EGG is a great RPG, highly recommend it.. at first you are playing this cutesy lil bot, and then BAHM the story gets pretty dark.. reminds me of Trigun a bit
#2
Ruruli Ra Rura is a cool little game, but to second Necromancer, there were plenty of times I got stuck, because of stage design elements..  I never beat it, because, for all of its charm, it does feel unfinished.
#3
That's the thing with the Yakuza series it's hard to play through just the story mode when there are all these side events.. Def play the cult sidequest with Gro Majima if you haven't yet.. shit is hilarious

U4 way to easy in comparison to other Uncharted titles, Uncharted 2 is the best IMHO.. Yakuza 0 is great, prob the best one, I loved 4 as well though.
#5
Phantasy Star IV - amazing RPG, way ahead of its time

Gargoyles - the cartoon adaptation, fun platformer with great character animations
#6
Sega Saturn by a mile, with the 4mb ram cart, the SNK fighters ran very smoothly better than the PSX.. RPG's that come to mind: Panzer Dragoon Saga and Tengai Makyo IV... Great character animations, FMV's, load times etc..

I recently dug out my old Turbo Duo from my mom's garage, but it's missing the AC Adapter, I remember reading somewhere you can use an old genesis adaptor with a radio shack converter or something similar to that.

Where can I get a Turbo Duo AC adaptor replacement or a reliable substitute?

I have a Turbo Grafx CD-Rom 2 with Super System Card 3.0 as my main console, but I would love to get the duo running again as well.

Replaying Mafia 3 on the PS4, one of the best storylines ever, too bad the game itself is a bit repetitive.. 8/10 also playing through Yakuza 0, 0 and 4 IMHO are the best in the series.

Spec Ops is the line is a very underappreciated game, with one of the best stories in a shooter period.. It's voiced by the guy who voices Drake from Uncharted, and is a bit like Apocalypse Now..

Another amazing inexpensive underdog for the PS 3  is Binary Domain, great cyberpunk i.e. ghost in shell esque story, gamepleay has similarities to mass effect.

The best I can do is about $3.50

I'm new to this thread.  but I love the Sega Duo system, so much that I will give you $30 for Lords of Thunder, Magical Chase, and Vasteel.. all need to be complete and sealed.. $10 for all 3 if disc only

Quote from: Serega81 on 03/27/2017, 10:45 PMJust beat Blood Gear
Is Blood Gear perfectly playable even if you don't know English? I've always wanted to try it out as a Wonder Boy fan

Recently, I've played some of my favorites, Bonk 2, Bomberman 93, and Tenchi Wo Kurau. I also managed to beat Atomic Robo Kid in one life!
Blood Gear is in Japanese, but this might help
- a complete video playthrough of blood gear

and a Japanese walkthrough of the game here http://mii5.at.webry.info/200805/article_22.html which you can translate via google translate to English or your language of choice.

If you enjoyed Wonder Boy and love mechs, I highly recommend Blood Gear, it's very reminiscent of Front Mission: Gun Hazard or Cybernator for the Super Nes/Super Famicom if you played those.

Also, since I recently beat it, and you get stuck, feel free to msg me for help.

video in question I believe was Power Blade, but both games came out for the NES around the same time, and were quite similar.  Still can't hold a candle to Vice Project Doom though IMHO

PCE/TG-16|CD/SGX Discussion / Re: Ys IV

Seeing this thread pop back up again I have a question.  I started my Ys journey on the Snes with Ys III before I owned a Duo, since then I have played through Ys1 - Ys4 on the Duo/TG CD.  However I never touched any of the next gen Ys games, the PS2 ones etc..  To those who have, would you reccomend any of them?  How do they measure up against their classic counterparts?

This guy Howard C Neal 'Kolibri', some of the most hilarious video game reviews ever.. He basically just played random japanese games, and commented on them.

