@GTV reviews the Cosmic Fantasy 1-2 Switch collection by Edia, provides examples of the poor English editing/localization work. It's much worse for CF1. Rated "D" for disappointment, finding that TurboGrafx CF2 is better & while CF1's the real draw, Edia screwed it up...

My buddy scooped a Duo during the death rattle of TTI, and he chose over the phone which game he wanted. It made me think they just dropped the cart in the box before shipping.

He chose Samurai Ghost. No manual. No sleeve. Just the Huey.

That is fantastic! Way to spread community love too!

I've been playing Ys 1, 2, and 3 off and on lately.

Played Soldier Blade and Blazing Lazers for a while last night.

All amazing. I almost feel like with those five games, with a Bonk, Bomberman,  and Keith Courage thrown in, I could be game happy for a lifetime. I come back to those over and over again.

Quote from: guest on 03/13/2017, 06:05 PMOnce there's a CD replacement like how GD-EMU is for Dreamcast, sign me up.   CD hardware is a pain in the ass.
This so much. I think the better use of the processing power might be to build a hardware add-on that locked onto the back and could load CD Images via an sd card.

I'm still hoping for an all in one that has nice HDMI output solutions like the nt mini, etc. though.

I want a Frameister, but see above with my CRT addiction, etc.

Also, I think Micomsoft might be coming with something strong next.

I had a crazy week after my last response and came back to this awesome thread. Thanks for all the responses guys.

As someone who grew up being 1 of 5 people in my hometown with a Turbo back in 1990-1991 and someone who is relatively new to the forums here: I can really see both sides of the argument. I've had nothing but love and respect  for this forum, and received nothing but love and respect from you guys. Thanks for being who we are, the good and the bad.

I think Kevtris could be upset because he has poured heart, souls, and time into these projects. It's a big deal to work that hard at something while some people here in the forums feel there is something chaste and sacred about the pce. Outsiders shouldn't be allowed to love it, and peoeple without original hardware are mud-bloods.

Honestly, I think the healthy discourse about all this stuff is good for our scene. I do feel like the community has been a lot less active this year, so maybe a little anger and nostalgia is what we need? Ha.

Seriously, thanks to everyone who replied with ideas and info about FPGAs as well. I'm interested in getting one of these NES clones. I too truly prefer the look of CRT with scanelimes. I'll be damned if the warped Trinitron Wega screens aren't killing me though. I have an amazing Toshiba flat screen but it's  only a 10 inch screen. Serious dilemmas.

Everything I've read about the FPGA (Like the Analogue Nt) is that since it is hardware emulation, not software based like Retron 5, it is spot on.

Does anyone know if these FPGA's are not as legit as advertised? I haven't tried one.

I do hate to see that "the community" has pissed off Kevtris, and yes, Joe and Dave did mention him in their show. I know that Game-Tech US also prominently features Kevtris.

PCE/TG-16|CD/SGX Discussion / PCE FPGA
03/05/2017, 10:16 AM
Just watched this week's episode of Gamesack featuring the Analogue Nt Mini. Thanks Joe and Dave. I want a PCE FPGA solution. Anyone heard of or know one?

I searched the forums, and the last real discussion was from 2012. FPGA has progressed rapidly in those 5 years.

Keith Courage as mech.

That robot is damn near unstobable (unless you have to jump and can't see that you are about to land on spike or water).
#9
Air Zonk is a masterpiece!

I played Galaga 90 for about an hour today. My face hurts from smiling the whole time. So classic, and I really get nostalgic for 80s arcades when I play this game.
#10
Awesome game!

Black Tiger is always paying the Turbo love/obey forward! Thanks man.
#11
I agree on the Ys sentiment. I often put in Ys 1, and I have a save on the first field just to grind and listen to the music. This and Blazing Lazers are my 20 quick hits. I can't leave Keith Courage out of this discussion. It doesn't get enough love!

Enter me in this raffle please.

Remember my post last month about Seymour Onion? Never heard back. Opened a claim. Got my money back and bought sleeves elsewhere.

