10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

Quote from: benlefou on 07/20/2018, 03:53 AMValid point on Nexzr, I suppose it might just be the "hardcore" who are aware and not so much the casuals.
are there any casuals in this particular hobby? how could there be, at this point? anyone new to the scene is coming in from youtube videos on the "10 rarest games" or whatever, and nexzr is gonna be mentioned in many of those!
I guess other gamers coming across the PCE for the first time might not have heard of it, I mean casual might not be the right word but those who haven't dug into the library of games. A lot of games are mentioned ahead of it but I probably do agree it shouldn't really be brought up in this particular thread, it is undoubtedly talked about a lot but I can kinda see what nopepper was getting at.

Quote from: ParanoiaDragon on 07/22/2018, 12:51 AMPsychic Storm gets a bad rap??  Man, that's one of my favorite games!
It's rather easy and a bit clunky if I remember correctly but a half decent game, definitely not a bad one!

Quote from: benlefou on 07/19/2018, 01:25 AMAmen to Nexzr, it's an absolute gem! But I would argue that it's pretty well known amongst all PCE fans and definitely talked about a lot!

I actually picked up Formation Armed F recently to give it a try, haven't seen any gameplay but just heard it's super difficult. Love the artwork!
I took some liberties since you did not really define your parameters in your OP, but I did mention that Nexzr is well known among PCE aficionados. Other gamers, that perhaps know the Turbo/PCE, and know games like Bonk, Gate of Thunder, Rondo, Gunhed, Splatterhouse, heck, even Sapphire and Sylphia, seem to always ignore one of the best games in the system.

Armed F is difficult because, by default, it has no continues and it's a memorizer in the vein of Image Fight and Dragon Spirit, so imagine trying to learn the game while having to start from the beginning every time you die. I don't have time/patience for that, so I use the continue cheat to memorize the levels, then the game opens up and becomes enjoyable instead of a slog. Also, I find the art kinda ugly, sans the bullets...the bullets are definitely pretty! Just curious; what do you like about the art in this game?

Oh, and another awesome game rarely discussed, The Lost Sunheart. I've also gone on about this one in the past, but I just love this little game. The enemy patterns are so different from any other shooter I've played...the game just has a distinct rhythm and I especially like how those said enemy patterns seem to "dance" in sync with the catchy music.
Valid point on Nexzr, I suppose it might just be the "hardcore" who are aware and not so much the casuals.

I'll heed your advice on Armed F as I can imagine it's frustrating. In regards to the artwork I should have perhaps specified I meant the cover art as I actually haven't played the game yet or really seen screenshots.

I've never heard of The Lost Sunheart so I'll definitely check that one out, thanks!

Quote from: exodus on 07/17/2018, 03:39 PMBlood Gear - RPG overworlds, nice mech design, side-scrolling action stages, nice cutscenes, extremely affordable, and a Hudson original. No idea why it's not up there with the top games people talk about for the PC Engine.
This one always intrigued me. I assumed it was text heavy?
Blood gear is text heavy but only for all the in town parts. All the side scrolling/platforming stages make up for it. Meaning, just walk around and talk to everyone in town until you figure how to move onto the next section. This is the only Japanese pc engine RPG I've ever played through since it has enough action/platforming elements to warrant my waste of time by not knowing how to read Japanese. Not to mention the cut scenes look fantastic. I'd definitely recommend it.
Good to know, I'll definitely check it out as I've always liked the look of it. Similarly Goemon 4 on the Super Famicom has a lot of RPG sections with heavy Japanese text but it's one of my favourite games on the system!

Quote from: nopepper on 07/18/2018, 01:18 PMTotally on topic:

Formation Armed F - I've written about this one before, and I know I'm in the minority, but this is a fantastic shooter with great level design and tough but rewarding gameplay. I use the continue trick to memorize the levels and then 1CC. Feels great once you beat it and the ambiance always keeps me entertained.

Nexzr - this one is well known among PCE and shooter hard core, but unknown and hardly mentioned by others, which is a shame, as it's right up there with the best of the best when it comes to the PCE catalog.
Amen to Nexzr, it's an absolute gem! But I would argue that it's pretty well known amongst all PCE fans and definitely talked about a lot!