Here is one he did for Miracalum on Pc-FX
Note - He disappeared of YT and has't made anything since mid 2000's,

Loved the Giant Robo OVA, the two most memorable OVA's for me were Giant Robo and the original Area 88.  Filler episodes often diminish a series's worth, perfect example was Kenshin, Shishio arc amazing, beg great, episodes between Shishio not too great, episodes after Shishio arc WTF.

PS Esteban if you are an anime fan Giant Robo is a must, if you have time (Nadia - 39 episodes) Naida is a classic that influenced many anime of today, particularly ones in the steampunk genre.

Just beat Blood Ger and Babel.. think I will do a quick playthrough of Ruin, and then start the Cosmic Fantasy Series.. Want to play through them all (1 excluded) I never did beat CF 3, so that would be a first.. I think Il playthrough Fiend Hunter and Dracula X on the non-rpg side

Nadia holds a soft spot in my heart for two reasons

1. Back in 1992-1993 my local library had an anime club, and Nadia was one of the first fan-subbed animes (if not the first) I have ever watched.  I was impressed by the Jules Verne steampunk aesthetics, and of course Nadia herself.

2.  There was game called Nadia for the Sega Genesis, an RPG with tons of quests but no combat, think 90's adventure games.  I remember really enjoying this game and looking referring to the anime to gain clues on the puzzles within (games was in Japanese.  Nadia has since been translated, and from my recollection it's about a 6 hour game, so if you are for looking for a quick retro jaunt I highly recommend it.

http://www.sega-16.com/2011/09/nadia-the-secret-of-blue-water/

With that said - Nadia the anime, does contain a lot of filler episodes and sometimes tend to drag in comparison to other anime series, especially newer ones.

Yes, Sadler is kool.

Plus, cannavis.

Plus, spelling?
If I remember correctly it was Cannabis in the Japanese version, and WD translated it into Cannavis to prevent chronic abuse by children and adults alike ;)

Toshiyuki Kubooka who was the character designer on Lunar worked on both and directed quite a few episodes of Nadia and was heavily involved in early Gainax projects,
No wonder the animation and character designs for Lunar, hold a soft spot in my heart :)

Quote from: Gypsy on 03/17/2017, 10:48 AMwell made adventure games (Snatcher and Policenauts come to mind immediately)
Man, I bought Policenauts for the Sega Saturn when it first came out 1994? and beat it sans faq/guide etc.. that was a trip, and given Kojima's love for convoluted plot lines, I, of course missed half the game's storyline, until I actually got to play it in English.  Thanks to the awesome translation team that took on that project, that must have been a doozy to translate, what do you think NighWolve?

Quote from: ccovell on 03/16/2017, 07:36 PMA little bit less of the adolescent obsession with graphic violence.

...which was fine when I was an adolescent, but beauty, grace, and playfulness are more timeless.

I don't really care for turn-based RPGs, so what's left of classic Japanese games are adventures, action-puzzlers, space shoot-em-ups with no life bars, etc.  :)
Any good Japanese adventures you can think of I.e something a keen to Silent Hill, Shenmue, Yakuza, etc.. but with no us release .. For me most Japanese adventure games would have to be playable on 32 bit systems to get the most out of them, older systems  couldn't handle the graphical output..

Currently, I'm re-playing BABEL a 1992 Telenet RPG for the Cd-Rom2.  Babel is notorious for having humongous towns, in which you have to talk to a specific character/characters to progress.  For someone who only knows basic hiragana/katakana, no kanji whatsoever, this game is a nightmare.  Of course I rely on all things interwebs, Google Translate, and NicoFox, to help me in a spot, but still it can be a hassle.

Way back when, before NicoFox, Google Translate, or even Google itself, I found myself being drawn to Japanese games: the Anime character designs, modding your console to play something different, the first kid on the block to try it appeal, all these things made import games especially attractive.  It didn't help that my favorite game shop carrying said imports, was only a couple of blocks away.  Game Hunter, anyone?