On a positive note, scooped TES Oblivion for $4 shipped on a cheap BIN last week.

I have a hard time deciding who is right in the aforementioned situations. There is a lot of grey area. What I do know is that no one should ever get called a little bitch for whatever feedback gets left. That's the definition of projecting...
#15
No it seriously wasn't a troll post. I'm trying to get in touch with them. I ordered a box of sleeves from them, and I haven't heard a word. I've sent emails, eBay messages, and posted here, but they have not replied. I'm beginning to think they are defunct. I hate spreading bad mojo about what could be an isolated incident, but it's been almost a month.

Anyone have another source for new sleeves?

Dammit. You heard about the Facebook group too? No wonder I can't get in touch with them!

Ha.

Thanks for the responses guys. For some reason, I never thought to email through the website. Hopefully I will hear back from them.

Cheers,

Hey guys. I'm trying to get into contact with Seymour Onion. Are you a member here? I bought some sleeves from him on eBay, and I'm trying to figure something out. The sleeves look awesome btw, and I was led there by a forum post here.

Thanks all!

PCE/TG-16|CD/SGX Discussion / Re: Ys IV
08/28/2016, 09:22 PM
I said before, but I probably will again: Thanks Nightwolve! I had an Ys Marsthon this year as well. IV is so fantastic!

My bud came to visit from Japan bearing gifts of Parodius, Kunio Kun Soccer, and SF2 Dash. All really fantastic. Thanks bud.

Huge retail presence here in Charlotte, NC. I grew up about 50 miles north and our dept. stores even had Turbo. I feel like the Toys R Us had a serious selection even into the Duo days. Side note: I bought a copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga there when it came out. Such a fun game.

Anyway, back to Turbo, strangely enough, I never saw Turbo games at the stores in Winston-Salem or Greensboro, only Charlotte.

I knew 2 other people that had a Turbo, and 1 with a Duo.

Only 1 of my friends had a Master System, and the token rich guy in town who had a Master System and a Neo. That guy didn't have a Turbo though. Go figure. This token rich dude was actually a really nice guy, not the typical "Troy from Goonies" type.
#22
I finished Ys IV recently as well. Nightwolve's work is fantastic! Thanks a lot NW.

If you haven't enjoyed it, then you owe it to yourself.

On another note, I also finished the PC remake (or PSP Port?) or Ys 1 & 2. What's up with the way the screen is so zoomed in? I know the engine can handle zooming it to what feels correct (to me) because it zooms out of every boss fight. Prefer the Turbo CD edition every time.  Really cool you are watching your son go through the Turbo classics.
#23
That is such a find! I love handhelds, and I'm hoping to find an Express one day. Playing Nitro-Grafx on my DS just isn't cutting it anymore. The sound emulation is WAY off at best.

I hope you enjoy many hours of portable Turbo.
#24
Hey OC

Welcome. Instead of worrying so much about all the mods, etc. Grab a 12-14 late model CRT at Goodwill or thrift store. I scooped one last year, and it was a whopping $4. It's a flat tub Toshiba, and it's possibly, the best picture quality I've ever seen. I've not ever seen a pvm in person, so go figure. My main Retro monitor is a Sony Trinitron 27 inch BC I like the bigger screen, but the little Toshiba blows it out of the water. You can get a Duo and a little CRT for less than $300. Good luck.

Also, if you are trying to go the emulation route, get a Wii from GameStop for 29.99 and put Mednafen on it. The machine outputs in 240P component and supports cd games (via iso).

Late to the party:

When I was a kid I LOVED...both...

But ultimately found Sega CD more accessible. No store in my suburban/rural town carried TG16. I had to drive at least an hour to get anything (which is why I only had a few games for my Turbo). If I could convince my parents into buying a game for me, it would be tough to also get them to drive an hour to scoop a TG16 game, so I more often played Sega CD. Also the Blockbuster Video carried Genesis and SNES but no Turbo.