Quote from: RyuHayabusa on 07/11/2018, 03:34 PMMystic Formula is under-appreciated I guess. One of the few 2 player games of it's kind on the console. Plus the music is sweet, especially the first stage.
Looks cool, never heard of it before. A quick eBay search brings it up at £65-£100 though unfortunately  :(

Good picks. Briefly played Aldynes and loved it, as for Kaze Kiri it had so much potential, the combat is awesome and the graphics are really nice but it's quite repetitive with no variation. Still a solid 7/10.

no idea why they all start with 'P'
Still need to play Paranoia but agree with the other 2, Psychic Storm gets a bad rap but it's an okay little shooter, a bit too easy though.

As the title says. I don't want to see Gunhed, Rondo, Spriggan, ect... I want some good games that people hardly mention. Here's a few of mine:

Die Hard - Great run n' gun with platforming elements.

Madouou Granzort - Awesome platformer with a nice transformation mechanic and massive stages.

Silent Debuggers - Intense and creepy FPS, doesn't give you an inch of breathing space.

Discuss.

Had a good go on the English translated ROM last night, I think it's a great little game! The graphics and music are great and I liked the design of the later levels, I made it to stage 8 before I had to shut it off so I will try to finish it tonight. Stage 3 is terrible though, it really breaks up the action for a boring, samey looking maze that isn't fun at all! Saying that the rest of the stages are fun! I like the bosses and the platforming elements. I would certainly buy the game, I'll hold off till one comes up on eBay for a decent price.

Quote from: ParanoiaDragon on 08/17/2017, 02:47 AMI haven't played thru it yet. I've been wanting to play it in english, but have had trouble patching it.  In any case, I did listen to the soundtrack repeatedly in my car to & from work a few months ago, & at the very least, I love the soundtrack.
I've just patched the rom and will give it a go on the TED, shoot me a PM if you want me to send you the file.

Thanks for the input guys, in regards to price the last auction finished on about £30 which isn't too bad I suppose. It's just ridiculous that sellers are trying to get £70-£100 for it on BIN auctions. I really want to try it out.

PCE/TG-16|CD/SGX Discussion / Die Hard
08/16/2017, 05:29 AM
What's the general consensus on this game? People give it a lot of stick while others love it. From what I've seen it doesn't really follow the movie and looks like the Movie tie-in was just tacked on to sell the game. Is it really that bad? Or is it a classic case of  these internet reviewers not actually playing the game or giving it a chance? I think it looks pretty good!

What perplexus me though is even though the game is considered garbage it's listed on eBay at £100, and that's from hit-japan who are normally pretty reasonable in pricing (by reasonable I mean "the going rate" which is gone way too far now!)

What do you actual PCE fans think? And how much should I pay for it?

Ah thank you! That's exactly what I was looking for!

It would make sense for it to launch with the first SCD game since the SCD attachment didn't come out till December that year.

I know the first Super CD-ROM game came out October 25th 1991 but I can't seem to find a date on the required System Card, is it safe to assume it came out on the same date?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

The engine missed out on a lot of 'walk right and fight' brawlers! So would definitely love to have seen more than Crest of wolf and Mad Stalker.

Cadillacs and Dinosaurs
The Combatribes

Also R-TYPE 3 would have been killer!

Quote from: elmer on 06/28/2017, 03:43 PMYeah, sorry, I'll wait for the Japanese/European PCE-mini ... there are just too many good games missing from the TG16 library!
Well, now is your chance!  What is in your 20 PCE titles, and which of the many US exclusives would you put as the 21st game?
Well ... ... ... ... I'd change the rules a tiny bit and I wouldn't put any US Exclusives in the mix.

I just can't think of a single one that really added anything worth-a-damn to the PCE's history.

I'd also include the SuperGrafx, since that's an interesting part of the story of the PCE, and provided a couple of classic arcade-ports that beat other 16-bit generation systems.

