itself is already generating the composite signal.
It isn't just a pass through device though. I have an AV Booster and the composite video and audio signals go through an amplification circuit from the ext bus.
I just wondered if the PCB in the BB and BB2 is the same minus the AV components or whether they made a whole new PCB for the BB2.

Probably broke of one (or both) of the clips that hold it in place?

If I can't get a PC Engine for a good price then I think it might be the final straw. I have been  :deadhorse: for too long now.

Other than flying over to JP, someone is gonna be a middle man, if not now, then when it was originally imported.

Forums do not count as social media? I'm not too keen on FB but you are limiting your buying options since a good number of ppl have migrated to it for trades and deals.

Unfortunately, as with other consoles, prices are jumping (unless you want an Odyssey 2, no one collects that!). You may had seen PCE's sell for 30 pounds 3-4 years ago, but you cannot time travel so grin and bare it. May I ask why you are looking for a PCE (RF, white, whatever) instead of a Duo or even a Core? I have a briefcase setup purely for when I support gaming events, I feel it has a certain ascetic and historical significance that can come across when one is physically in it's presence. My "daily driver" is a JP Duo...
Buying off an ebay seller means that they source the items from somewhere and then ship them to you, but buying from one of these yahoo japan agents means you are paying 2 lots of shipping and other fees on top.
I just like to know how much I'm paying from the start.

I don't do Facebook or any social media stuff, so that isn't an option.
I remember being able to buy an original PC Engine on ebay for around £30 including shipping from Japan, probably about 3-4 years ago now though. There were quite a lot of them, but it just seems to be boxed sets or already modified consoles now.
#16
As per the title. Nobody seems to sell them on ebay on their own or for a reasonable price anymore, and I don't want to go through a middleman on yahoo auctions to bump up the price.
Doesn't matter if it's discoloured, but preferably no cracks or bad scratches and no previous tampering.

Quote from: crazydean on 04/30/2018, 12:22 PMSo I landed my first office job about a month ago and they have free coffee! I've never had much use for a coffee mug in the past because I needed to move around.

Anyway, I've always wanted one of those sweet, black turbografx mugs, and I was wondering if anyone here was interested in parting with one of theirs. I don't care which game is featured on it.

Also, in case I don't actually find one, what are some suggestions for other game-related mugs?
The coffee is not free. You will pay for it one way or another.

This is the mmmonkey whose guides got me to attempt console modifications many years ago now?
#22
The screws for the Duo/R are torx 10, but they have a raised circular part in the middle.
#23
I usually remove SMD electrolytic caps by wiggling them back and forth until they break from the board and leave their legs behind on the pads.
#24
This is amazing stuff. I wish I still had my PAL Turbografx to check for the empty pads.

P.S. I like your wood.

If you don't want that sad empty husk, I'll gladly take it and use it for a creative project...

What type of project is going to be a cleaning kit?
It is adhesive residue.

I too am balding, it started when I was 17. I cut it with number 0 clipper now to look half decent and not like an old chap. I have dark thick eyebrows though, just think Nosferatu.

I've bought 3 items from dora_ts. The first didn't arrive so I had to get a refund through ebay, I thought I would give them the benefit of the doubt and bought another item which I did receive, so I thought the first time was a one off and bought another which I didn't receive. Now you know what the negative feedback is about.
I think they list things for sale that they don't have or have previously sold and then hope that people forget they even bought them.
Importing items into the UK is terrible, the customs duty threshold is £15. No wonder I always get the seller to mark the value down.

Is anyone else sometimes overly conscious of their tongue, particularly when you are trying to sleep?

I completely understood so I derived no confused pleasure from it.
The Fairy Liquid TV adverts have a cockney baby in them now.

Switching mode power supplies can cause visual interference on some old consoles though as they were made to use linear supplies.
I have a switching mode supply for my SFC original model that works fine but displays interference on a 1chip console.
The same power supply causes interference on my Core Grafx.

You can have it if you cover postage. I'm in the UK btw.

I tried it with some needle nosed pliers and it did indeed come off, although a piece of the plastic came off also. Perhaps my pliers weren't needley enough.
The fact that the part that holds the disc just presses onto the motor spindle seems a bit crap to be honest, seeing as it is spinning at speed.

#36
I know this is commonly done. I have a few Discmans that I took lasers from and have the rest spare so I thought I would try the spindle and motor in a CD-ROM² instead of the original magnet version. HOW DO YOU REMOVE THE SPINDLE AND MOTOR FROM A DISCMAN??
There are no holes in the spindle part to insert the screwdriver through to remove the screws. Are they attached by some other method that I am unaware of?
#37
I have had a few original PC Engines with graphical issues, I fixed them by replacing the HSRM20256LM chips. Try searching SRM20256 for the part.
#38
Ignore (or continue to ignore) this topic, there is a tear in the ribbon cable that I didn't notice.
#39
First of all the unit has had a complete capacitor replacement and new gear and regrease.
I have adjusted the pots to match an image I found on here but it hasn't helped.
The laser seems to be working as it travels to the centre and then the lens does the bobbing up and down to attempt to read the disc.
When I put in a disc it lazily spins it a few times and then the unit shuts off.
I tried testing the resistance values between the points marked A, B and C and the readings are out. What should the values be on the potentiometer of the laser itself or does this vary from lase to laser?
#40
Could be a break in the cable connecting the 2 boards. Try bending it a little and see if the image changes.
#41
Also check for continuity across the fuse.
#42
I have replaced the caps on my Supergrafx now and the image is perfect, although the bars weren't as noticable to begin with as they are on other PCE consoles.
The caps to be replaced on the original and Core Grafx are numbered the same. I have tried it before on several Core Grafx consoles, on some it worked perfectly but on others it didn't appear to make any difference. :-k

Here are photos of the two screens I get when powering on the Duo to what should be the BiOS screen.

Yes, you found an example. What a dull monotone voice.

I am a Britisher and I have never heard anyone pronounce SEGA as SEE-GA. It has always been pronounced SÉ-GA to me (it even informs you how to pronounce it at startup in some games). Also Konami is pronounced as it should be KO-NA-ME.
Your information source is unreliable.
#49
I would have assumed that Americans would pronounce the'U' sound soft (like tube pronounced toob), whereas in the UK we would be more inclined to pronounce the 'U' hard (tube=choob).

As the title with no response. I read another recent issue like this (Desh?) and THESteve suggests that the C6270 is bad. I replaced it and got audio and glitched graphics on some Hucards, I thought this might be a RAM issue so I replaced the 2 SRM20256 and the SRM2264 but there is no change.
I thought it might be a problem with the C6260 so I replaced this and thought I may as well do the C6280 as well, but there is still no change.
The CD bios seems to start as the disc activity light comes on and the glitched screen flashes when I press the run button. I cannot check discs though as there isn't currently a laser unit installed.
I have done all the usual like cleaning the board, replacing the caps, checking the voltage regulators, checking traces and vias.
I removed the card slot and checked the traces and vias and continuity appeared fine.
Kato and Ken has perfect audio but in other games the audio is faster than normal and others just give a hum sound and blank screen.

I forgot to mention that I had removed IC520. I reinstalled it and plugged in the laser unit black plug and the motor turns the gear that drives the laser along the sled so most functions seem to be working apart from the visual output.
I even tried a Supergrafx game in it which just gave a solid green screen.
I'm just hoping the oracle might chime in now as he seems to have the knowledge for every eventuality.