Now, in hindsight, and multifaceted adult opinion, I vote Turbo CD. I won't knock anything on Sega CD except that Sega should have added video out through the cd, so the Genesis could compete in the "colors on screen" market place. There are many games I love on both systems, but in overall playability, I choose Turbo. The Ys series builds a really solid foundation for me here. Snatcher on Sega CD.

Make no mistake. It's really very close for me, but I think, if we are including all PCE CD titles it's a no brainer. My copies of Kamen Rider Zo, Lunar, and Night Trap are pulling their nostalgia spades though!

Great thread. I've really enjoyed reeading what everyone thought as this is a question I often ponder.

Hey Spark.

I'm not averse to it. Love the Keith box!

Pissed off because I lost my saved games.
Pissed off because I am getting my ass handed to me by the mantis boss on floor 8 of the tower.
But, other than being pissed off, I am having a blast!
At least Ys 1 is pretty short, so you can get back to where you need to be.

Go grind Adol until the monsters are only giving 1-2 points. This is a Ys tactic I always employ. The bosses are much easier, sometimes with just 1 level gained.

Enjoy! I love all the Ys series.
#29
Blazing Lazers is one of my most cherished Turbo games. If you don't have it, I would definitely look there first.  It's been going from absurdly low to absurdly high lately. It doesn't make any sense.

If you want a solid import eBay store, search seller hit-Japan

I ordered some games from them last week, and they are already here. Amazing speed. I've gotten stuff slower from states near me in NC.
#30
I'm putting that theory in my back pocket...I might need to use it one of these days...
#32
5 is so short!

2nd 5 would be:

Rondo
Air Zonk
Gates
Bonk 2
Bomberman

Keithe Courage says he almost always has a briefcase setup for sale. He often advertises Duos of different conditions. Everyone says his work is amazing, so check him out of you get the cash.

I have a Duo RX 6 button, so can't speak for the Ave. pads. I love the original 2 button though.
#34
Ys. Everything about the series is absolutely fantastic. Music I listen to on the way to work. Action that mixes the best of what makes Zelda and Diablo so addictive today, but we got it all yesterday!
1. Keith Courage. Love this game so much. Nostalgia Goggles for certain.
2. Street Fighter 2. Wowed that it was on PC Engine back in the day. One of my all time favorite games on any console/arcade/PC/etc.
3. Gunhed. Really feels like I'm playing an arcade game at home when I turn this one on.
4. Soldier Blade. That Music!
#35
I scooped Ys 1-4 and Gen Pei Tomaden 2 for a pretty decent price on thebay.

Exodus, you trying to unload that Macross 2038?
#36
Everyone's favorite eBay seller TZD almost always has PCE controllers for $40 shipped. PCE is the way to go. Lots of colors to choose from. 2 button. 3 button. 6 button. Take your pick.

You can get MUCH cheaper but hey, at least he's in US (assuming you're in US), so your controller won't get stuck at a port for a month (never happened to me, but others have said its happened to them. I buy from Japan a decent amount).

Quote from: gynt on 05/26/2016, 03:59 PMwho would fake probably the most common turbo game in exisistence?  people think KC is way too common, but at least it intentionally sold 1:1 with console.
didnt working designs print like 3x as many copies of CF2 as there were CD systems sold?
This so much. Right before WD was closing shop. My buddy and I were trying to buy copies of any old stock they had left. He ordered CF2 and I ordered Lunar 2. They sent him 2 copies of CF2 and told him to give one to a friend. I only got 1 copy of Lunar 2 haha. Wish I had ordered Parasol Stars or Cadash as well, but I was consumed with Lunar back then, and I really only had enough cash for one game. He gave me the other copy.

I still have both games. I never got to play CF2 until last year because I never had a cd drive for my Turbo. Bought my Duo and was quickly a little disappointed with CF2. The battle system grates me a little, but I had a good time finishing a game I had sitting new in the box for almost 15 years! It's also the only box I kept around too. I bought almost all my HuCards used back in the day. My parents were displeased that I had purchased "yet another" gaming system, so I didn't get handed many new Turbo games.
#38
I do really love the arranged Final Fight music on Sega CD, and I'm pleased with how it looks on that system. I don't think the Turbo would have added much more to FF than the SNES. My vote is definitely for a serious "Arcade Perfect" 4 player TMNT. The 9 year old me is just going crazy thinking about it.