I'd try to mix iconic titles (even if they aren't the best), with best-on-system titles, and exclusives that you just couldn't play anywhere else, and show the variety on the platform.

And, since I'm also imagining a UK/European release, anything that's got a lot of text should have an English patch available (if possible).

That list looks bang on, I'd maybe try to squeeze SSS and Soldier Blade on though, and maybe Nexzr... Oh and Image Fight.... Actually let's just fill it with shooters!

If your not fussed about it being a PCE only stick, you could pick up a psx converter for the PCE, they work a treat. I have a psx namco stick and adaptors for PCE, Saturn, Megadrive, ect... So you can use it on everything really.

The Hyper Play approach sounds like a good one. I shall take onboard all your advice and start to put together a few aritcles, build up a network and see if I can push this zine out there!
The Table Of Contents page looks great.

We look forward to any further updates.

I would emphasize the "network like crazy" aspect since we are such a small community...and I don't use social media (I'm an outlier), but I've heard that merely hitting a few Facebook groups + YouTube + ___________ will reach a significant chunk of audience :)

Thanks, when I have a bit more content I will try to network and get the ball rolling. Kevin Gifford has kindly aloud me to use some of his articles in the zine too.

I've been thinking about making the first issue a PCE STG zine, then if it pans out do the second one about platformers, ect.. I've done a mock up of a contents page with some ideas on what I want to feature. What do you guys think?

Quote from: benlefou on 11/24/2016, 01:25 PMWould a zine be better than a booK?
A new printed PC Engine fanzine would be absolutely awesome.
Hyper Play the printed RPG fanzine in my signature has done really well, and has a real solid following now.

You could do a printed fanzine that was say 40 pages each issue (common fanzine size)  and then after a while compile all the reviews into a guide book, this is what I always thought I would do if I'd done it.
Awesome, congratulations. How do you fund the zine? Do you pay the initial costs then just recoup via the sales? I remember a 'Shmup' zine a few years back that one guy managed to get printed using a preorder system via PayPal.

The idea of compiling a book from the zines is great! Then at least people know the quality and what content they will be getting.i think this may be the route to take, how did you get your zine out there?
#28
Yes definitely, this will be the way I go on this project.

Would a zine be better than a book? Or maybe focusing a book on a specific genre within the pce library, eg. STG's.
#29
Thanks for the responses, the idea of doing it is just for the love of it and to see a project through, it's always nice to have a hard copy to read and admire, the thought of a zine is also interesting to me. Like I said, I will start the project and see where it goes, there's nothing to lose, if something comes of it and it gets enough backers to print then that would be great, if not the work can be published digitally and some people may get enjoyment from it.
#30
Hello. I just wanted to gain a bit of insight as to what you guys think about the idea of self publishing a physical book all about the PCE. I have seen that the '30 years' book was abandoned and I am aware of the French 'la bilbe' but I feel the urge to just start a pce based project, it may ultimately be doomed to fail but I would love to try. I have a background in graphic design and was thinking of starting work on a book, it would likely feature sections on card games, CD-ROM and super. Maybe some history, a collector's list? I would love some input on what the community would like to see in it. I am very open to collaborating. The idea is to work on the book and then once I have something maybe try to crowd fund the printing of it via kick-starter. Even if the project fails I would release it as a PDF.

What do you guys think? Is it a worthwhile venture? What would you want to feature inside?

Thanks.

As much as I have tried to like this game I just can't. I know a lot of people have nostalgia for it which I don't so maybe that's why. It is a good game but I got frustrated with it, I much prefer the 2nd game, love the asthetics and atmosphere. Maybe I will go back to the original and put more time into it!
#32
Awesome picks so far! Not as many of the obvious choices as I thought!

As I'm still quite new to the system I'm still in the process of playing my small library of games (about 50) but I would definitely include 2 games on my list:

Super Star Soldier: As much as Soldier Blade is such a masterpiece I have a massive soft spot for SSS, it's easily the PCE game I have put most hours into and it got me hooked on shooters! It was my first game for the system and its totally badass, everything is spot on and I come back to it time and time again. I did aquire Soldier Blade a few months ago and also loved it, a very polished and perfect example of the Shooter, one for the ages but SSS just tops it for me!