I have played through multitudes of imports (at least 45-50), mostly RPGs on the PCE, PC-FX Sega CD, Saturn, Dreamcast, PSX, PS2, PS3, Nintendo, SNES, NDS.

One of the things that drew me to these games was what I call the 'riddle' factor.  This applies to RPG's more than any other genre.  The riddle in this case, is figuring out what action to take after you accomplish a quest and don't know where to go.  Do you go to this village, and talk to this person, or maybe you have an item to unlock the gate ahead if you don't have said item how do you obtain it?

With moonrunes as your guide (Thank you Necromancer I love that word) you are left to figure out the exact details on your own, and make logical conclusions based on what happened in the game before you got stuck.  You have to solve the riddle to progress further, and with RPG's you level up while solving said riddle so it's a win-win.

This puts me in a dilemma, I know some hiragana/katakana, no kanji, and would love to learn more Japanese, signing up for a class as we speak.  However, wore I fluent in Japanese, the magic that attracted me to these games in the first place would be diminished.  Just another retro-RPG to wade through.

So what draws you into playing imports?

PS - I know NEC had a lackluster performance in the US, so we all played imports to get the most out of the system but is there more to the story?

#34
Having played Lunar 1 for PSX, I remember really enjoying that ol skool RPG feel that they were going for.  The story/animation for some reason reminded me of Nadia: Secret of Blue Water anime, and for me this game was a throwback to the 16 bit RPG era only on a 32 bit system.  With that said I keep hearing that WD cut out a of TXT, and changed some essential plotlines for the remake.  Particularly something having to do with Ghaleon's motives.  For those that played both version, were there major changes in the plot? Enough to warrant a playthrough through the Sega CD version after completing the PSX one.

Lunar Eternal Blue - Never really got a chance to play it on both systems, keep hearing great things about it, and it's high time I play a retro-rpg, that isn't full of moonrunes (J).
#35
I second the retropie, it's $50 and plays all of the old systems up to PSX with few hiccups.  The only two systems it has problems emulates are the Nintendo 64 (few bugs, which with the right settings, and updates are getting fixed.. i.e. most games playable, and Sega Saturn (to my knowledge doesn't play at all). Sega Saturn never had a good emulation, even on PC's.

Quote from: guest on 03/02/2017, 11:38 AMHands down, the cinemas in Ys I and II are the most memorable to me.  Quick on its heels are Cosmic Fantasy (bathing scenes!), Ys IV, Gotzendiener, cute and funny Magicoal, and Final Zone II (so bad they're good + a nice bitch slap).

For technically impressive ones, it's hard to beat those in 3x3 Eyes, Gulliver Boy, and Xanadu.
I have to second Necromancer on Final Zone II, it's one of those its so bad its good moments, kind of like Steven Seagal movies especially the later ones.. I just finished Blood Gear for the 3rd or 4th time, I like some of the cinemas there, especially the intro, and ending sequences.  From what I recall Star Breaker had a few good cinemas as well, I liked some of the villain designs and animations.

One of the things that attracted me to the Turbo Duo, were the glorious cinematics cd/scd games had.  In 1993 I was just starting to get into anime, and the PC engine/duo game screenshots I saw in us magazines like egm and Gamefan really wet my appetite for the system.

The three games that have the most memorable cinematics for me based on 3 factors : relation to plot, color/graphics, nostalgia are:

Exile:WP - Was the first game I played for the duo, was blown away by saddler's design, voices , and how colorful they were.

Babel - Character design reminded me of old school robotech, cinematics had blood and titties. One of the most mature titles.

YS IV - awesome character designs, great dub (thanks NightWolve), and of course it's Ys. I.e. familiar characters plus scenario

Honorable Mention - Neo Metal Fantasy - Battle centaurs, What??!! detailed cinemas, great character designs . Reminded me of FOTN anime, long legs short torso.

What are your top 3 titles with great cinemas ?