Would the USA really have rallied around the Duo if Konami made these ports? I don't know. I feel like the damage that had been dealt early in the 16-Bit war would prove too costly. The multi-platform games that support a console after you purchase it for a system seller like Rondo, Contra, or TMNT don't exist on Turbo. It's how today's Wii-U has to deal. None of the bros buy it for a game like Smash and stick around BC Madden and COD are there too. It becomes niche, and I think Turbo would have unfortunately stayed that way, even though I wanted so badly for people to love it when I was a kid.
#39
Awesome find! I have only ever seen one of these ever. One of my friends had one when they were released, and I just could not believe real console games were portable. Enjoy it! I bet there are many nights where sleep will be hard to find for you this upcoming summer!
#40
Yes! This so much Zeta!

Back to my Ys discussion earlier, I totally agree that the Duo pack in is at least less appealing because the lack of tray art. It still felt that $40-50 is a good value for either version of the game. I've never been able to find one or win an auction I was willing to pay. Awesome game! One of my all time favs, but I've only been able to play it emulated since I never had a CD drive when I was a kid. My bud had a Duo so I got the dreaded watch on Ys.

Speaking of watching your friends play games  That was always the worst when I was a kid, now it's such a hit on YouTube. Surreal.
#41
Mine came in today! It's fantastic! Thanks Rove!

I'm really loving Ys IV: Dawn of Ys. Fantastic in every way.

Thanks Nightwolve for that translation. It's superb!

I just entered Darm Tower. I really like how this game has bits from the prior entires sprinkled in for fun!
#43
I thought I had an awesome deal on Ys Books 1 & 2, Duo edition yesterday, I was winning around $40, but it jumped to $76 at the last second. Sniped. I lost.

$76 is still a decent price as far as eBay goes for this disc, but I thought I was getting away with it...

Pop,

I'm playing Y's IV right now as well. I love it. Have not played the SNES bersion but was thinking about it. By all accounts it is not so good. Thoughts?

As for Y's Book I, I loved it. Darm Tower wasn't so bad. A little confusing, but I enjoyed it. I sort of enjoy level grinding, so I might not be the best source of opinion there...

Cheers.
#45
I too love this music. It's often a game I throw on when people ask: "What is this Turbo and why do you love it so much?"
#46
Welcome! Welcome! All are welcome...

Love the Turbo CD setup. Always wanted it as a kid. I run a Japanese Duo for cd games and Japanese Hueys. Still have my old TG-16 for US games.
#47
Depends on what type of gamer your friend is.
Shooter: Soldier Blade (so many here, but I think this one has the wow factor)
Platformer: Bonk's Revenge, Samurai Ghost, Ninja Spirit, Legendary Axe 1 or 2, Splattterhouse,
Puzzle: no substitute for Klax ;)

I'm assuming all Hueys here.
#48
Ha! I bought my Mario 3 at Roses. Roses makes K-Mart look like a Christie's auction. I didn't care at all what anyone thought about where I shopped as long as I could play that new hotness!
#49
Hmmmm...

Part of me wants this to be real so bad. The other part says: just buy a TE.

If it is real, it's a fantastic way for more people to get into the turbo/PCE, without driving up prices on eBay hardware.

All that said, I don't think it's real. Not enough people want straight up turbo gear to make a factory run type investment. Just the prototyping would cost more than they could reap.
#50
Welcome Khyron!

You must be a Robotech fan. Robotech was my fav when I was a kid.

Have fun with all the turbo madness! I was in your spot (rekindled Turbo love) a year or so ago, but I still had my Turbo and my Neo CD.

Neo CD is also a cheaper alternative to AVS, but there are still some pricey discs. Warning: Load Times. Some games are awful, others are barely noticeable. Samurai Showdown 2 CD arranged soundtrack is worth the purchase.