Image Fight: This is another game I just couldn't stop playing, it's such an engaging experience and just hooked me from the moment I flipped the ON switch on my Supergrafx! I'd heard of its reputation for being tough which initially put me off buying it due to me being a STG noob, but I found it a very fair challenge and really felt like I had kicked ass by the time I finished it! It's sequal is also amazing and actually not as hard as people make out!
#33
Image Fight?
#34
So what is everyone's top 5 PCE games? I know a lot of people's answers will probably be the obvious choices but I would be interested as to why you have chosen them. Please list them in order, number 1 being your top pick.

Thanks for the help but the .pdf is too low resolution and I'm having zero luck finding the art book scans
#37
Hello, I'm currently in the process of modding my psx namco stick for use on the PC Engine and I am wanting to go with sapphire themed artwork.

So basically I need a hi resolution scan of the cover (300 dpi) I'm having a hard time finding any resources so thought I would ask you good people if you could help me out? I don't mind if it is a scan of the bootleg version.

Any help would be really appreciated!

Thanks!

Still have Zipang, awesome game!

Hello, downsizing my PCE collection and have a few games if anyone is interested.

Zipang HuCard - case, manual and Cartridge. All in nice condition. - £20
SOLD

Dynastic Hero CD-ROM - complete with spine, all in excellent condition. Not a mark on the disc. - £20 SOLD

Please let me know if anyone is interested. Thanks
#40
OK thanks for everyone's input. I have now resolved the issue. It was indeed an issue with the generic switch power supply.

After a lot of trouble shooting and testing I realised it had to be the psu, after digging through my box of spare cables I found an old Sega psu which could be used (non switching) and it works like a dream! No noise/interference at all! I can now finally play Nexzr!  :)
#41
It's not dependant on the CD because it's there when playing hucards.

It must be the Power cable for the CD ROM unit. Running the Supergrafx off its own cable is fine, as soon as I plug the CD ROM unit power cable in the noise appears! What are my options here?

Do I need to try and source an original power cable for the CD ROM? It's driving me crazy!
#42
Not sure about the video driver? How do I find that out?

The cable has shielding.

And the power supply is this one:

http://en.retrogamesupply.com/collections/pc-engine/products/power-supply-all-in-one-for-nec-pc-engine-supergrafx-super-cd-rom2
#43
Thanks, I managed to put the Shielding back in, and at first it was fine again. But this morning the interference is back?

It is best seen on black  backgrounds, its like a snowy effect, little dots and lines jumping about the screen. Maybe an issue with the power supply? Running the Supergrafx is fine, but if it's connected to the CD-ROM unit then the interference is  there?
#44
Hello all.

I'm having an issue with my Super Cdrom2 unit. I'm getting some kind of interference on my monitor when the unit is attached to my Supergrafx. Here is a video of the issue:
When I remove the CD-ROM unit the interference goes away. Now I recently had my CD-ROM unit re-capped, the guy who re-capped it removed the RF shielding because it was a bit rusty, do you think this is the cause? And reinstalling the RF shielding will fix it? I believe it has to be soldered on? Is this pretty straight forward to do as I have basically no soldering skills.

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.
#45
Thanks for the replies everyone. Looks like I'll have to get it re-capped, though I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it myself, the console works absolutely fine aside from the clicking on initial boot up so I wouldn't want to ruin it :?
#46
Thanks for the response. I will look into all of the above. I've never been too good at tinkering with circuit boards though, does anyone know of a uk based person who could sort this out for me? Thanks
#47
Hello, I'm new to both the forums and the PCE in general.

I recently picked up a few different pce's quiet cheap as they were untested. Now the super cd rom2 unit powers on but once the run button is pressed the cd drive starts to read the disc but it makes a loud clicking sound, sometimes to reads the disc after a few clicks and plays fine, other times it just keeps clicking over and over.

Does anyone have any ideas please? I have a lot of games on the way I'm itching to play!

Thanks