All released on the 3do, were pretty good FMV games.

My top 10 are a bit different then most on this list, I never owned a tg16 and got a duo in 94, most of the games I played at first were imports and all CD based.  A lot of this list is biased by nostalgia.

1. Exile Wicked Phenomenon
2. Ys IV
3. Exile
4. Blood Gear
5. Neo Metal Fantasy
6. Babel
7. Cosmic Fantasy IV Part 1 *
8. Download
7. Tengai Makyo Fuun Kabuki Den
8. Ruin: Kami No Isan
9. Fiend Hunter
10. Dracula X

* - I'm one of the few on here, that actually really enjoyed Part 1, finding the game very colorful and entertaining, even if I did get stuck in the village, with no way of progressing. (those who have played it no doubt heard of this bug :(
#41
I actually liked Exile WP's challenge, a Dark Souls of yesteryear, sure it's difficult, but that satisfaction when you finally beat it, priceless :)
#42
Thanks NecroPhilemancer and Digi K.  I play a lot of Japanese games on my duo, so I'm fairly familiar with various sites, and google translate quite a few of them, to make sense of the disjointed mess lol I took two courses in Japanese, but after playing japanese games since 1993, I should probably just learn the language, or at least essential kanji characters.
#43
Thanks for all the great responses, reading through them it seems like the majority got their start with the hucard titles. I have played a few hucards: Splatterhouse, Download, and Bonk's Adventure, come to mind, but for the most part I have always been a CD/SCD connoisseur, with a preference on Japanese RPG's e.g. Cosmic Fantasy IV, Ys IV, Tengai Makyo series, Star Breaker.

Thanks Il PM him.. the thread wasn't on pcenginefx, it was some other forum.. wish I could find it, because if true that adds a lot more weight to the story..

Since I'm on a trip down memory lane with my duo.. I thought I would ask this.. What was the first three games you ever played for your tg16/cdrom2/duo?

I bought my duo in 1994, and didn't play tg16 chip games until much later.. but the first three games I ever played were..

Exile Wicked Phenomenon
YS IV
Babel

What's your first three games ?

Il jump on the bandwagon.. Thanks for the excellent translation NightWolve :) Ys IV was one of the first games I played for my duo, my 14 year old ass was absolutely floored by it in 1995.. half screen character portraits, great cutscenes, I think I got sick from school instantly , and played it for 4 days straight till morning light. Thanks to you I can finally play it in English while simultaneously reliving my teenage years.

I post once in a blue moon, but I lurk often (since 2009), and no matter what system I play PS4, Dreamcast, etc.. sooner or later I come back to the Duo, there was just something magical about that system :)

Back to my point, I am replaying Blood Gear yet again, probably for the 4th-5th time, such a fun underrated classic across all platforms, not just the Duo/PCE.

Three years ago I came across a post on a forum (can't find the post), that detailed the Blood Gear storyline to a non-Japanese speaking pleb like myself.

-SPOILERS AHEAD-

I believe it mentioned a family connection between Aleph and the bad guys, something like the main empire general was Aleph's father and Rakuh is his brother, something along those lines.

-END SPOILER-

Can one of the Japanese speakers familiar with the game, please do a quick summary of the main plot points for the rest of us peasants.

Necromancer, SamIAm, NightWolve?

long time lurker, finally decided to join the discussion...

Replaying Blood Gear for the third time currently, such an amazing game, but I got stuck because I forgot that in order to get the bazooka thingie that blows up the barrier in the water rising fortress, I need to talk to a scientist who will give you the bazooka BUT ADVICE TO THOSE THAT HAVEN'T PLAYED IT YET....  If your inventory is full he won't give you anything :(

Before that replayed the Exile series.  I may be one of the few that actually likes the second one better, and despite the difficulty level, all the bosses have patterns.  Once you learn those it becomes a cinch!!!

Great To Meet You Fine Folks
